Things still seem on track. No changes to our headlines. We're
seeing a transition from widespread, steady snow to more showery
precip. This is due to some mid level drier air working into
southwest WI and a lull in the vorticity advection. The peak
intensity of the precip (and winds) is ongoing this evening. The
precip type continues to vary from snow in our northern tier of
counties to rain/freezing rain in our southern tier. Madison and
Milwaukee transitioned from pure sleet to a sleet-snow mix.
Janesville, Kenosha and Racine are above freezing but have a mix
of reports (FZRA and RA). There are increasing numbers of power
outages being reported in southeast WI (Racine, Kenosha and
Walworth counties).

We will see precip diminish from southwest to east WI early
Thursday morning as the surface low lifts from west central IL to
far southeast WI. Far southeast WI should see a transition to all
rain/drizzle or nothing between 6 and 9 am. Areas toward the I-94
corridor from Madison to Waukesha should see either dry weather or
a period of freezing drizzle before all precip ends during that
time. The confidence in freezing drizzle is quite low, as this is
often forecast but does not pan out. There is also a chance for a
period of light snow to swing across I-94 area from Madison to
West Bend mid Thu morning as the "last gasp" of the system moves
through.

Areas northwest of Madison to Sheboygan could see snow/sleet
persist into the afternoon hours, although it is expected to be
lighter in intensity.

The impact to the morning commute will be dependent upon how
quickly roads can get cleaned up once the precip dwindles.

Winds will switch to the west and become gusty for the afternoon.
A few light snow showers will be possible during the late
afternoon and evening as well.

.SHORT TERM...

Tonight through Thursday night:

The winter storms remains largely on track for the rest of today
into Thursday. Temps aloft are above freezing across roughly the
southern half of the forecast area, with freezing rain and sleet
reported. The freezing rain is more steady towards the Illinois
border as expected given the warmer air aloft is winning out over
the near surface colder layer. A bit further north, mainly sleet
continues given the deeper and colder refreeze layer near the
surface. Snow will largely continue across the north.

The thermal profile won't change much through the evening hours,
with a brief milder surge then expected across the southeast half
of the forecast area tonight into early Thursday as the surface
low tracks across far southeast Wisconsin. This will result in
some mixed precip farther north later tonight and early Thursday.
Additionally, model soundings show some drier air in the ice
crystal growth zone, which would suggest increasing freezing
rain/drizzle chances. The higher precipitation rates will wind
down by late this evening, but a widespread light to sometimes
moderate wintry mix will continue into Thursday morning, so
decided to leave the noon Thursday expiration time for the winter
warnings alone for now. Later shifts will be able to trim end
times if needed.

Light snow or flurries will likely hang on across at least the
northeast half of the forecast area Thursday afternoon into the
evening per lingering forcing and moisture from the surface to
around 700 mb. Temps will crash Thursday night behind the
departing system, with lows down into the single digits most
places to low teens in the far south/southeast.

.LONG TERM...

Friday through Friday night:

High pressure noses into the area for a quiet period. The influence
is transient though as a weak return flow sets up with some 925/850
isentropic ascent starting later in the day. This will increase into
Friday night leading to the potential for some light snow. This will
occur during the overnight hours and amounts look to be under an
inch.

Saturday through Monday:

A decent weekend is in the offing as we get some bounce back waa
that really kicks in for Sunday into Sunday night. The next system
will be largely a rain maker. Depending on the thermal profile we
could see a very brief period of a mix in the leading edge of the
rain Sunday night. Then as the system moves through we could see a
mix on the back side later Monday into early Monday evening before
the system exits to the northeast.

Tuesday through Wednesday:

A period of cold advection kicks in with northwest winds on
the back side of the departing low. High pressure builds in and
shifts to the east for Tuesday night. Considerable disagreement on
how a midweek system could play out heading into Wednesday. Not
particularly impressive but would be the next chance for precip.
For now will keep the NBM pops in the forecast.

.AVIATION...
(Issued 1016 PM CST Wed Feb 22 2023)

Ceilings are hovering between 7000 and 25000 ft AGL with the
steady precip transitioning to more of a showery precip. Look for
brief reductions in visibility and ceilings in these showers. The
precip type is a mix of sleet and snow at MSN, UES and MKE. Snow
north of there and rain/freezing rain south of there. The showers
may cause more snow to mix in at times.

Winds will gradually diminish overnight as the center of the low
approaches southeast WI. Most of the precip should end after 3
AM, although snow could linger toward central WI. Far southeast WI
could see all rain transition to drizzle before ending. The
middle area should see SN/PL diminish into FZDZ or nothing at all.
Not a lot of confidence in that freezing drizzle, but a period of
light fog is looking likely as the low moves through Thu morning.
Light snow showers are still possible mid to late morning and
again in the afternoon/evening. Gusty west winds will develop in
the afternoon.

East to northeast gales will persist into the evening hours as
low pressure in southern Illinois tracks northeast across southern
Wisconsin and Lake Michigan. As the low pressure tracks over Lake
Michigan winds will become westerly. West gales are expected to
develop Thursday morning across the southern half of the lake
during this time. Westerly gales will persist into Thursday
evening across the southern half of the Lake. Gale Warnings are in
effect for the duration of this period.

Heavy freezing spray is also expected across the northern third of
the lake tonight into Thursday morning due to the combination of
cold air over the lake, high winds and high waves.

As the low pressure moves northeast into Canada, high pressure
will gradually move west to east across the Great Lakes Region
Friday into Saturday. Winds are expected to remain light during
this time and will shift from northwesterly on Friday to
southwesterly on Saturday. Southwest winds will increase Saturday
night ahead of a cold front over the Lake and quickly shift to
northwesterly behind the front Sunday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of east central
Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin and southeast Wisconsin.

A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will persist across the
region into tonight. Snow is expected across central Wisconsin,
with freezing rain across the far south near the Illinois state
line. Between, sleet is expected, with snow and freezing rain
mixing in at times.

Significant travel impacts are expected from this winter storm.
Impacts to trees and power lines are also likely where freezing
rain falls. Strong east to northeast winds will enhance the

Michigan.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

East to northeast gales will persist across the open waters. In
addition, heavy freezing spray is expected across the northern
portions of the lake tonight into Thursday. Gale Warnings and a
Heavy Freezing Spray Warning are in effect.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Wednesday

Gales will persist into Thursday, especially over the southern
portion of the lake. Heavy freezing spray will remain a concern
over the northern portion of the lake until Thursday afternoon.
