.SYNOPSIS...
Cool and dry high pressure will remain in control across the
region through the end of the week following a weak cold frontal
passage this morning. A strong low pressure system will move up
the East Coast late Sunday into Monday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Only change for the early afternoon update was to bump up winds
a bit as mixing down a swath of 25-30 knot wind not far off the
deck has been rather efficient, and coincident with a post-
frontal tightening gradient, sustained wind 10-15 mph with
gusts to 20 mph are common this afternoon and should continue
until sunset. The right entrance region of an upper jet is
driving some scattered cirrus across part of the Mid-Atlantic,
but as the jet departs to the east, clouds will do the same...

Strong ~1040 mb surface high centered over the Ohio River
Valley will build into the region from the west during the day
Wednesday. At the same time, an upper level shortwave associated
with a strong closed low over Quebec will push a dry cold front
through the region this morning. A resultant WNW flow around
10-15 mph throughout the day will help reinforcing the cold,
dry air across the region for the near term period. A few lake
enhanced showers may try to nose into the Poconos in the
northwest flow behind the front with an 850 mb thermal trough
extending down from New England, but will be battling
increasingly dry air and subsidence from the high, so chances
are very low (< 10%). Afternoon high temperatures will be
similar to Tuesday, with low to mid 40s. The cold air advection
doesn't truly arrive until Wednesday night where temperatures
are dropping into the low 20s with upper 20s across the
immediate Philly metro. Mostly clear skies and calm winds will
aid in radiational cooling as well, thus leaned a bit towards
the colder side of guidance. With that said, more sheltered
locations could cool even further with isolated teens not out of
the question for areas that radiate very well.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Upper ridging will build into the region beginning Thursday and
will persist into Saturday. At the surface, initially strong
~1035+ mb high pressure will remain in place across the eastern
CONUS through Friday. The high will gradually weaken and begin
to shift offshore and toward the northeast late Friday into
Saturday.

The high pressure will be associated with a cool and dry
airmass, with temperatures near 5 degrees below normal for
Thursday and Thursday night. Highs Thursday will be largely near
40 degrees, though it will be mostly sunny. The shut off of
cold advection and rising heights into Friday will support
modest airmass modification into Friday with temperatures
running about 10 degrees warmer than Thursday. Highs Friday will
be near 50 degrees under sunny skies. By Saturday, high clouds
will begin to increase in coverage, though it should remain
mostly sunny with highs in the low to mid 50s.

Winds will range from the northwest to southwest near 5-15 mph
through this period and lows will be mainly in the mid 20s to
low 30s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The upper ridging will begin to break down and shift offshore
Saturday night into Sunday as troughing approaches from
upstream. An interesting synoptic setup with a southern stream
trough or cutoff low across the Gulf Coast or Southeast slowly
drifting northeast toward the Mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, a
northern stream jet and trough will dive toward the upper Great
Lakes region. This setup places the East Coast in a very broad
and long duration period of upper diffluence, with a broad
and/or strong area of surface low pressure likely to develop in
response. This will likely start out as a broad and weak area of
low pressure originating across the Gulf of Mexico developing
later this week along a decaying stalled frontal boundary with
plenty of convection associated with it. The general idea is
that this low will move northward either inland or near the
coast. The 00Z ECMWF and CMC have the same general idea with a
strong coastal storm moving quickly northward along the coast
Sunday night into Monday. The 00Z GFS maintains a broader and
slightly weaker system with an inland track.

Ensembles and deterministic guidance still vary in the overall
outcome of this system for our area, though it appears
increasingly more likely that we will experience widespread
rainfall. The aforementioned origins of this system will mean an
abundance of moisture moving poleward along with it. In fact,
the 00Z deterministic CMC, ECMWF, and GFS solutions all indicate
PWat values of 1.25-1.6 inches across our area, which is near 4
standard deviations above normal for mid-December. The
antecedent ridging and polar jet located well north of our area
will translate to a primarily "warm" system, with very little,
if any, frozen precipitation.

To make a long AFD short, we could quite possibly be looking at
another widespread heavy rainfall event potentially accompanied
by strong winds and coastal flooding concerns beginning Sunday
night into Monday. Early indications are that rainfall totals
could range anywhere from 1-3 inches, locally higher. The ground
is now very saturated from last weekend's storm, so a similar
amount of rain just a week later will have much different
outcomes and greater impacts from potential flooding. There
could also be high surf and beach erosion with this system.
Details remain unclear, but anyone with hydrologic and/or
coastal interests should monitor this system closely for
potential impacts.

KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

gusts in the mid to upper teens. High confidence.

Tonight...VFR. West/northwest winds around 5 kt. High
confidence.

Outlook...

Thursday through Saturday...VFR conditions expected. Winds
generally from the southwest to northwest near 5-15 kts. High
confidence.

Sunday...Initially VFR, though ceilings likely lowering at
night as rain approaches the region. Northeast winds 5-15 kts.
Moderate confidence.

No marine headlines in effect. Northwesterly wind 10-15 knots
with gusts up to 20 knots and seas 3-4 feet. Wednesday night
could see gusts nearing small craft criteria for a few hours as
WNW winds see a weak surge. At the moment, have not issued a SCA
yet but a reanalysis during the day could warrant an issuance.
