.SYNOPSIS...07/100 PM.

A slow warming trend will continue through the weekend as high
pressure builds in over the region and onshore flow weakens.
The warmest days will be Saturday and Sunday. Moisture from Jova
will increase clouds and humidities over the weekend.

.SHORT TERM (THU-SUN)...07/820 PM.

***UPDATE***

Latest satellite and surface observations indicate clear skies
across the area except for some patchy stratus/fog at the beaches.
Current sounding data indicates marine inversion around 1500 feet
deep north of Point Concpetion and about 800 feet south of Point
Conception.

Forecast-wise for the immediate short term, no significant issues
are expected. With respect to stratus/fog development, confidence
is low in how widespread stratus development will be. Current
forecast could be overdone, but not enough confidence to make any
significant changes. Where stratus does develop, there could be
the potential for some patchy dense fog, especially south of Point
Conception due to the shallow nature of the inversion. Other than
any stratus/fog, skies should remain clear overnight.

Overall, current forecast looks for the immediate short term. So,
no updates are planned.

***From Previous Discussion***

The warming trend has begun in all areas except right along the
immediate coast with temperatures up 5-10 degrees from yesterday.
The marine layer depth dropped 50% last night and expecting
another similar drop tonight. Low clouds were mostly confined to
the Central Coast last night and this may be the case again
tonight. Clouds are showing little movement towards the coast and
latest HREF forecasts are maybe 50/50 at best. MOS guidance is
leaning towards less clouds and will trend the forecast that way
as well.

Not much change with the rest of the forecast. Main issues are
temperatures over the weekend and impacts from Hurricane Jova.
The warming trend will continue and peak over the weekend, but
there are still concerns about increasing mid and high clouds from
Jova and impacts on temperatures. Without the clouds this would
be a borderline heat advisory for a small portion of the area,
mainly the San Fernando Valley and possibly the San Gabriel Valley
and adjacent lower mountains. Given those two issues have decided
to table any advisory issuances one more day. In any case,
temperatures will still be well above normal across inland areas
as onshore flow to the east weakens to almost neutral by Sunday
and even gradients to the north show some offshore push. Warmest
areas will be in the western San Fernando Valley where highs
should reach the lower 100s at least, with about a 40% chance of
reaching 107. Deserts will be running a little cooler again with
highs closer to 100. Again, cloud cover from Jova could cut into
those numbers depending on timing and thickness. Overnight lows
starting Saturday morning will be getting warm, especially in the
foothills and lower mountains where temps in many areas won't drop
below 80.

The northerly push will generate some breezy north winds across
southern Santa Barbara County this weekend, strongest Saturday and
Sunday evenings, possibly needing some wind advisories there. Will
get some breezes through the I5 corridor region in the northern LA
Mountains but probably not reaching advisory levels.

Chances for any meaningful rain remain pretty remote as this point
as Jova stays several hundred miles southwest of the area. PW's do
show a noticeable increase this weekend up to around 1.5", with
some solutions higher, though forecast soundings are pretty dry
below 600mb. At best (or worst) possibly a few sprinkles or
isolated light showers this weekend but chances for much more than
that are still under 15%.

Biggest impacts could be at south facing beaches once the south
swells reach the area this weekend. This is addressed in the
beaches section below.

.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...07/138 PM.

Much cooler weather expected next week, especially by Tuesday and
Wednesday as troughing along the West Coast pushes the ridge to
the east and temperatures fall back below normal by a few degrees.
Ensemble clusters are all in good agreement on a cooling pattern
next week with negative height anomalies at least through next
Thursday. Should be back into a full marine layer pattern next
week with clouds reaching the valleys each night with slow
clearing to near the beaches each day.

.AVIATION...08/0250Z.

At 0000Z near KLAX, the marine layer was 800 feet deep with an
inversion top of 2700 feet and temp of 25 degrees Celsius.

Low confidence in coastal tafs due to uncertainty in cigs
tonight. Expect more in the way of stratus tonight, and there is a
20-40% chance clouds will not reach the coastal areas south of
KSMX.

KLAX...Low to moderate confidence in the 00Z TAF. There is a 40%
chance that there will be no cigs tonight. High confidence in east
wind component remaining below 5 kt or less.

KBUR...High confidence in VFR conds through the period.

.MARINE...07/158 PM.

No changes to the marine forecast for the afternoon issuance.

Conditions are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory (SCA)
levels for the most part through Sat morning. Then, SCA level NW
winds are expected across the outer waters late Sat through Mon,
with a 40% chance of SCA level winds across the northern inner
waters and the SBA Channel.

Seas will be dominated by a long period south swell and a short
period northwest to west swell. High confidence in hazardous 4 to
7 foot south swell building in from hurricane Jova off Mexico
Saturday through Sunday then lowering Monday through Tuesday.
Moderate confidence in timing, plus or minus 12 hours. There is a
moderate threat for the swell to be more southeast at first (160
direction) Friday into early Saturday, which may cause issues in
Avalon Harbor. Northwest to west wind swell will increase during
the same time with the winds off the coast.

Dense fog could develop near the Central Coast as early as
this morning, but is more likely Friday through early next week.
There is a moderate threat for dense fog over the weekend for the
waters off Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

.BEACHES...07/158 PM.

Moderate confidence in average surf through Friday, with 2 to 4
foot surf most common.

High confidence in a significant south swell building in from
Hurricane Jova off Mexico. Longer period (14-16 seconds)
forerunners from the SSE (160-170 direction) will first arrive
Friday into early Saturday with swell heights of 2 to 4 feet. This
should result in 3 to 5 foot surf on south facing beaches. The
swell will turn more southerly (170-190 direction) by Sunday and
stay southerly through Tuesday, with shorter periods (11-13
seconds). Swell heights will peak Saturday night through Sunday at
4 to 7 feet. This should result in 4 to 7 foot surf on south
facing beaches. Strong rip currents are likely during this time,
along with dangerous breaking waves on coastal rocks and jetties.
Considering the very warm inland conditions bringing extra people
to the beaches, especially over the weekend, this has the
potential for a high impact event. People should use extra caution
at the beach during this time, and always stay by a staffed
lifeguard tower if entering the water.

High tides will be during the evening hours, generally between 5.5
and 6.2 feet MLLW Friday into early next week. There is a
moderate threat for coastal flooding over beaches and beach bike
paths Friday evening to Sunday. There is also a low but present
threat for coastal flooding issues around Avalon Harbor and Long
Beach, primarily Friday Night through Saturday night when swells
are more from the southeast.
