.SYNOPSIS...
Expansive high pressure over the Northeast gradually moves into
the Gulf of Maine and Canadian Maritimes on Friday. Low
pressure will develop over the Southeast and slowly move north
along the Eastern Seaboard this weekend before departing early
next week. Relatively cool weather will linger as weak high
pressure tries to build in early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Conditions will be very seasonable across the area today with high
pressure in control. Temperatures are starting this morning in the
50s across most of the region with some 40s northwest of the I-95
urban corridor. With clear skies, temperatures this afternoon will
rise into the 70s with some upper 60s sprinkled in at higher
elevations. Winds will be relatively light around 5 to 10 mph,
gradually shifting from north-northeast to east-northeast as the
center of the high progresses eastward north of our region. Dew
points will be mainly in the upper 40s to low 50s making conditions
quite pleasant. The exception looks to be for Delmarva and
southeastern New Jersey where more easterly flow will help bring in
some relatively moist air off the ocean.
Heading into tonight, conditions will be set early on for ideal
radiational cooling once again. However, some cirrus will begin
to move in as we head through the overnight hours, which will
likely prevent temperatures from bottoming out as cool as they
are this morning. Overall, lows are forecast to be mainly in the
50s, with some upper 40s at higher elevations.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Friday will feature the last dry day of the week, before wet
weather arrives just in time for the weekend. Models are in good
agreement that strong surface high pressure will remain
anchored near Nova Scotia, with ridging extending west-
southwestward across New England and the northern mid-Atlantic.
Meanwhile, all eyes will turn toward coastal low pressure
strengthening offshore, to the southeast of the Carolinas. This
low will develop as an upstream shortwave over the Tennessee
Valley drops into a negatively-tilted trough off the Southeast
Coast, and quickly forms a closed low. The system will become
vertically-stacked and partially cut-off from the main jet-
stream flow, blocked by high pressure to the north. These kind
of storm systems can often be slow-moving and notoriously
difficult to forecast. One key will be the timing and strength
of a northern stream shortwave trough tracking eastward across
Ontario and Quebec Friday into Friday night. Guidance is in
decent agreement in a general sense in that shortwave allowing
the low to track northward across the mid-Atlantic, but then the
area of low pressure may be left behind to drift around our
region Saturday night into Sunday.
As far as sensible weather goes, look for sunshine to fade
quickly across most of our region through midday Friday as high
clouds spread northward. In contrast to the very light winds
Thursday, there will be a noticeable easterly breeze by the
afternoon, particularly brisk along the coast with some gusts to
25 mph there late in the day. That easterly flow along with the
increased clouds will keep high temperatures in the low to mid
70s. Dry air in place across our region will start to give way
to a plume of deepening Atlantic moisture wrapping toward the
coast around the low as it approaches eastern North Carolina.
Enhanced by low-level convergence and some warm-air advection,
an initial batch of moderate to perhaps occasionally heavy rain
will advance northward across the Delmarva Friday night, and
perhaps into southern New Jersey by Saturday morning. However,
the details from that point forward remain murky, as models
disagree on the northward extent of steadier rain through
Saturday, along with the timing and amounts of additional rain
as the area of low pressure tracks toward our region on Sunday.
The best compromise of forecast amounts suggests that from 0.75
to 1.5 inches will fall through Saturday night northwest of
I-95, with 1.5 to 2.5 inches southeast, with the highest amounts
right along the coast from Cape May to coastal Delaware. Those
amounts have trended somewhat lower than earlier forecasts.
While heavier rainfall amounts that those are still within the
range of outcomes, those amounts do not implicitly suggest
significant impacts or more than nuisance poor-drainage or
localized urban/small-stream type of flooding. Even that would
probably be confined to the period of time when the initial
batch of rain is lifting northward earlier on Saturday.
Precipitable water values do rise into the 1.5-1.75" range on
Saturday southeast of I-95, with dewpoints into the upper 60s
along the coast, with some potential for an isolated
thunderstorm there. Otherwise farther inland, especially
northwest of the urban corridor, the atmosphere looks
progressively less moist and more stable, which may limit the
heavy rain threat. Overall the greater threats from this system
look to be along the coast, with the potential for a period of
coastal flooding, gales over the coastal waters and rather
strong winds along the immediate coast (gusts 40 to 50 mph).
Temperatures will be rather cool as well, with highs only in the
60s away from the coast. The wild card in all of this is
whether or not the system may take on some subtropical
characteristics. That is probably not in much doubt, but whether
or not NHC deems it worthy of being named remains to be seen.
In either case, the main system will likely weaken as it tracks
northward, and it's effects may actually diminish as it arrives
on Sunday, with the pressure gradient between it and the high to
the north being the main driver of the inclement weather.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Generally continued to follow closely to NBM guidance in the
extended portion of the forecast. Sunday could still feature
some periods of steadier rain, but amounts do not look as high
as Saturday. It will be another somewhat humid but cool day,
with highs once again struggling to crack 70 degrees.
Temperatures through the middle of next week look to remain near
or slightly below typical late September levels, with highs
in the upper 60s or low 70s, as troughiness remains across the
northeastern United States. Kept some slight chances for showers
in most days due to some uncertainty at that time range and in
this pattern, but to be honest it looks like it may turn out
dry, and so if we do see any showers, rainfall amounts will
likely be light.

driven waves and low confidence in widespread seas of 5 feet or
greater, the issuance of an SCA continues to be held off for
now. However, a short fuse issuance later today remains possible

northeast to east and increase to around 10 to 15 knots. Seas

Rip Currents...
For Thursday, winds shift to the northeast around 10-15 mph along
with breaking waves increasing to near 3 to 5 feet and a long period
east swell. This is forecast to result in a HIGH risk of rip
currents for Delaware and New Jersey beaches.
For Friday, a HIGH risk for rip currents continues for Delaware and
New Jersey beaches. Onshore winds increase to around 20 to 25 mph
with breaking waves increasing to 4 to 6 feet with a continued
medium-long period swell.
Looking farther ahead to the weekend, a HIGH risk of rip currents is
likely to persist along with the potential for high surf and beach
erosion. Breaking waves may exceed 8 feet at times. East to
northeast winds near 20-30 mph with gusts over 40 mph possible as a
coastal storm impacts the region.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Despite being in between the Full Moon and the New Moon this
weekend, with strong onshore flow and a building easterly swell
on Friday night into Saturday, the threat for coastal flooding
will present with the Saturday afternoon high tide, and probably
the next high tide cycle Saturday night. Early indications are
that many locations will see at least minor coastal flooding,
with the potential for moderate coastal flooding along the
southern NJ coast. Some coastal flooding may linger into Sunday
as well, but overall waters levels should come down compared to
Saturday as onshore winds turn more northerly, become lighter,
and seas gradually lower.
