.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front approaches on Tuesday Night, moving offshore by late
Wednesday. High pressure builds in and remains in control through
Sunday as Hurricane Lee most likely slides by well to the east.
Another frontal system looks to approach early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
1055 AM update... no changes at this time... however will be
looking very hard at need for a flood watch for late tonight and
Wednesday with the afternoon package.
4AM discussion...
Otherwise, weak high pressure builds across the region today
before moving offshore tonight. An H5 trough with strong
shortwave energy digs through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley
tonight, and a cold front out ahead of this trough will approach
the Delaware Valley and Delmarva late tonight and will work its
way through the region on Wednesday. H5 trough will into
western New York and western Pennsylvania late Wednesday
afternoon.
Warm and humid conditions on tap for today. Highs will top off
in the low to mid 80s, along with surface dew points in the mid
to upper 60s. By this afternoon, there may be enough mixing to
allow dew points to drop into the low to mid 60s. Max heat index
values will be in the mid to upper 80s. Afternoon sea breezes
may trigger some late day showers and thunderstorms across
portions of southern New Jersey and Delmarva.
With high pressure offshore tonight, return flow sets up, and
surface moisture increases late tonight with dew points rising
into the mid and upper 60s, with some areas around 70. Cold
front approaches from the west. While timing is not optimal for
convection, there are some elements that are in place hinting at
the potential for some severe weather late tonight.
00Z/12 NAM indicating MUCAPE values up around 1000 to 1500 J/kg
over Delmarva and southern New Jersey and from 500 to 1000 J/kg
across the rest of New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania. 0-6
km Bulk Shear values are also up around 25 to 35 kt, and PWATS
are 1.75 to 2 inches. As a result, can expect some locally
damaging winds as well as locally heavy rain starting after
midnight tonight over the far western zones, and then over the
I-95 corridor and surrounding suburbs, including Trenton to
Philadelphia to Wilmington, around the Wednesday morning
commute. Localized flooding is possible during this time.
Cold front then works its way through the region during the day
Wednesday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue
throughout the day. Although dew points will remain elevated in
the mid and upper 60s, the clouds and showers will knock
temperatures down several degrees on Wednesday compared to
today.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
The cold front will move offshore by Wednesday night. Some showers
and isolated thunderstorms could linger near the coast for the first
half of the night, but not expecting much overall into the night.
Overnight lows Wednesday into Thursday will be in the mid to upper
50s and low 60s.
High pressure will build in for Thursday and it looks like a
wonderful Fall-like day. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s
under a mostly sunny sky.
Winds begin to increase on Thursday Night as the gradient tightens
with Hurricane Lee moving northward between the East Coast of the US
and Bermuda. Otherwise, it will be a quiet night with mostly clear
skies and overnight lows in the mid to upper 50s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Continuing to watch the evolution and track of Hurricane Lee late
this week into the weekend. Overnight guidance continues to agree on
a trough picking up Lee on Friday morning, keeping it well offshore
from our area. Lee looks to make it's closest pass sometime Friday
or early Saturday. With high pressure trying to build in from the
Great Lakes, a tight pressure gradient is expected to set up, with
breezy northerly winds expected Friday into Saturday. Both days look
to be dry, but some clouds from the cirrus shield of Lee will be
around, mainly near the coast. Other impacts from Hurricane Lee will
include rip currents and high surf at the beaches. These hazards
look to last for most of the weekend. Temperatures will be right
around normal for the middle of September both Friday and Saturday
(mid to upper 70s).
For Sunday, guidance for the most part has Lee somewhere in the
vicinity of Maine and Nova Scotia, quickly lifting out to the
north/northeast. Closer to home, a shortwave ridge will shift over
the region, with high pressure in control. The brief period of
ridging and increased heights will result in some above normal
temperatures, with upper 70s/low 80s expected and mostly sunny
skies.
Things look to turn more unsettled early next week as guidance hints
at a frontal system approaching. This appears to be the only chance
for some showers within the long term period as it looks to be a
relatively tranquil period as long as there are no significant
changes with the track of Hurricane Lee.

Rip Currents...
Long period southeast swells of 12 to 14 seconds associated with
Hurricane Lee will build into the region starting today and
continuing through the rest of the week. Breaking waves will build
to 3 to 5 feet starting today, and then to 4 to 6 feet Wednesday.
As a result, there is a HIGH risk for the development of dangerous
and life threatening rip currents today and Wednesday, and this will
likely be extended through the end of the week..

09/11/2023 Sussex DE NWS Storm Survey
An EF-0 tornado occurred on the afternoon of
September 11, 2023, in the Dagsboro area of
Sussex County, Delaware. The brief tornado
began along Adams Road just east of Dagsboro
where damage to multiple structures and
trees was observed. A shed in a backyard of
a home on Adams Road had partial roof and
wall collapse, and an additional larger and
more structurally sound shed just feet from
the first one was shifted off of its
foundation, had the door blown off, and had
partial roof collapse. Damage to three homes
along Adams Road was noted with glass
windows blown out and partial siding and
shingle loss. Numerous large softwood trees
were uprooted along the wood line behind the
homes on Adams Road along and had large
branches snapped off of the trunks. Further
south on Adams Road, very close to the
intersection of Tingle Lane, minor loss of
siding was noted on a home as well as some
more tree and limb damage. This is likely
where the tornado reached its maximum width
of around 370 yards. The tornado then
continued a short distance down Piney Neck
Road to near the intersection of Wild Goose
Way where another softwood tree was uprooted
in the backyard of a home. The tornado
likely occluded at this point and lifted as
no further damage was found further
downstream. The National Weather Service
would like to thank Sussex County Emergency
Management Agency, local Skywarn spotter
coordinators, and the public for their
assistance with this survey.
