Issued at 245 PM CST Sat Dec 23 2023 Water vapor satellite imagery and 500 mb analysis this morning shows subtle differences in both the polar and subtropical jets. First, the subtropical jet has a low amplitude ridge over the southern United States, and trough over the desert southwest, with the trough axis through central Utah into Arizona. The polar jet has a low amplitude ridge over Manitoba, with a trough axis extending from Alberta through western Montana and southern Idaho. This places the subtropical jet trough axis slightly further east than the polar jet trough axis, which plays into our two-part winter weather over the next few days. At the surface, a low pressure system is located in northeastern Colorado, with a warm front extending along the Nebraska-Kansas border. Widespread cloud coverage is noted over western and north central Nebraska, with rain showers across Nebraska. Further west, a cold front is across eastern Montana and Wyoming. && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... Issued at 243 PM CST Sat Dec 23 2023 The first round of the winter storm begins in earnest tonight. Precipitation continues as rain this evening. As the cold front over Montana and Wyoming moves east through Nebraska, precipitation will switch over from rain to snow, with wintry mix along the front. HREF guidance suggests the switchover begins just prior to midnight over northwestern Nebraska. Over the following hours, the switchover to snow continues moving eastward, with the majority of the area experiencing snow around sunrise. With the above freezing surface temperatures, snow accumulations do not look to be heavy with this initial system, generally 1-3 inches across western and north central Nebraska. What is more concerning will be the strong and gusty northerly winds across the area tomorrow. While snow accumulations look to be light, any accumulating or falling snow will be affected by the winds. Areas of blowing snow will be prevalent across western and north central Nebraska tomorrow, creating hazardous travel conditions on Christmas Eve. && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... Issued at 243 PM CST Sat Dec 23 2023 The developing low pressure system across the Great Plains will continue to impact the region through Tuesday night. Colder air will keep precipitation as all snow through the duration of this second part of the winter storm system. After a brief period of lighter snowfall Sunday night, snow will intensify Monday with peak snowfall rates occurring on Monday night and into Tuesday morning across areas generally east of US-183. During this timeframe, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be possible. With snow ratios of nearly 15:1 to 17:1, snow character will be light and fluffy, helping snow to accumulate quickly. This will result in grand snowfall totals of up to 14 to 18 inches across Boyd and Holt counties. Locations east of a Valentine to North Platte line will see 1 to 4 inches with a sharp increasing gradient just west of this line. One concern is where exactly this gradient will set up. A short shift either west or east will result in a drastic change in snow totals. Those traveling should be prepared for rapidly changing snow amounts over a short distance. Besides snowfall, the main hazard heading into the extended will be the increasing winds across the region. Winds will pick up by late Monday morning continuing into Tuesday afternoon and evening. Northwest gusts up to 40 to 50 (locally higher gusts) will be possible. These gusts combined with falling snow will lead to blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibilities through much of the time period. Therefore, blizzard conditions will be possible mainly across much of north central Nebraska. To make matters worse, there is also some indication of some increased convective elements to this system. This will lead to some FGen bands that will result in heavier snowfall and increased accumulations. Confidence remains low on where exactly these bands will set up, but greatest probability will remain across the north central area. Will continue to monitor the latest trends and adjustments to accumulations may be needed as the banded snowfall materializes. Snow begins to diminish Wednesday morning completely pushing out by Wednesday afternoon. Some lingering snowfall may result in some minor additional accumulations across and east of the US-281 corridor. Drier conditions return through the end of the week, however, recent snowpack and slightly cooler air will keep high temperatures in the mid 20s to mid 30s for Thursday and Friday. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z MONDAY/... Issued at 1049 PM CST Sat Dec 23 2023 A band a ran continues to shift gradually to the north roughly along a OGA to TIF to just south of ANW line. This band will expand over the next few hours with cold air undercutting it, leading to a precipitation type transition from -RA to -RASN to eventually all -SN. As this band intensifies, cannot rule out a brief window of IP at LBF. Visibilities will gradually fall with less than 1SM likely under peak snowfall at both LBF/VTN. This likely favors immediately prior to sunrise through late morning. Precipitation will gradually downtrend through late afternoon but as winds remain strong, will likely see continued BLSN leading to visibility restrictions through late afternoon Sunday.
