.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure overhead will shift eastward tonight and early
Sunday. Low pressure across Florida will strengthen as it moves
northward and up the East Coast Sunday and Monday. A weak cold front
moves through Tuesday followed by high pressure Wednesday. Another
cold front may then settle across our area Wednesday night or
Thursday followed by high pressure into Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
Tonight will be the calm before the storm, for sure. Strong high
above 1035 mb remains centered over southern Quebec this afternoon,
with a modest wedge extending southwestward along the east side of
the Appalachians. That said, its certainly not a cold air mass, and
increasingly thanks to easterly winds, not a dry one either.
Dewpoints have risen 5-10 degrees from this time yesterday and will
continue to slowly climb tonight as the easterly flow continues
while low pressure well to our south starts heading northward. The
bulk of the system will still be south of us by dawn Sunday, so
without the easterly flow, we'd still have dry tranquil weather.
That won't quite be the case however since the moist flow off the
ocean will result in widespread low clouds, mist and drizzle by late
tonight. Not a washout, but not likely to be exactly dry either.
That said, not expecting any measurable precip before dawn, so the
late night weather will be more of a nuisance than anything else. We
may try to radiate early this evening, but the easterly flow and
developing low clouds likely stop most of us from falling below 40,
with temps starting to rise late tonight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Summary...Few changes with this cycle as the forecast remains on
track. A powerful storm moves through our region Sunday night and
Monday morning. This will bring a round of heavy rain, strong winds,
marine hazards and some coastal flooding. While the heaviest rain
may be ending from south to north during the Monday morning commute,
at least some impacts should be expected.

While there remains some uncertainty with the exact track of the
surface low, a period of strong winds is likely with this the
greatest for the coastal and marine areas. The deepening low
pressure system arrives from the south later Sunday night then
shifts to our north during Monday.

As the potent upper-level trough arrives, ample deep-layer forcing
for ascent coupled with robust low-level warm air advection occurs.
An intense low-level jet on the order of 50-75 knots (at 925 mb) is
forecast to lift northward in tandem with the surface low. This
impressive wind field will drive robust low-level warm air and
moisture advections. It is within this zone where the heaviest rain
will fall, as precipitable water values rapidly increase to near 1.5
inches across the region. The high precipitable water and ample lift
will result in a period of heavy rain, which looks to occur from
about late Sunday evening to the early morning hours of Monday. For
more details on the flooding potential, see the hydrology section
below.

The lower levels are forecast to be saturated Sunday morning and
with some weak lift there could be some pockets of light rain or
drizzle, or even a few showers. As forcing for ascent rapidly
overspreads our area and strengthens during the course of Sunday,
rain is expected to become widespread by late afternoon or early
evening. The steadiest and heaviest rain is anticipated to occur
later Sunday evening into the early morning hours on Monday. It is
during that time where there is a rapid surge in warm air advection
aided by impressive low to mid level jets. Some guidance even has
some weak elevated instability developing later Sunday night,
especially across Delmarva and southern New Jersey. While a rumble
of thunder cannot be ruled out, the instability forecast remains
rather weak therefore continued to hold off on adding a thunder
mention.

There will be a robust low-level wind field and although the robust
warm air advection over and off the cooler ocean waters tends to
create a more stable boundary layer, the guidance shows impressive 3
and 6 hour pressure falls associated with this storm and this can
compensate for any stable marine influence. The model forecast
soundings show strong winds right near the surface during its peak
Sunday night into early Monday morning and this occurs as the
boundary layer warms some. Given the latest forecast, no changes to
the Wind Advisory that has been issued for our New Jersey coastal
zones and also Sussex County, Delaware have been made. Peak wind
gusts, as of now, remain forecast to be up to 50 mph. As of now, the
thinking remains that not enough mixing occurs to bring the stronger
winds (60+ mph gusts) down to the surface. The winds should lower
farther inland as the overall mixing should be reduced, although
there should be a period of some stronger winds across the higher
elevations. A surge of warmer air will work its way northward in
advance of the surface low, and this will result in mild
temperatures Sunday with temperatures holding steady or even rising
some Sunday night.

As the surface low shifts northward across our area Monday morning,
it should then be undergoing an occlusion. This will quickly end the
rain from south to north Monday morning, although the morning
commute could be impacted with some heavier rain still falling at
least in parts of the region along with possibly some street
flooding. Some wrap around showers will still be possible Monday
afternoon. The winds will turn sharply from the west and northwest
in the wake of the storm Monday with temperatures and dew points on
the fall as cold dry air advection occurs under a gusty wind. The
model forecast soundings show rapidly improving vertical mixing
Monday as the low-level lapse rates steepen due to the strong cold
air advection. Peak wind gusts look to be up to 40 mph, which will
be partially helped by strong pressure rises in the wake of the
storm. Temperatures should peak Monday morning then fall at least
some during the day. We may hold onto some showers Monday night as
some energy wraps back into our area. Any showers look to mainly be
rain though some snow showers are possible, mainly northwest of the
I-95 corridor and particularly in the Poconos. Temperatures will
gradually cool to near freezing by daybreak Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Summary...Cold Tuesday into Wednesday followed by some moderation
but only to close to average. Dry overall through this time frame.

