.SYNOPSIS...
A weak surface trough will become established across parts of
our region today well ahead of a cold front. The cold front is
forecast to arrive during Friday before stalling in our region
over the weekend, then this front finally shifts offshore during
early next week. Another cold front looks to arrive later
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A mid level ridge axis is off the Southeast and Middle Atlantic
Coasts and up over New England today. The feature will continue
to work its way out to sea through tonight. Meanwhile, a mid
level low is forecast to drop from the lower Ohio River Valley
to Georgia, with a short wave trough lifting from the Great
Lakes up over Quebec.
The axis of unseasonably hot air will continue to extend up the
East Coast. As a result, we are anticipating widespread maximum
temperatures in the lower to middle 90s for today. The
exceptions will be the elevated terrain of the Poconos and far
northern New Jersey, and communities right along the coast,
where temperatures should not get above the 80s. Dew point
readings are forecast to stay in the upper 60s and lower 70s. We
are expecting heat index values near or just in excess of 100
along the Interstate 95 Corridor and points to the southeast. We
will keep the Heat Advisory in place for the Interstate 95
Corridor and vicinity. Areas to the southeast have a slightly
higher criterion of 105 which should not be reached this
afternoon.
Tonight is forecast to be warm and muggy with lows generally
ranging from the upper 60s to the middle 70s.
As the mid level ridge departs to our east, some short wave
energy currently sparking showers and thunderstorms around West
Virginia will continue lifting northeastward across central and
eastern Pennsylvania during the afternoon and eventually into
northern New Jersey by the evening hours. Some showers with
brief localized downpours have popped up just west and northwest
of Berks and Carbon Counties this morning, otherwise the bulk
of the shower and thunderstorm activity is still on track to
begin around 2 to 4 pm, with the most active period from 5 to 9
PM or so. Areas north and west of the I-95 corridor,
particularly from Allentown to Reading up to the Poconos and
northwest NJ will be most at risk to see some scattered
thunderstorms, with some potential for strong, gusty winds with
the strongest storms. SPS has a portion of our area highlighted
in a 'Slight Risk' for damaging winds from severe thunderstorms.
MUCAPE values are forecast to rise into the 1500 to 2000 J/kg
range, with some modest deep layer shear as south to southwest
winds aloft increase 15 to 30 kt. Would not rule out a stray
shower or thunderstorm reaching I-95 and even just southeast of
there around or after sunset, but it will likely be in a
weakened or weakening state, with more convective inhibition and
less forcing farther south and east. Diminishing showers will
lift out to the northeast toward midnight as the shortwave
passes by, but would not rule out some isolated showers in some
spots as some weak vorticity continues to pass by in southwest
flow aloft.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Another hot and humid day Friday along with the potential for
some severe thunderstorms, then a little cooler Saturday however
still humid with some showers and thunderstorms. As an upper-
level trough remains to our west, a weak cold front will
gradually approach our area Friday before eventually stalling
across our region into Saturday.
While some additional cloud cover is expected with the incoming
upper-level trough and surface cold front, it will be another
hot and humid day Friday although temperatures should be a few
degrees lower than Thursday. Given the hot air mass, some
forecast models indicate MLCAPE near 2000 J/kg during the day
Friday. Given enough forcing for ascent, some convection is
expected to develop especially during Friday afternoon from
southwest to northeast. We may have to wait for convection off
the higher terrain to our west and southwest as it propagates
northeastward and potentially congeals into one or more clusters
or line segments. In addition, some convection may develop
along a sea breeze/convergence area in eastern New Jersey. The
deep-layer shear is not all that strong, increasing to near 30
knots, however impressive low-level lapse rates below ample
instability should tend to support some strong to damaging
convective wind gusts (water-loaded downdrafts accelerating
downward). The wind threat would be enhanced if convection is
able to organize into some clusters or line segments. An area
for potentially some more organized convection looks to be
across parts of eastern Pennsylvania to northern New Jersey and
this is where a SLIGHT risk (level 2 out of 5) is located from
the SPC (MARGINAL risk farther south and east). The convection
should tend to be on a downward trend Friday night as the
boundary layer cools and some areas become worked over assuming
some more organized convection occurs.
There may be a repeat performance on Saturday, although
temperatures will be a bit cooler and therefore the instability
is forecast to be lower. In addition the shear looks a little
less, however ample boundary layer heating should lead to
steepening low-level lapse rates once again. This would still
support some convectively generated strong surface wind gusts if
strong enough convection develops and especially if it
organizes some. In addition, the precipitable water values will
be in the 1.5-2 inch range through Saturday and therefore
convection will produce locally heavy rain. We can certainly use
the rain as it has been dry, therefore the overall flash flood
risk may be more limited unless training of convection occurs.
