At 644 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located over Birdsboro, or 7 miles southeast of Reading, moving
east at 20 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado.

SOURCE...Weather spotters reported a funnel cloud. At 6:38 PM, a 
         rotating wall cloud was reported near Amity Township.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without 
         shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage 
         to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur.  Tree damage is 
         likely.

Locations impacted include...
Pottstown, Birdsboro, Bechtelsville, Gilbertsville, Cedarville,
Stowe, Boyertown, St. Lawrence, Pottsgrove, Lorane, South Pottstown,
Amity Gardens, Sanatoga, Kenilworth, Halfway House and Reiffton.

.SYNOPSIS...
Showers and storms are forecast for this evening and into tonight. A
cold front approaches Monday and looks to pass through the region
Monday night into Tuesday. Thereafter, the front stalls and
dissipates into the middle of the week. Another cold front will
approach the area on Friday and into the weekend, bringing increased
chances for showers and storms again.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
The water vapor imagery this afternoon shows an upper-level
trough from near Hudson Bay Canada southwestward across the
Great Lakes and into the Tennessee Valley. A pronounced mid
level low is centered over central Illinois toward central
Indiana. Our area resides south of a warm front with south to
southwest flow maintaining plenty of moisture, with surface dew
points into the lower 70s for much of the region. The very warm
boundary layer combined with humid conditions is resulting in
ample instability.

Heading into this evening, an uptick in convection a bit earlier
than expected prompted the issuance of a Severe Thunderstorm
Watch for all of our area (except Sussex County NJ) that is in
effect until 11 PM. Some discrete scattered storms over
southeastern NJ near the sea breeze boundary prompted some
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, but thus far have not received
significant reports. These storms may be struggling a bit to
take advantage of the very moist, unstable environment, as they
outrun better forcing to the west and northwest, while running
into somewhat more stable air along the shore and coastal
waters.

Meanwhile, another area of deeper convection has been focusing
across east-central PA. Latest hi-res CAM models along with
radar trends suggest those storms will continue to focus on
areas from Berks County to the Lehigh Valley and Poconos on
northward through 8 or 9 PM. Meanwhile, another area to watch
may be south of Philadelphia, particularly across the northern
Delmarva Peninsula toward Cape May around the 8-10 PM timeframe,
as another area of storms around the DC/Baltimore area moves
east-northeastward this evening. These two areas will probably
have the best potential for severe weather, though we'll have to
watch isolated cells elsewhere.

Mesoanalysis suggests 2000-3500 J/kg of surface-based
instability (SBCAPE) across the area, with the highest values
across southern portions into the Delmarva. The mid level lapse
rates however are on the poor side, although the low- level
lapse rates are to steep due to the ample heating of the
boundary layer. The latter is resulting in increasing downdraft
instability (DCAPE), with this greatest across Delmarva and
southern New Jersey. The water vapor imagery and visible
satellite data shows some weak impulses traversing the flow. One
entering western Virginia along a lee side trough, and one is
in western Pennsylvania. Most of these impulses are likely
remnants of previous days convection. The forecast challenge
continues to be how widespread thunderstorms will be. The shear
is on the order of near 30 knots, which is not strong but
enough to organize some convection into clusters or short line
segments. Enough shear with the strong instability may also
support some stronger discrete cells, but the coverage may be
greater farther to the north and west closer to stronger
forcing.

Given the ample instability in place combined with increased DCAPE,
the more robust convective cores will be capable of producing
locally damaging winds especially with water-loaded downdrafts and
associated outflow. In addition, any stronger more discrete
cells could produce some hail. Given high precipitable water
values (around 2 inches) in place along with high freezing
levels, convection will be very efficient rainfall producers.
Storm motions should limit the training of convection and
therefore the flash flood threat looks limited.

Convection will gradually decrease tonight, although given some
additional shortwaves within the flow along with lingering
instability, cannot rule out a few showers or a thunderstorm
lingering into the overnight hours. After convection fades and cloud
breaks occur, patchy fog will be possible. It will be warm and muggy
tonight with temperatures falling back to the upper 60s to low 70s.

As we go through Monday, a very warm to hot day is expected with
highs in the mid 80s to low 90s. Dew points are expected to be
mainly in the low 70s, and this will result in heat indices peaking
in the mid to upper 90s for especially the Interstate 95 corridor
southward (even some low 100s across parts of Delmarva. These values
are currently forecast to be below Heat Advisory criteria.

A mostly positive-tilt upper-level trough is forecast to arrive
later Monday afternoon. This will be accompanied by a belt of
stronger mid level flow and forcing. Sufficient instability and some
stronger shear will result in some additional showers and
thunderstorms especially in the afternoon and evening. Development
may occur primarily along a lee side trough near the Blue Ridge
mountains then propagate eastward. The forecast environment will
support some strong to severe thunderstorms by late afternoon. Given
stronger flow aloft combined with steep low-level lapse rates,
stronger convection will have the potential to produce locally
strong to damaging winds and hail (and downpours). The area with the
higher severe thunderstorm risk looks to be across mostly the
coastal plain into far southeastern Pennsylvania, given better
convective development across western Maryland which then heads
eastward. The convection will wane in both coverage and intensity
into the overnight hours.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The short term period will look to begin Tuesday with a cold front
stalling over the region as a mid level trough above it continues to
weaken and press to the east a bit. With time, the cold front will
continue to stall and should begin to dissipate or become ill-
defined, as will the aloft trough. Very weak high pressure then
moves closer to the region and looks to be centered just to our west
for the Wednesday time frame. Unfortunately, with this pattern and
evolution described, the short term will still look to remain
unsettled.

