.A winter storm will cause travel impacts starting late tomorrow,
and lasting into Wednesday. The worst conditions will be Tuesday
morning and early afternoon. 

On Monday evening a wintry mix of rain, sleet, and ice will 
develop across southern Minnesota. Some locations may see over a 
quarter of an inch of ice, and an Ice Storm Warning is in effect. 
On Monday night heavy snow will move into southwest Minnesota, 
and spread across central Minnesota and western Wisconsin Tuesday 
morning into early Tuesday afternoon. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 
inches per hour are likely for a few hours, which will cause 
significant travel impacts as visibility drops to a quarter mile 
at times do to the heavy snow. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect
for this heavy snow, with generally 6 to 10 inches expected, with
isolated amounts over a foot possible. Elsewhere, a Winter 
Weather Advisory is in effect for areas that will see a wintry

.A complex and potent winter storm will cause travel impacts
starting this evening, lasting through Wednesday. The worst
conditions will be Tuesday morning and early afternoon.

This evening, a wintry mix of rain, sleet, and ice will develop 
across southern Minnesota. Some locations may see over a quarter 
of an inch of ice, and an Ice Storm Warning is in effect. Later
tonight into early Tuesday morning, heavy snow will move into 
southwest Minnesota, and spread across central Minnesota and 
western Wisconsin Tuesday morning into early Tuesday afternoon. 
Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely for a few 
hours, which will cause significant travel impacts as visibility 
drops to a quarter mile at times due to the heavy snow. A Winter

.A slow moving system will bring wintry weather through
Wednesday. The worst conditions will be later this morning and 
early afternoon when heavy band of precipitation lifts up from the
south across the region.

A wintry mix of rain, sleet, and ice across southern Minnesota
will continue today. Some locations may see over a quarter of an 
inch of ice, and an Ice Storm Warning is in effect. This morning,
heavy snow will move into southwest Minnesota, and spread across 
central Minnesota and western Wisconsin into early afternoon. 
Several hours with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are 
likely, which will cause significant travel impacts as visibility 
drops to a quarter mile at times due to the heavy snow. A Winter 
Storm Warning is in effect for this heavy snow, with generally 5 
to 9 inches of snow expected, with the highest amounts across 
portions of west central and southwest Minnesota. Elsewhere, a 
Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas that will see a 
wintry mix, and less snow.

The warnings will end later this evening, and transition to a

KEY MESSAGES:

- Patchy fog again tonight, a few slick spots possible mainly on the
susceptible targets such as bridges/overpasses.

- Large system with multiple precipitation types still in store for
Monday into Tuesday. Heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain all
possible depending on the area. Large-scale and widespread travel
impacts likely.

Discussion... The rest of today and into tomorrow morning will be
similar to the previous few nights, with areas of fog with little
change in the airmass until the big system arrives tomorrow. Winds
will be increasing a bit compared to last night, which already was
an improvement in terms of visibility and icing compared to Saturday
night, such that only the most susceptible surfaces will be at risk
of icing over. This once again looks to focus in western to central
Minnesota along I-94, with reduced likelihood of impacts south of
the MN River.

The primary focus for the forecast this week is coming up with a
potent weather system arriving tomorrow afternoon and lingering into
Tuesday, with the full gamut of precipitation types possible across
the area given the anticipated track of the forcing and moisture. As
was alluded to in the prior discussion, the amount of moisture and
warm air this system has to tap into is remarkable for this time of
year, within the 90 to 99th percentiles in terms of liquid QPF. The
12z model runs have done little to change what was already in the
forecast, with QPF values of 1 to 1.5 inches across the MPX CWA,
with the highest end outlier near Redwood Falls having increased
from around 1.5 to 1.6 inches of liquid. The track of the system is
still one of the most important factors in determining precipitation
type and strength, and deterministic synoptic scale models are still
pointing towards southwestern Minnesota for the heaviest snowfall,
the I-90 corridor for the best sleet/freezing rain/accumulating ice,
with a transition zone containing lower amounts of both in between
that includes the Twin Cities. Ensemble guidance is not far behind
but continues to include subtle variations based on expected
precipitation types and changes to the track. Forcing for ascent
will be present across the region due to a combination of WAA, CVA,
and deep surface low, helping to tap into the abundant moisture,
with the heaviest snowfall rates perhaps reaching into the 2 inches
per hour threshold in SW MN. Hopefully as we get within the 24-36
time range of arrival, the introduction of CAMs to the forecast
package will help pinpoint the precipitation types and better
resolve the warm nose duration and strength that will lead to our
wintry mix of p-types. For right now, the expectation is that the
highest risk for icing and significant related travel travel impacts
will be south of the Minnesota River and especially along I-90
beginning Monday evening and lasting through about daybreak on
Tuesday. The peak period for snowfall for both the Twin Cities and
elsewhere looks to be from approximately midnight to Noon on
Tuesday, with accumulations of 8-12 inches or more likely in the
areas that see mainly snow as their precipitation type. Lastly,
predominantly rain with a wintry mix of other precipitation types is
possible on the warmer side of the system which includes western
Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota, however due to the uncertainty
yet with the track and multiple precipitation type scenario, there
will likely still be significant travel impacts in these areas as
well. Snow amounts will taper off quickly to the northwest of the
heaviest hit areas, with a sharp gradient as the forcing gets cut
off. Significant travel impacts due to heavy precipitation in
multiple forms coupled with the return of people to work and school
after a holiday weekend will provide the 'perfect storm' of impacts
to make for a higher-end weather event for the area.

Behind the departing system, expect a brief period of cooler weather
with temperatures dropping into the single digits above and below
zero for lows through Friday as we gradually warm back up towards
the weekend. Sensible weather also appears largely absent barring
flurries, with wide-scale subsidence and mild weather under weak
high pressure. There does look to be some various ensembles cobbling
together a clipper or two, however suffice to say for now after
Tuesday the impacts from anything else will be limited through next
weekend.

Low stratus continues to plague eastern MN into western MN at
initialization, but while that shield of low stratus erodes to the
east, a more broad swath of low stratus is moving in from the west
and it is this batch that looks to hold strong through the overnight
hours into tomorrow. IFR ceilings will be commonplace with the low
stratus, but the deep moisture associated with the advection south of
the warm front will also aid in keeping fog going later this evening
through tonight, especially worse where winds go close to calm. The
fog and low stratus will remain in place through tomorrow, eroding
some just before the precipitation arrives from the southwest. Precip
start time is around 18z so this TAF set will be generally devoid of
precip mention (aside from the last 6 hours of the 30-hr MSP TAF).
Winds will be relatively light throughout, under 10kt, with
directions changing from westerly to northeasterly this afternoon to
tomorrow.

KMSP...IFR ceilings to start but the western edge of the low stratus
is just on the doorstep of MSP, so will expect conditions to quickly
break out to VFR within the next hour or so. VFR conditions will then
hold through most of the afternoon as the "hole" in satellite over
western-southern MN is rather considerable. Low stratus will develop
once again this evening then remain in place overnight through
tomorrow, very much likely within IFR levels. -SN can be expected to
develop by mid-afternoon and continue through the rest of the evening
as -SN (with a mixture of -FZRA possible late Monday night into early
Tuesday morning).

Impactful winter weather is likely Monday afternoon through
Tuesday evening, when a large system is expected to move across
portions of the Upper Midwest. Travel could become difficult due
to this storm's snow and ice accumulation. Impacts will vary
significantly by location with some seeing heavy snow and others
mixed precipitation with ice accumulation.
