Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
One area of high pressure will remain centered in the western
Atlantic through Saturday. Meanwhile, another high pressure
system will slide across northern New England through Friday.
Low pressure tracks up the Ohio Valley and across the eastern
Great Lakes Saturday and Saturday night, with a strong cold
front crossing our area Saturday night. High pressure gradually
builds in late Monday through Wednesday, then low pressure may
track south of our area Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
The forecast remains largely on track early this morning update.
No adjustments were made....

A few strong/severe thunderstorms possible Saturday evening,
and much needed rain moves through later Saturday afternoon and
night.

Currently have some pesky stratus over some of the area, mainly
over the northern half of the CWA north of Philadelphia. Morning
satellite imagery is starting to show small signs of the stratus
eroding/lifting north as southerly flow strengthens. Will see
how this goes over the next few hours. Expecting lows in the
mid to upper 50s for most, with reading likely remaining in the
low 60s for most of Delmarva.

As we go through the day Saturday, the arrival of a strong upper-
level trough will bring active weather to the region starting later
Saturday afternoon. Prior to that however, mild to warm air will be
in place under a southeast to south wind, although the influence of
surface high pressure near coastal Maine will keep a weak onshore
flow in place. This will keep it cooler especially closer to the
coast Saturday.

Decent height falls preceding the trough along with a strong
shortwave will support surface low pressure tracking up the Ohio
Valley and eastern Great Lakes region to eventually adjacent
Canada. Strong southerly flow ahead of this system will result
in strong warm air advection, however clouds will increase Saturday
morning (outside of where any stratus remains). The forcing for
ascent is forecast to start overspreading our area from the west by
later Saturday afternoon. This is timed with a plume of 1.00- 1.25
inches of precipitable water through Saturday evening. As the trough
starts to take on a negative tilt later Saturday, enhanced forcing
for ascent will arrive into our area. As a result, showers and some
thunderstorms are expected to move in from the west by late Saturday
afternoon. Much of the area may remain dry though during the daytime
hours.

The guidance, including the convection-allowing models, continues to
show a line or broken line of convection arriving later in the
afternoon from the west. The model forecast soundings indicate low
instability, however there is near 40 knots of effective shear. This
is looking like a mid/high shear and lower CAPE setup. The timing of
the convective band would be when the instability is maximized.
Additionally, the low-level flow looks to be more south although
some of the high-resolution guidance backs the surface winds to more
southeasterly ahead of the convective band. The more southeast flow
would bring in cooler more stable marine air compared to a south
flow, although this would also increase the low-level helicity or
spin. The strong forcing for ascent that arrives early Saturday
evening with the cold front may compensate for the lower
instability. As a result, there is some risk of a few strong to
severe thunderstorms with locally strong/damaging wind gusts the
main threat especially with a low-level jet of around 40 knots.
This looks to be from about the Philadelphia metro south/west and
east, with a somewhat greater risk for parts of our Maryland
Eastern Shore zones. Given the instability forecast to be on the
lower side, convection should tend to be lower topped however a
linear mode given deep south to southwest flow may locally
enhance stronger winds down to the surface.

Prior to the arrival of showers/thunder, an increase in vertical
mixing during Saturday will result in an increasing southerly breeze
with gusts 25-35 mph during the afternoon. High temperatures are
forecast to be in the 70s for much of the area, although cooler
closer to the coast. This cold front will bring some much needed
rain to the region with rainfall totals generally 0.50-1.00 inches,
however locally higher amounts possible especially toward the
northwest zones where orographic enhancement may come into play for
a time. The main cold front will cross our area during Saturday
night with temperatures dropping back mostly into the 45-50 degree
range. The showers/thunder are expected to quickly end into the
overnight from west to east.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Showers associated with the main cold front passing through
Saturday night will likely be gone by daybreak Sunday, with
computer models in quite good agreement with respect to timing
that. That said, with the main upper-level trough still swinging
through later in the day, some isolated showers may be found
during the afternoon and evening around far northern NJ and over
toward the Poconos. The rest of the region will see a generally
sunny but cooler and slightly breezy day, with highs in the
60s. That cooling trend will continue into Monday, as a broad,
deep upper- trough over the Great Lakes and the Upper-midwest
continues to advect colder air eastward across the Appalachians.
Highs may even struggle to crack 60 degrees in portions of our
area on Monday afternoon, with a cool, northwest breeze.
Otherwise, expect a similar day to Sunday with a fair amount of
sun for most of our area. However, additional shortwaves
rotating by around the aforementioned upper-trough will keep
some clouds around areas closer to the Applachians, and would
not rule out some sprinkles around the Poconos. Low temperatures
Sunday night could be close to frosty levels locally near Mount
Pocono, but a colder night is possible for more of our area
following Monday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Tuesday morning low temperatures may be frosty across much of
our area outside of the urban corridor and the Delmarva
Peninsula. Skies look rather clear, and with weak high pressure
passing by, winds may calm down, particularly in sheltered
lower-elevation spots. Tuesday and Wednesday will remain
slightly below seasonal normals for temperatures, though by
Wednesday the airmass will start to modify as a weak shortwave
ridge passes by. Tuesday should be dry, and Wednesday will
likely be as well for at least the bulk of our area, but there
is some doubt especially toward the Delmarva later in the day,
as an area of low pressure tries to track northward out of the
Southeastern US.

