Short Term (Today through Sunday Night)...
Latest surface analysis has depicted the deepening low pressure cell
tracking eastward across the northern CONUS, dragging its associated
cold front from Montana to the northeast corner of Wyoming. Off the
the west, high pressure builds across the Western Seaboard and will
play a role as we move into the weekend. Observations throughout the
morning have seen colder temperatures today as a result of the
passage of the primary wave yesterday, with temperatures in the low
30s for the majority of areas in southeast Wyoming and in the low
40s for areas out east across the Nebraska Panhandle, and some light
snow recorded at Rawlins/Laramie where satellite imagery show some
snow banding taking place.
Forecast remains on track for the day, with the secondary boundary
is expected to dig south across the CWA, giving some light
precipitation across the lower areas for southeast Wyoming. Before
the arrival of the boundary, mainly westerly flow is expected with
increased upslope flow for the Sierra Madres and Snowy Range.
Already seeing some light banding for areas near Rawlins, where CAPE
values hover from 100 to 200 J/kg from Carbon to Albany County. All
in all, these features should aid in some better snowfalls for the
mountain ranges with some continued snow banding possible and around
40% to 60% chance of this occurring across the Sierra Madres and
Snowy Range per the HREF. Although, any snow squall threats appear
minimal with only light snow for KRWL and visibilities staying
around 2sm to 4sm, cannot fully rule out decent amounts of snow from
these bands as KLAR has a band move through the zone and reduced
visibilities to just under 1sm and some accumulations. Winter
Weather Advisories remain in effect through tomorrow morning for any
additional accumulations expected across those ranges. Although the
main threat for blowing snow has continued to diminish with the
strongest winds observed yesterday. Will allow the headline to run
its course for any additional accumulations for the boundary digging
across the zone.
Additional concerns for the short term forecast include the
continued chance for strong winds to return to CWA this weekend.
Strong jet energy is progged to push through northeast WYoming, and
placing our wind corridors across the Left Entrance Region of the
jet, with pressure falls developing on the lee side of the Laramie
Range and increased gradients. Surface gradients appear at play with
this event, with generally 4mb gradients spanning the Arlington
zone, and similar for Bordeaux an overall favorable flow. NBM v4.1
Probability of Exceeding 48kts has begun picking up on these
features, with higher likelihoods (70% to 85%) of strong winds for
areas along and east of the Laramie Range and similar for the wind
prones long I-80. Main uncertainty exists for the south Laramie
County and if they flow is able to maintain its strength downstream.
In-house model guidance has maintained lesser probabilities (under
30%)for criteria based winds to reach the across the I-25 corridor
in Laramie County. Will need to re-evaluate throughout the coming
forecast packages, with 700mb wind speeds in excess of 50 knots for
southern Laramie County and if those winds are able to make its way
down to the surface. Regardless, will be a windy day for Cheyenne
with wind gusts up to 45 knots likely (around 80%).
Long Term (Monday through Friday)...
An upper level low emerging out of the northwest flow will begin
digging into the intermountain-west early next week with multiple
shortwaves ejecting in the flow. Additionally, a trailing cold front
associated with a surface low tracking across south-central Canada
will pass through Monday afternoon with northerly low level flow
eventually turning easterly. This will result in the potential for
light snowfall with weak frontal forcing and upslope flow across the
Pine Ridge as well as the Laramie Range and eastern foothills. The
main timing for snowfall looks to be late Monday afternoon into the
evening, but could see light snowfall linger throughout the day
Tuesday. Overall, this still looks to be a quick system with minimal
accumulations. Latest NBM probability of exceeding 1" of snowfall
continues to only linger around 10-15% for the Pine Ridge and
eastern foothills of the Laramie Range.
Deterministic guidance has come in better alignment with the
development of the upper level low closing off near the four corners
region for the middle of next week, but uncertainty still remains.
The best dynamics with this system will remain well to the south,
but latest cluster analysis shows a numerous GEFS members trying to
keep some precipitation along the Front Range near the CO/WY border.
With the slow moving upper low positioned to the south, will see
cooler temperatures persist through the week as well as a break from
high winds.
