Strong low pressure is anticipated to pass across the Great
Lakes on Friday night before moving down the Saint Lawrence
River Valley on Saturday. The low is forecast to pull a strong
cold front through our area on Saturday evening. High pressure
is expected to follow for Sunday into Monday. A frontal boundary
may drop into our region from the northwest on Monday night and
it could meander in our vicinity on Tuesday and Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Forecast remains on track this morning. No changes from previous
discussion.
Previous discussion...Fair weather is expected today and
tonight as high pressure will be building in. The high will be
west of the area this morning, then crest overhead later this
afternoon. Tonight it will move offshore. Mostly sunny skies are
expected and temperatures a little below normal for the last
day of March. Highs will range from the mid/upper 40s for the
N/NW areas and upper 40s/low 50s for other locations. Winds will
be west to northwest at 10 to 15 mph this morning then
decreasing by late afternoon. Light winds are expected
overnight.
We will issue a frost advisory for our Delmarva areas already
in the growing season with lows forecasted to be in the low/mid
30s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Warm advection will likely result in increasing and lowering
cloud cover for Friday into Friday night. We are also
anticipating showers to begin moving into our region on Friday
afternoon, with the potential for rain becoming categorical on
Friday night. A south to southwest wind is forecast to increase
to 10 to 15 MPH. Highs on Friday are expected to be mostly in
the 50s and 60s. The cloud cover and mild flow will likely
prevent temperatures from falling below the 50s in most of our
region on Friday night.
A strengthening low level southwesterly jet, with its core just
to our southeast, should continue to draw mild moist air into
and over our region from Friday night into Saturday morning. As
a result, we will keep showers in the forecast for Saturday
morning.
The low level jet should begin to slide away to our east and
northeast on Saturday afternoon, allowing for some clearing at
that time. Regardless, the pressure gradient will likely remain
rather tight in our region as a strong cold front approaches
from the northwest. We should experience a southwesterly wind
around 20 to 30 MPH with the potential for gusts in excess of 40
MPH. Eventually, we may need to issue a Wind Advisory for parts
of our area for Saturday. The strong flow will continue to draw
mild air into our region. Afternoon high are expected to be in
the lower 70s, except along the immediate coast and in the
elevated terrain where readings should not get above the 60s.
A robust cold front is expected to push southeastward through
our region on Saturday evening. It should bring another round of
showers. Mixed layer CAPE values are expected to be marginally
unstable, mainly in the 250 to 500 J/Kg range. Being the it will
be a fairly dynamic system, we have included a slight chance of
thunder. However, the thunder potential may need to be
increased as we get closer to the event.
Once the front passes, strong cold advection is expected to
begin. A brisk northwest wind will bring temperatures down into
the upper 20s and 30s on Saturday night.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Surface high pressure is expected to slide from the Ohio River
Valley on Sunday morning to the western North Atlantic on
Monday. We are forecasting dry weather for both days. Sunday's
highs should be mainly in the upper 40s to middle 50s.
Temperatures are anticipated to rise well into the 60s in much
of our region on Monday afternoon in the return flow on the back
side of the high.
The forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday depends on a frontal
boundary that is expected to drop into our region from the
northwest. There remains a fair amount of spread in the model
and ensemble solutions regarding the front's timing and
location. For now, we will keep above normal temperatures for
both days and mention a chance of showers for Wednesday.
