Ongoing Early morning Storms:

The Tornado Watch that was in effect for our far northernmost two
rows of counties has been cancelled early due to a quickly
diminishing threat as storms clustered together and gusts fronts
propagated to the SE keeping storms in suboptimal conditions to
develop stronger rotating updrafts. Additionally, a light rain
shield developing just head of convective updrafts was also acting
to diminish the severity of the storms.

Thursday:

A gust front formed through the cold pooling for convective
downdrafts is forecast to push south through the day, eventually
pushing through the vast majority of the CWA by late this afternoon.
With the under-running cooler air, surface based convection will be
difficult as vertical profiles remain nearly moist adiabatic and
therefore any reduction in surface temps under cloudy skies will
heavily dampen severe potential. Additionally, as the shortwave
impulse that spawned the initial convective push moves swiftly to
the northeast, weak low- to mid-level ridging will also move over
the forecast area which will slightly warm these layers and help
suppress deep convective activity.

As such, a General Thunderstorm Outlook is forecast for the rest of
today, with weaker storms possible along the surging gust front and
the potential for either elevated or weakly surface-based
thunderstorms later this afternoon. Either way, instability looks
very limited, maxing out around 300 J/kg areawide. Upper-level winds
at the 500mb level will remain in the 70 kt range with weaking winds
beneath that will accompany the ridging. However, this speed shear
will support a patchy rain shield across the area as well.

Friday Surface Winds:

On Friday morning a deep and stout shortwave will be lifting from
the Southern Plains into the Great Lakes region, providing ample mid-
to upper-level lift across the Southeast and Tennessee River Valley.
Aloft, very strong winds will be present across the forecast area
with HREF jet streaks showing 80-100+ kts at 500 hPa, 70+ kts at 700
hPa, and 50-65 kt winds at 850 hPa. Additionally, surface pressure
gradients across the CWA are expected to be around 12 mb, adding to
the strong surface flow. With moist adiabatic vertical profiles
remaining in the low-levels of the atmosphere added with some
daytime mixing will make it possible to bring some elevated winds
down to the surface. Models are showing confidence in sustained
winds in the 20 kt range with some variability on how strong and in
what locations wind gusts could get up to but blends put occasional
scattered winds gusts in the 35-45 mph range. As such, a Wind
Advisory has been issued for the forecast area for Friday.

Thought was given to a High Wind Watch for the far northern tier of
counties with potential wind gusts bordering on 45 mph (the High
Wind criteria for our forecast area). Supporting arguments of
enhanced pressure gradients in the northern part of the CWA and
higher elevations being more exposed to stronger upper-level winds
favored an issuance. However, confidence was wavered as models have
been overly aggressive with similar systems in the past and several
models suggesting much lower winds speeds in the area by blocking
upper-level winds from coming down to the surface. As a result of
wavering confidence, a High Winds Watch was not issued at this time
but potential for these enhanced winds remains and will be monitored
going forward.

Friday Storm Threat:

Accompanying the upper-level shortwave will be a quickly deepening
and evolving surface low-pressure system that will form in the
ArkLaTex region and move towards the northeast through the day on
Friday. By morning, the surface-low will be centered over the mid-
Mississippi River Valley and in typical fashion will start to become
occluded, which will separate the cold front from the parent low and
abruptly stop the deepening of the parent low as convective activity
enters the forecast area.

Overall, our severe potential looks much more limited compared to
how this system looked earlier in the week. However, enough
parameters are there to warrant a Slight Risk Severe Convective
Outlook for Friday. However, the Slight Risk area has begun to be
pulled northward with out latest update, and could be pulled further
north with the midday update.

So let's first talk about the potential of this storm system. (1) As
discussed earlier wind speeds aloft are going to be howling, making
any convective storm have the potential to bring severe wind gusts
down to the ground fairly easily if formed. (2) Low-level hodographs
show a well-formed, counter-clockwise curvature in the low-levels
with ample speed and directional shear that would promote rotating
updrafts within deep, convective storms with values of 0-1 km SRH
between 200-400 m2/s2. (3) Surface dewpoints will surge into the low
to mid 60s with the strong southerly Gulf fetch from elevated SE
winds throughout the day. (4) SBCAPE values peak just above 1000
J/kg ahead of the cold front. (5) The combination of these
parameters push STP values to the 2-4 range. Wowza!