Tuesday...In the wake of our Monday system, a sharp upper-level
trough drops into the region, helping usher in an arctic airmass
behind the cold front. Gusty WNW winds 15-25 mph continue with a
strong pressure gradient between our departing low and a building
surface high across the Mississippi River Valley. WNW cold air
advection in combination with broad ascent with the upper trough
will combine to for a few scattered snow showers across the Poconos,
Lehigh Valley, and higher elevations across northwestern NJ.
Accumulations at this time are expected to be light, if any. Along
the I-95 corridor could see a mix of some light rain/snow showers
during the morning with little to no accumulation or impacts
expected. Areas along the coast could also see a few showers, but
would mainly be rain. Any light precipitation will largely clear out
by the afternoon as the upper level trough pivots out of the region.
High temperatures during the day will be in the 30s north and west
of the I-95 corridor with Poconos potentially staying below freezing
all day. South and west of the I-95 corridor across southern NJ and
the Delmarva will see temperatures in the low 40s. Wind chill values
are expected to be in the 20s to low 30s with the Pocono Plateau
likely staying in the teens. Overnight lows will be in the low to
mid 20s with a light WNW breeze sticking around. As a result, wind
chill values Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning will drop
into the teens across the region with single digits expected across
the Poconos.

For Wednesday through Saturday...High pressure will largely dominate
the rest of the long term forecast, keeping the forecast dry for the
most part. Temperatures will still start off cold Wednesday morning
after a chilly night, but warming up slightly by the afternoon to
the upper 30s to mid 40s. Strong high pressure will remain over the
Appalachian Range Thursday and Friday, allowing for temperatures to
rebound closer to climo. By Saturday, global guidance is beginning
to hint at a shortwave trough dipping into the region, which could
bring in the chance for some light showers, but any system that
develops from this would be rather weak.

.AVIATION /21Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE,
KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...VFR early. Low clouds and mist/drizzle then develop across
the region towards or after midnight, with IFR conditions developing
most sites. Best conditions may be near the coast (ACY) where
upslope effect is still minimized. Easterly flow will continue at 5-
10 kts. Moderate confidence.

Sunday...IFR overall with low clouds and mist/drizzle early becoming
periods of rain late. Low clouds may lift a bit before the steadier
rain arrives, so could have an interval of MVFR around midday. Winds
remaining easterly around 10 kts. Moderate confidence.

Outlook...

Sunday night...MVFR to IFR ceilings. Widespread rain with a
period of heavy rain expected overnight. Visibilities will be
MVFR or IFR due to the rain. East- southeast winds 15-25 knots
with gusts 30-40 knots at night (strongest at KACY). A period of
low- level wind shear (LLWS) likely. Moderate confidence.

Monday...IFR conditions should improve to MVFR with time as moderate
rain in the morning gradually ends followed by some light leftover
showers. Southeast to southwest winds 15-25 knots with gusts 25-35
knots, becoming westerly by the afternoon. A few rain or snow
showers possible at night, however the conditions should improve to
to mostly VFR. Low confidence.

Tuesday...VFR overall, though brief moments of sub-VFR conditions
possible mainly north and west around ABE/RDG due to an isolated
snow shower in the morning. Otherwise, northwesterly winds around 15
knots with gusts to 25-30 knots, diminishing some at night. Moderate
confidence.

Wednesday...VFR. West-northwest winds 10-15 knots, diminishing to
near 5 knots at night. High confidence.

Thursday...VFR. North-northwest winds around 10 knots. High
confidence.

Tonight...Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions in the calm ahead of
the storm. Winds easterly around 10-15 kts with a few gusts to 20
kts. Waves building to 3-4 ft late. Patchy mist or drizzle may
reduce visibility late at night as well.

Outlook...

Sunday and Monday...Gale Warning issued for Sunday night through
Monday. Initially, strong east to southeast winds ahead of the storm
will bring sustained winds of 25 to 35 knots with gusts around 45
knots Sunday night into Monday. While peak gusts later Sunday night
are likely to be around storm force, the latest thinking remains
that this may be short in duration and not all that widespread. As
the storm exits the region on Monday, winds become westerly with
gusts 35-40 knots then winds diminish at night. Hazardous seas
develop.

Tuesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely with seas beginning
to decrease but remaining elevated well above 5 feet. Winds also
begin to decrease but remain 25-30 knots.

Wednesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions possible due to elevated
seas 4-6 feet. NW winds 10-15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots.

Thursday...Small Craft Advisory conditions possible due to elevated
seas 4-6 feet building to 5-7 feet at night. Winds NNW 10-15 knots
with gusts up to 20 knots.

.HYDROLOGY...
Flood Watch remains in effect for our entire area for Sunday night
and Monday.

While a strong storm will cross the region, the exact track will
determine where the heaviest rain falls. Rainfall totals of 1.5 to
3.0 inches are forecast across the region with the highest amounts
inland from the coast overall. With the potential development of
mesoscale banding along the fronts, localized totals above 3 inches
remain possible. In any case, given the rainfall will be onto a
saturated ground, there is a flooding risk and this will be enhanced
especially if much of the heavier rain falls in a shorter period of
time. Some higher hourly rainfall rates are anticipated to occur
later Sunday night and early Monday morning. We will need to watch
some of our creeks and streams, especially the quicker responding
ones and some creeks/rivers in eastern Pennsylvania and northern New
Jersey are already forecast to get into minor flooding. In addition,
higher rainfall rates could lead to some flooding in urban
areas.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Onshore flow from the northeast to east tonight into Sunday will
gradually veer to southeast later Sunday and Sunday night. The winds
will steadily increase through Sunday evening and peak overnight.
Guidance has increased a bit with the Sunday cycles, so have issued
advisories for all ocean front areas. Still alot of uncertainty as
the strength of the wind and timing of the changes in direction will
have significant effects on just how high the waters can get... and
earlier shift may reduce the threat. Biggest risk for moderate
flooding remains on the Delaware side of Delaware Bay, where we've
hoisted Coastal Flood Watches. Guidance wants to keep water levels
elevated much of Monday, but given that it appears winds will swing
around to offshore by then, did not extend advisories/watches into
the day Monday just yet. Will watch trends closely over the next 24
hours.