Beyond that, model guidance diverges substantially, with a
'split-flow' regime across much of the country. That will favor
shortwave troughs both in the southern and northern stream
tracking eastward while interacting with each other and make
for challenging forecasts. Favored the NBM in the extended for
this reason, with just broad-brushed low-chance POPs Thursday
right through Saturday. Model solutions have varied from a more
'phased', stronger coastal storm with gusty winds and possibly
some heavy rain affecting portions of our region, mainly around
Thursday, to just weaker systems passing well to our south and
perhaps just some occasional bouts of showers. More certain are
temperatures, which will likely continue to tend slightly below
normal for late April, with highs mainly in the 60s.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of Tonight (through 12z)...Stratus over some of the area
has brought a mix of LIFR/IFR to KTTN/KPNE/KABE. Only question
mark is KRDG where stratus circles the Reading area. Kept VFR
right now for KRDG through the morning though as guidance has
stratus retreating shortly. High confidence in KILG/KMIV/KACY
staying VFR with moderate confidence in KPHL staying VFR for the
rest of tonight. Easterly winds will veer to a more
south/southeasterly direction around daybreak, around 5-10 kt or
so.

Outlook...

Saturday...sub-VFR conditions to start for KTTN/KPNE/KABE but
should lift to VFR by the mid to late morning there. VFR
elsewhere through the morning/early afternoon. Another period
of sub- VFR conditions likely, starting in the late afternoon as
a band of showers and thunderstorms will move through.
Southerly winds will peak in the 15-20 kt range, gusting up to
25-30 kt in the afternoon. Higher gusts are possible with any
thunderstorms. Moderate confidence overall.

Saturday Night...MVFR/IFR conditions likely with
showers/thunderstorms moving through over the first half of the
night ahead of a front. Southerly winds around 10-15 kt will
shift to a more westerly direction after midnight with the
frontal passage. Moderate confidence in evolution, low
confidence in timing/extent of restrictions.

Sunday...Probably turning out mainly VFR. West/Northwest winds
around 10 kt. Moderate confidence.

Sunday Night...VFR. West/Northwest winds around 5-10 kt.
Moderate confidence.

Monday through Wednesday...VFR at least until late in the day
Wednesday. West/Northwest winds around 10- 15 kt, gusting to 20
kt at times during the afternoon hours, going down to 5-10 kt
both nights. Moderate confidence.

Marine Dense Fog Advisory remains in place through 6 AM for
waters north of Little Egg Inlet as some observations have
shown periods of fog and visibility near/less than a mile.
Otherwise, no Marine Headlines are anticipated for the rest of
tonight.

Southeast to south winds are forecast to increase during Saturday as
a low-level jet moves across, followed by a cold front crossing the
area Saturday night. A period of Small Craft Advisory conditions are
possible as winds gust to 25 knots and seas on the ocean zones build
to 3-5 feet. Given that it looks to more on the marginal side at
this time, opted to hold off on an advisory. On a another note, a
southeast wind for a time may become enhanced later Saturday up
Delaware Bay. A few gusty showers/thunderstorms are possible
Saturday night with the cold front.