So wait, what's the problem then? These parameters above alone might
suggest a pretty significant severe outbreak, and that potential
still remains as a worst-case scenario, but several changes in the
setup and model trends are showing some struggles for upcoming
system. (1) Trends over the past 5 days have slowly pushed the
surface low further and further north, thus separating our forecast
area, from the most convergence and lift associated with the parent
system. (2) The occlusion of the surface low is a more recent
development, and once occlusion occurs the strengthening process of
the parent system begins to shut down as the cyclone enters the
dissipation phase of it's development cycle. Usually once this
occurs frontal systems, conveyer belts around the low, upper-level
lifting mechanisms all begin to weaken, and thus storm severity
starts to slowly drop off. Like a boat continuing to move in the
water once the engine shuts off, it goes forward, but there's no
more acceleration. (3) Flow ahead of and behind the frontal system
are southwesterly, likely as a byproduct of the surface low
occluding and becoming more barotropic. This alignment could
severely diminish convergence and surface lifting along the frontal
zone, despite the southeastern surge of the front. (4) Despite
SBCAPE over 1000 J/kg, a long, skinny instability profile in a very
pseudo-moist adiabatic sounding isn't very helpful for strong,
aggressive updrafts. Storms tend to take longer to realize
convective potential which gives time for (5) the storms to be
sheared off, and there is expected to be a heavy abundance at speed
shear aloft with not a ton of instability to balance it out. (6)
While good surface moisture exists, PWATs are forecast to struggle
to reach 1.4 inches. This is somewhat low for our forecast area for
early Spring. Some models are also showing drier layers aloft, and
CAMs are generating storms that appear more moisture starved than
you'd expected for a severe outbreak. Finally (7) While some models
are attempting to general discrete supercells across the area,
several are also showing waves of precip ahead of the main line
across southern Georgia, directly upstream of the primary convective
line. These showers/storms could be initiated by gravity waves ahead
of the front or by the a line of storms moving ahead of the frontal
zone, but either way they would act to rob the pre-frontal
environment of heat and moisture before the supportive upper-level
dynamics can reach the area.

Time will tell and models will need time to adjust to recent weather
developments before they can be truly trusted with the Friday
system. Unfortunately, with so many parameters on a tipping point we
may not more confidence one way or another until Friday morning or
afternoon. However, enough potential remains to keep eyes focused on
Friday going forward until we find ourselves in the post-cold front
airmass.

While there is some uncertainty as to the timing of the cold front,
especially in the CAMs, the longterm outlook really starts as the
cold front exits our southwest. Thermodynamic parameters as well as
low level flow still look healthy across our SE CWA (MLCAPE ~500
J/kg, 0-3km SRH ~400 m2/s2), so a severe threat will still be
possible. The usual hazards of wind and quick spin-up tornados are
still possible with these storms. Non-thunderstorm wind gusts may be
high at times, especially for North Georgia near the start of the
longterm outlook. Winds may gust as high 35 mph, with higher gusts
possible in the higher elevations. Winds should taper off
significantly by Saturday morning.

Post frontal conditions Saturday will be dry and cool with highs in
the low to mid 60s and lows in the upper 30s and low 40s. Monday
will see an increase in moisture with a very slight chance of
showers in Western Georgia Monday evening. This marks the start of a
couple of waves of moisture and precip through the end of the long
term. Tuesday marks our first wave, with PoPs around 30% build
across the CWA, particularly to the west. This tapers off overnight
before resurging Monday, with PoPs ~50% to the north and ~30% to the
South.

afternoon at ATL after initial wave of SHRA/TSRA. TSRA chances
spike up again this afternoon during peak heating with SHRA
