High Wind Warning expired at 5 PM for WY Zone 110 and was cancelled
for WY Zone 106 as winds decreased during the past few hours. High
Wind Watches remain in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday
morning for much of Southeast WY.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)
Issued at 306 PM MST Sat Feb 25 2023

A windy day across the area with the wind prone areas of Arlington
and Bordeaux continuing to verify their warnings throughout the day
with frequent gusts up to 60 MPH. Even Cheyenne made a brief run at
60 MPH as a localized mountain wave brought strong winds to the
city. Winds around Arlington are slowly starting to weaken as
gradients west of the Laramie Range ease. The High Wind Warning for
this zone looks on track to expire at 5 PM this evening. The
Bordeaux zone also looks on track to expire at 11 PM tonight as
winds aloft ease later this evening and the better subsidence pushes
further north. May have to consider expiring the east Platte zone
earlier than 11 PM as the winds around this area have not been as
strong as expected this afternoon.

A brief break from the wind is expected Sunday morning, but high
winds make their return once again Sunday afternoon. An approaching
cold front will cause MSLP gradients along and west of the Laramie
Range to rapidly tighten Sunday afternoon. This will lead to a
stronger and more widespread wind event across southeast Wyoming and
potentially, portions of the southern Nebraska panhandle. Winds
aloft creep up into the 60 to 65 kt range with fantastic downward
omegas along the Laramie Range, and even over portions of the
Interstate-25 corridor. These winds should have no problems finding
their way down to the surface. Did decide to add Goshen and east
Laramie County to the existing High Wind Watch as some of the
strong winds aloft were over these areas with good subsidence.
Strongest winds will likely be felt overnight with widespread 65
MPH gusts, and maybe even a few wind prone sites gusting up to 80
MPH! Did not upgrade any of the High Wind Watches to Warnings with
this package as to not interfere with the Warnings already in
place this afternoon. However, confidence is there to upgrade
most, if not all of the High Wind Watches.

An upper-level shortwave passing to the south of the CWA will bring
a prolonged mountain snow event, as well as cooler temperatures on
Monday. Hi-Res models are already showing snow starting in the Snowy
and Sierra Madre Ranges as early as Sunday morning. This shortwave
trough will provide an ideal set-up for the Sierra Madre Range with
moist southwesterly flow. This direction is favorable for orographic
snowfall across the range. Can expected between 12 and 18 inches of
snow over the course of two days, with up to two feet possible above
9000 feet for the Sierra Madre Range. The Snowy Range will see less
snow at 10 to 16 inches as they will be shadowed by the Sierras in
this event. As a result, decided to upgrade the existing Winter
Storm Watches to Winter Storm Warnings based off the snowfall totals
Sunday night through Tuesday. This event looks to stay mainly to the
mountains Sunday and Monday. Temperatures across the region on
Monday will drop about 10 degrees behind the front compared to
Sunday's high temperatures.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday)

Tuesday-Wednesday...Fast zonal flow aloft prevails with a series of
progressive shortwave troughs passing overhead producing orographic
snow showers confined primarily to our Snowy, Sierra Madre and
Laramie Ranges. The best coverage of snow will be on Wednesday when
low and mid levels will be the most moist. After seasonably mild
temperatures on Tuesday, a cold front will bring cooler temperatures
for Wednesday with 700 mb temperatures near -13 Celsius. The primary
weather effects will be occasional strong west winds, mainly for our
Wyoming wind prone locations such as Arlington, Bordeaux and
Vedauwoo where our local wind model and Craig to Casper height
gradients look favorable for wind gusts approaching high wind
criteria at times. Have adjusted our wind grids to account for these
locally stronger winds.

Thursday...As the trough aloft passes overhead and winds aloft turn
northerly, decent surface to 700 mb gradients suggest a breezy to
windy day, along with slightly colder temperatures in the wake of a cold
frontal passage. Looks like enough cyclonic flow aloft to produce
isolated to scattered snow showers, most numerous over the mountains.

Friday...Heights aloft rise some 60 meters at 500 mb with the flow
aloft backing to northwest, and with 700 mb temperatures rising to
near -10 Celsius, maximum temperatures will be warmer, in the mid
20s to lower 30s west of I-25, and mid 30s to mid 40s east of I-25.
Low and mid level gradients look sufficient to produce windy
conditions with deep unidirectional northwest flow.

Saturday...Uncertainty prevails in the forecast models for day 7,
thus will continue with low POPS and cool temperatures to blend with
our neighboring forecast areas, until the models converge on a
solution.

VFR conditions expected for the forecast period, although there is
a slight chance for some fog development around sunrise in the
Nebraska panhandle, but the confidence is too low to add to the
TAF at this time. Other than that, generally light winds tonight
mostly out of the south, which will continue into Sunday morning.
A robust cold front will push through Sunday afternoon, increasing
the westerly winds behind it. A few snow showers in the vicinity
of KRWL are also possible around the frontal passage.

Increasing westerly to northwesterly winds behind the front at all
terminals. Gusts of 40 knots or higher will be possible towards
the end of the TAF period, especially likely at KCYS.

Strong west to southwest winds will gradually subside this
evening. Gusts to 65 MPH will be possible through early
evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY

Strong winds will redevelop wind prone and adjacent areas of
southeast Wyoming Sunday into Monday morning. Please refer to
the High Wind Watches for more details. Blowing snow and reduced
visibility are expected.
