.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will progress into our area overnight bringing a
period of precipitation to portions of the region. The low will
move across the waters off the Delmarva Peninsula by later this
morning. High pressure is then expected to build down from the
northwest for the middle and late parts of the week providing
breezy and dry conditions. Low pressure is anticipated to move
across the southern and eastern Great Lakes on Friday and Friday
night. A secondary low is expected to develop somewhere off the
coast. The secondary low is forecast to intensify as it moves
northeastward and farther out to sea over the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Low pressure continues to cross the Appalachians sliding just
south of our area early this morning. Latest radar imagery
showing the frontogenetic band of precipitation continuing to
push into the area. Mesoanalysis is showing a band of 700mb
frontogenesis where the heaviest precip rates are developing,
extending from northwest and north central PA down towards the
Wilkes-Barre area across the Pocono Plateau and toward
northern/central New Jersey. Hi res guidance has initialized
quite well and forecasted this corridor of heavier precip to
develop in this location. The forecast remains largely on track
as of 1 AM, although it's beginning to look like some areas
toward the urban corridor and other areas along the southern
fringe of the system may not experience quite as much precip as
previously forecast. Will continue to monitor the trends and
make adjustments as needed. Winter Weather Advisory remains in
effect through 7 AM as previously issued.
Previous discussion...While the surface low will not be very
strong, and will not have a tap to Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic
moisture, it will be rather dynamic with it's fast- moving
nature, with a narrow band of rather strong mid- level
frontogenetic forcing as the mid- level low center tracks east-
southeastward along a tight baroclinic zone tonight. Models,
including hi-res guidance, have struggled to pin down the
placement and strength of this forcing and the resulting
precipitation, but they have been coming into much better
agreement today.
With that, we have expanded Winter Weather Advisories southeastward
from Carbon and Monroe (PA) to Northampton, Warren and Hunterdon
Counties. The latter three are in line for 2 to 4 inches of snow,
with 3 to 5 inches around the Pocono Plateau. With a fairly
mild and dry boundary layer temperatures this evening,
precipitation may start off as rain or sleet/graupel for a time
before dynamic cooling results in wet bulbing and helps
transition precip over to snow. Model soundings otherwise
suggest that ice will otherwise not be an issue, with primarily
rain or snow being the dominant precipitation types. The
precipitation will start as early as 7 or 8 PM around the
Poconos and may reach Allentown shortly thereafter. Farther
south, especially down toward Philadelphia, warmer temperatures
and less dynamic forcing aloft will narrow the window for any
accumulating snow to just 2 or 3 hours late tonight, mainly
around 2 AM to 4 AM. As the main mid-level trough passes by,
there is a narrow window for some accumulating snow as far south
as Philadelphia, but due to milder temperatures, accumulations
should be mainly limited to non- paved surfaces. All that said,
this is a tricky forecast, and given the nature of this system,
there will likely be some surprises. Some local spots greater
than 6" of snowfall are very possible in the advisory area,
particularly around Carbon and Monroe Counties. Considered
adding Lehigh County to the advisory, as northwest portions may
see around 3". 2" will be possible all the way eastward toward
Monmouth County.
Thankfully, snow will quickly move off the coast with probably
only some leftover flurries after 5 AM or so, which should limit
impacts to the morning commute on Tuesday.
As the surface low departs and strengthens on Tuesday morning,
strengthening high pressure across the Great Lakes will result
in a pretty stout northwesterly pressure gradient across our
region. Northwest winds will noticeably increase to around
15-25 mph with gusts of 30-35 mph expected. Across the higher
terrain and ridge lines in eastern Pennsylvania and northwest
New Jersey, winds may gust over 40 mph at times by Tuesday
afternoon and evening. High temperatures will be cooler, mainly
in the 40s on Tuesday, which will make a noticeable difference
from Monday in how chilly it will feel, when combined with the
wind. Otherwise expect a dry day with clearing skies.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Dry and more tranquil weather will settle in for Tuesday Night into
Wednesday. Winds are anticipated to stay elevated overnight though
as a tight pressure gradient sets up with strong high pressure over
central Canada and low pressure off the Canadian Maritimes.
Northwesterly winds Tuesday night are expected to be close to Wind
Advisory criteria in the southern Poconos and elevated ridge lines
in the Lehigh Valley, but should go slightly below, with gusts
around 40-45 MPH anticipated. Elsewhere, gusts will be around 25-35
MPH. Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 20s for Poconos, NW
NJ, and the Lehigh Valley, with upper 20s/low 30s expected for
Delmarva, South Jersey, and the urban corridor.
The gradient will relax a bit on Wednesday, though still looking at
a breezy day overall. Gusts to 40 MPH are possible in the Poconos
with northwesterly winds. Lesser winds are expected elsewhere with
gusts up to 30 MPH anticipated. High pressure will begin to nudge in
from Canada with a mid-level ridge building just to our west.
Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 40s for most of the region
with mid to upper 30s expected in the Poconos/NW NJ. Gusts diminish
after sunset. Skies will be mostly clear overnight Wednesday night
with temperatures in the upper 20s/low 30s. The quiet weather will
continue into Thursday with temperatures getting into the mid to
upper 40s, with some spots topping 50.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Long-term period looks to be defined as a more active and unsettled
timeframe compared to the middle and end of this week. Confidence is
increasing in a system impacting the area this weekend with another
potential disturbance moving through early next week. Some wintry
precipitation is possible with at least the first system, though
with the lack of a deep cold airmass, not expecting big totals at
this time.
Getting into the day by day forecast, Thursday night into Friday
looks quiet overall as a mid and upper level ridge axis will move
through our area. Surface high pressure nudging in from Canada will
be in control and temperatures should generally be right around
seasonal norms for Thursday night into Friday.
A trough ejecting out of the Central Rockies will move through the
Great Plains and is expected to become a cutoff H5 low over the
central US. This closed low will move east towards our region, with
the newest guidance having it nearly overhead on Saturday afternoon.
At the surface, an area of low pressure will move through the Upper-
Midwest into the Great Lakes, where it is expected to weaken. A
secondary low looks to develop nearby our area, however global
guidance over the past few runs have trended the secondary low
development further and further east. Ensembles are a bit more west
overall, supporting a secondary low development location more
favorable for snowfall. However, based on a pattern recognition
standpoint, and the lack of a cold airmass overall, the ingredients
just don't match up quite right for a significant snow, at least
currently. Current NBM probabilities of > 2 inches of snow outside
of the Southern Poconos are less than 20%. Thinking it will be
mainly a rain event, though some periods of snow are certainly
possible especially during the overnight hours. Confidence is low at
this time however with it being 4+ days out.
Another system looks to move in towards the end of the weekend and
into next week. Stuck close to NBM for PoPs given it being days 6-7,
but we will have to see how this evolves over the next few days.
Beyond Friday, temperatures look to be around or slightly below
seasonal averages, with mid to upper 40s during the day for most and
temperatures right around/just below freezing at night.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Tonight...Sub VFR conditions expected at times, mainly through
10Z. Ceilings will continue to lower as precipitation spreads
into the region. Precipitation will be mainly snow at ABE and
mainly rain at ILG/MIV/ACY. A mix of rain and snow is expected
for RDG/TTN/PNE/PHL, transitioning to a period of just wet snow
for a couple of hours from PHL north around 08Z. Freezing rain
and sleet are unlikely. Visibilities will drop to MVFR where
snow occurs, and some IFR vsby restrictions are possible,
especially at ABE/RDG/TTN. Sites farther south could see brief
cig restrictions to IFR overnight. Wind northeast around 5-10
kts. Moderate confidence overall, but lower confidence in the
exact timing of the ceiling and visibility restrictions.
Tuesday...Some MVFR or low VFR conditions may linger until 12Z
or so, otherwise skies clearing with any precipitation shifting
quickly offshore. Winds will be the main issue, increasing from
the northwest mid to late morning and continuing through the
afternoon around 15 to 25 KT with gusts 30 to 35 kt. High
confidence.
Outlook...
Tuesday Night...VFR. Northwesterly winds around 15-20 kts with gusts
20-30 kts. High confidence.
Wednesday through Wednesday Night...VFR. Northwest winds around 15-
20 kts with gusts around 25 kts. Winds diminishing at night but
remaining northwesterly. High confidence.
Thursday through Thursday Night...VFR. North/Northwest winds around
10 kts gusting up to 20 kts during the day. High confidence.
Friday through Friday Night...VFR. Light and variable winds in the
morning, becoming south/southeasterly in the afternoon around 5-10
kts. Moderate confidence.
Saturday through Saturday Night...sub-VFR conditions possible.
Mainly rain though some snow may be mixed in at some terminals at
night. Southeasterly wind around 10-15 kts will shift to a more
northwesterly direction, remaining around 10-15 kts. Low
confidence.

.MARINE...
Mainly benign wind and sea conditions are expected through this
evening. Later tonight as low pressure approaches and passes to
our south, northeast winds will pick up across the waters,
reaching SCA criteria with 25 kt gusts in the ocean waters from
around Atlantic City southward by morning. Winds then swing
around to the northwest for Tuesday, and gradually expand an
increase with gale force gusts by the end of the day. While the
gale gusts may be somewhat localized, opted to go ahead and
issue a Gale Warning for all zones starting at 22Z. Seas will
subsequently build toward 5 feet over the ocean with the
increasing winds on Tuesday.
Outlook...
Tuesday Night...Gale Warning in effect until 06z for all coastal
zones. The Gale Warning will go until 12z for the Delaware Bay zones
and coastal zones south of Great Egg Inlet as a northwesterly wind
direction will favor funneling down the Delaware Bay. Northwest
winds around 20-30 kts and gusts around 35 kts. Seas 5 to 7 feet.
Wednesday through Wednesday Night...SCA conditions likely. Northwest
winds around 15-20 kts, with gusts around 25-30 kts. Seas 4 to 6
feet.