For Tuesday, guidance indicates the dissipating and ill-defined
aloft trough will still be able to support some propagating
shortwave energy. This combined with daytime surface heating and
instability should lead to the chance of some
showers/thunderstorms initiating. SPC currently has a marginal
risk for severe weather for Southern NJ and much of Delmarva.
The environment is certainly forecast to be favorable for
thunderstorms as indicated by model soundings today. Model
soundings of CAMS and global deterministic guidance mainly
indicate decent CAPE profiles with only marginally favorable
shear. Severe wise, some hail and wind being possible for
Tuesday is the current thinking. WPC does not have any excessive
rainfall outlooked for the area but am still noting PW values
between 1.5-2.0 inches with tall CAPE profiles...some localized
heavy downpours cannot be ruled out at this time. High
temperatures of the upper 80s and low 90s can be expected across
Delmarva while we see the upper 80s southeast of and along the
I-95 corridor and mid 80s to the northwest of it. The forecast
will carry PoPs increasing temporally towards Tuesday afternoon
and evening.

For Tuesday night, mainly no chance of PoPs are included in the
forecast today, though a shower persisting from the evening is
not out of the question. Overnight lows will look to range from
the mid 60s to low 70s with dew points just a little lower
towards the later half of the period.

For Wednesday, surface high pressure will be centered just west of
the region though will remain very weak. This weak surface high may
keep the area dry in the morning but will most likely not be strong
enough to stop the combination of daytime heating and instability
from developing for the afternoon into evening time frame. As a
result, a slight chance of showers/thunderstorms to initiate cannot
be ruled out. Will carry slight chance PoPs for most of the area for
the afternoon to evening timeframe. High temperatures look to be a
bit warmer for Wednesday than the day previous; mainly the upper 80s
to low 90s can be expected across the region.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Very weak high pressure may linger around to start the period
Wednesday night into Thursday but will continue to erode and fleet
away with time. A cold front will begin to approach the region
Friday and may be on our doorstep by the Friday night to Saturday
time frame. The cold front may finish crossing our region Saturday,
but confidence in the timing of the frontal movement remains rather
low at this time.

With high pressure being very weak, we may again see daytime heating
and instability (i.e., thermal pressure creation) lead to the chance
of some shower/thunderstorm initiating Thursday afternoon and
evening. With the cold front approaching Friday, the forecast will
look to be rather stormy for the Friday afternoon to weekend time
frame; mainly will carry chance PoPs for now. Will continue to
monitor the forecast evolution and this cold front; as it is now
July, this cold front could bring some severe weather potential with
it especially if it impacts the region with a favorable daytime
heating time frame in mind. Temperatures will look to be above
average during the duration of the long term.

.AVIATION /22Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This Evening through 03Z...Isolated thunderstorms have been
firing near southern NJ, but are moving off the coast.
Meanwhile, showers and storms will focus on the ABE to RDG
corridor the through 00-01Z. Farther southeast, the main period
of concern for thunderstorms will be around 00Z-03Z. Storms
will be fairly scattered, though may form into lines, but will
not last that entire time; maybe in the vicinity for a couple of
hours. Winds with any of these storms may be strong, generally
out of the west but may be erratic in/near TSRA. Brief IFR or
even LIFR VSBY reductions are possible with heavy downpours.
Conditions are just VFR outside of thunderstorms, with SW winds
4-8 kt.

Later Tonight after 03Z...After SHRA/TSRA shifts quickly east
offshore and weakens, some local MVFR conditions may be possible
mainly TTN northward, but otherwise generally VFR ceilings are
expected the rest of the night. However, some patchy mist or
light fog may form overnight in some spots with VSBY reductions
resulting.

Monday...Would not rule out some MVFR ceilings from TTN to RDG
northward in the morning, along with some patchy MVFR BR or
light fog until 13Z or so. Some models are suggesting that a few
showers or even a stray thunderstorm could pass by early in the
morning. Otherwise VFR condition should prevail much of the day.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible once again
in the afternoon, especially near and south of PHL, with
periodic VSBY/CIG restrictions in/near any storms. SW to WSW
winds 5-10 kt. Moderated confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Some sites may see periods of sub-VFR in the
afternoon/evening due to SHRA/VCTS. Winds W/WNW at 5 to 10 kts.
Moderate confidence.

Tuesday Night...Mainly VFR. NW/NNW winds near 5 kts. Moderate

Wednesday...Mainly VFR. Slight chance of VCTS/SHRA in the afternoon.

increase for a time, however gusts are expected to be 20 knots

thunderstorms late this afternoon and this evening, and again
later Monday afternoon could produce locally strong winds.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The evening astronomical high tides along our coast will be
particularly high over the coming few days due to the full moon.
Fortunately, the wind flow along the coasts of Delaware and New
Jersey is forecast to remain from a southerly direction. Ekman
transport will likely prevent any additional water from building
along our shoreline. That said, tidal anomolies have still been
running around 0.5 to 0.8 ft above the astronomical tides, so spotty
minor flooding will still be likely with this evening's high tide,
especially along the New Jersey shore and along the Delaware river.
Would not rule out a spot or two just touching minor flood criteria,
so we will continue to monitor tide levels, but at this point
conditions look too marginal/localized to prompt a Coastal Flood
Advisory.
