PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out
of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone

An upper ridge which extends across the forecast area diminishes a
bit through Thursday as a progressively stronger series of
shortwaves in the northwest flow aloft move mostly into northern
Alabama and Georgia. Deep layer moisture looks to increase with
precipitable water values increasing to 1.8-2.0 inches on Thursday.
While the series of shortwaves will mainly aid in convective
development north of the area, subsidence effects with the upper
ridge will be offset sufficiently to allow for chance pops (up to
30%) in the afternoon. Some strong storms will be possible with
strong gusty winds as the main threat. High temperatures on Thursday
will be in the mid to upper 90s except for lower 90s at the coast.
With the improved deep layer moisture lessening the potential for
dewpoints to mix out, heat index values look to reach 107-109 over
southeast Mississippi and Choctaw, Washington and Mobile counties in
Alabama. Therefore, a Heat Advisory remains in effect Thursday for
this portion of the area. Low temperatures tonight will be very
mild, with mid 70s inland and upper 70s at the coast. A low risk of
rip currents is expected through the period. /22

SHORT TERM...
(Thursday night through Saturday night)

The overall synoptic pattern for the short term remains
relatively unchanged from the near term period. The pesky upper
ridge, which was previously expected to retrograde westward by
this time, looks to maintain its position over the ArkLaTex region
for a little while longer, before finally breaking down and
retreating westward by Friday night. This keeps our region under
northerly to northwesterly flow aloft, with a few embedded
shortwaves traveling within it. Plenty of moisture (PWATs
generally around 1.9 to 2.2 inches) and instability (CAPE values
around 2000-3000 J/kg) will be in place, helping to bring another
round of scattered showers and storms to the region during the
afternoon hours. Highest convective coverage will be seen for
locations east of the Tombigbee River, as subsident effects from
the upper ridge may help to limit convection for areas west. A few
strong storms capable of producing gusty downdraft winds will be
possible due to DCAPEs exceeding 1000 J/kg. We will also continue
to monitor the evolution of storms developing upstream as deep
layer shear increasing to 20-30 kts may allow for storms to
organize into an MCS. If an MCS is able to develop and push into
our region late Friday afternoon/early evening, it would likely
bring an increased risk for damaging winds, along with very heavy
rainfall and frequent lightning.

With the ridge remaining in place, highs on Friday will top out in
the upper 90s, with a few interior locations possibly
reaching/exceeding the 100 degree mark. Additionally, with dew
points surging into the mid 70s, a Heat Advisory will likely be
needed for most, if not all, of the area for heat indices between
108-112 degrees. A few locations may even reach Excessive Heat
Warning criteria (heat index values >113 degrees), so this is
something we will have to continue to monitor in future forecast
packages. A LOW risk of rip currents will continue through the
period. /96

LONG TERM...
(Sunday through Wednesday)

For the first half of the extended term, our local area will be
underneath a weakness aloft as the upper-level ridge retrogrades
back to the west, another ridge over the Atlantic builds across
the Florida Peninsula, and a trough begins to dig into the central
US. Plenty of moisture and instability will allow for the
continuation of diurnally-driven afternoon storms across the area.
With less influence from the ridge, PoPs will tick upward for the
weekend in comparison to previous days (generally around 40-50
percent). Once again, strong storms capable of producing gusty
downdraft winds will be possible each afternoon and we will also
need to keep an eye on storms developing upstream which could form
into an MCS and travel into our area via its outflow. Any MCS
that does develop and move into our area would bring a risk of
damaging winds.

By the start of the workweek, the trough digs further to the south,
helping to put us into more of a zonal flow pattern. Although the
strongest upper-level flow (and associated deep layer shear) looks
to remain over the Tennessee River Valley, several embedded
shortwaves rounding the base of this trough, in combination with
high moisture content and instability, will keep the unsettled
weather pattern in place. Depending on the eventual amplitude of
the trough, may have to watch for additional rounds of strong to
possibly severe storms.

With higher convective coverage, temperatures will trend downward
slightly in comparison to the near/short term periods, with highs
generally reaching the mid 90s each day. However, with high dew
points remaining in place, Heat Advisories will likely be needed for
most of the period for heat indices around or above 108 degrees. /96