With the front stalling nearby, this will help high
temperatures Friday manage to reach the low 90s for much of the
area. We may need a Heat Advisory Friday for at least the I-95
corridor as peak heat indices are forecast to be right near 100
degrees. With the boundary beginning to move through the region
and continued cloud cover, high temperatures Saturday are
forecast to be in the mid to upper 80s for most locations.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Summary...Cooling temperatures and gradually lowering dew
points along with continued chances for some showers and
thunderstorms (potentially drier Tuesday and Wednesday).
Synoptic Overview...The axis of an upper-level trough initially
to our west is forecast to work across our area during Monday
and gradually weaken. A much stronger upper-level trough is
forecast to move across the Great Lakes region and adjacent
Canada early in the week before gradually shifting into the
Northeast. The timing of this feature will depend on the
amplitude of it and if it closes off or not. At the surface, a
weak cold front draped across our region Sunday into Monday is
forecast to finally get pushed offshore into Tuesday. The next
cold front looks to arrive later Wednesday.
For Sunday and Monday...The axis of a gradually weakening
upper- level trough is forecast to arrive later Sunday and then
cross our region Monday. This will keep a weak surface front
draped nearly north to south across our area. Given some cooling
aloft and some additional forcing for ascent with the trough
aloft, some increase in convective development should occur each
day especially in the afternoon and early evening hours. While
there will cooler temperatures it will remain humid, however the
instability will be held down some which should mostly lower
the severe thunderstorm risk. Locally very heavy rain will be
probable due to high precipitable water values and potentially
slower storm motions, however the region needs the rain and this
could limit the flash flooding threat.
For Tuesday and Wednesday...The weak cold front should be
offshore to start Tuesday with some drier air working in. This
may provide a window for no convection chances, however the next
upper-level trough working across the Great Lakes and toward
the Northeast will drive a cold front into our area later
Wednesday. The details with this front and the extent of
convection will depend on the amplitude and timing of the trough
and associated surface cold front. The surface dew points
should lower some more Tuesday but then may creep upward some
Wednesday ahead of the next cold front.
We will continue to monitor Hurricane Lee, however the exact
track is uncertain so far out in time and therefore so are any
possible direct impacts. Increasing swells and rip currents into
our area however do look to become more likely with time.

.AVIATION /15Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...Mainly VFR. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
developing around KRDG and KABE after about 21Z, with some MVFR
and even brief IFR VSBY restrictions possible. Variable wind 5
knots or less, becoming southerly 5 to 10 knots during the late
morning and afternoon hours. Medium to high confidence.
Tonight...A chance of evening showers and thunderstorms
northwest of I-95, but would not rule out passing shower or even
a rumble of thunder near the TAF sites between ILG,PHL,PNE and
TTN. There is some indication that more extensive marine stratus
may develop and push onshore later this evening, and
particularly after 06Z, but so far not seeing much evidence of
that coming to fruition over the ocean on visible satellite.
Thinking it is unlikely that the I-95 TAF sites end up with any
restrictions, but ACY and even MIV could see IFR ceilings and
perhaps even some fog. Variable wind 5 knots or less. Medium
confidence.
Outlook...
Friday and Saturday...Periods of sub-VFR conditions probable
along some showers and thunderstorms. Greatest chance for
showers and thunderstorms is each afternoon and evening.
Southerly winds 5-10 knots. Low confidence.
Sunday and Monday...Periods of sub-VFR conditions probable
especially with some showers and thunderstorms. South winds 5-10
knots, becoming westerly on Monday. Low confidence.

A SW wind 5 kt or so is forecast to become S or S-SE 10 to 15
knots for this afternoon into tonight. Waves on our ocean waters
are expected to be 2 to 3 feet, with waves on Delaware Bay at 2
feet or less.
Outlook...
Friday through Monday...The conditions are anticipated to be
below Small Craft Advisory criteria. Some thunderstorms possible
especially over the weekend, however the greater coverage may
remain inland.
Rip currents...
A southwest wind 5 to 10 MPH this morning is forecast to become
south 10 to 15 MPH this afternoon along the coasts of Delaware
and New Jersey. Breaking waves are expected to be 1 to 2 feet
with a long period (around 10 second) easterly swell. We will
continue to carry a LOW risk for rip currents today.
A southerly wind is expected to increase to 10 to 15 MPH on
Friday with breaking waves of 1 to 2 feet. A long period
easterly swell (around 11 or 12 seconds) is forecast. Being that
conditions will likely be similar to those of today, we will
keep the mention of a LOW risk of rip currents.
