Well advertised strong wind event beginning to take shape across
southeast Wyoming this afternoon. Forecast challenges deal with
continued strong winds and onset of heavy mountain snow as a
strong cold front moves through the area.
Currently...Peak wind so far this afternoon has been 81 mph at
Strouss Hill out by Arlington and EMKAY UPR site in the I-80
Summit foothills. 78 mph reported at Quealy Dome and Arlington.
This with Craig to Casper 850/700mb height gradients 62/70mtrs.
Upper trough moved through earlier this morning and winds
responded behind the trough pretty much right as forecast. Craig
to Casper height gradients continue to increase this evening after
00Z...peaking at 88/84mtrs at 06Z tonight. GFS 700-800mb winds
widespread at 65-70kts at 06Z that will continue through at least
18Z Monday. Current high wind warnings look to be on track so far.
Later shifts need to be watching the southern Nebraska Panhandle
as GFS 800mb winds up near 40-45kts Monday morning. May need some
wind headlines out that way for a time tomorrow.
Possibly a small break in winds Monday afternoon for a few hours
before they pick up again late afternoon/evening. Perhaps our
strongest winds Monday evening as Craig/Casper approaches
93/81mtrs. GFS winds 70-75kts Monday evening into Tuesday morning
across much of the southern CWA.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday)

Confidence is increasing in a potent storm system with accumulating
snow and bitterly cold temperatures impacting the vast majority of
southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska panhandle Tuesday night
through Thursday morning.
On Tuesday evening, a deep and vigorous upper level trough will be
pushing into the west coast. Decent moisture will be streaming out
ahead of the trough, producing snow over the northern plains along a
stalled frontal boundary. As the trough pushes closer, the surface
front will crash southward across the high plains Tuesday evening
into Tuesday night. The strong arctic high over the Canadian
prairie will work in and quickly reverse the cross-barrier
pressure gradient, bringing an abrupt end to the prolonged strong
westerly winds Tuesday evening. Surface winds are expected to be
northeasterly across much of the high plains, and the front should
move fairly effectively into Carbon/Albany counties. The exact
timing is still somewhat uncertain, but generally thinking it will
largely clear the area, except for the mountains and southern
Carbon county by daybreak Wednesday. The NBM seemed a little slow
with the frontal progression compared to most other guidance, and
these systems generally seem to come through faster than modeled.
Therefore, accelerated the temperature drop ahead of the NBM by a
few hours, leading to most of the area ending up below 10F by
sunrise. With a stiff northeasterly breeze expected, daytime wind
chills could be as cold as -10 to -20F.
While it will be bitterly cold at the ground, forecast soundings
show a sharp inversion over much of the area. A strong 700-mb low is
expected to deepen across northern Utah heading towards Wednesday
morning, which will turn the lower free-atmospheric flow towards a
more SSE direction over the high plains, and easterly across the gap
areas over Carbon/Albany counties. This overrunning will bring in
impressively strong positive theta-e advection across the area after
about 06z Wednesday, with significant isentropic lift supporting
effective precipitation production despite the cold surface
temperatures. To add to that, models are now trending towards
stalling a low-level frontogenetic band over portions of Carbon
county for nearly 18 hours. Due to this, confidence is increasing
in Carbon county, including Rawlins, receiving significant impacts
from this storm. ECE and GEFS mean QPF at KRWL are around 0.8 to
0.9 inches, which would lead to substantial snowfall at
climatological snow ratios. Impacts should begin a little earlier
in Carbon county, with orographic lift in moist westerly flow
during the day on Tuesday. Strong westerly winds Tuesday will
likely cause significant blowing snow impacts, but winds should
drop off abruptly with the front. However, we are still watching
increasing potential for potent easterly/northeasterly winds
across Carbon county during the day on Wednesday with fairly
strong reverse pressure gradients through the gaps.
Still, the main period for widespread heavy snowfall still looks to
be midnight to mid afternoon Wednesday, including over the high
plains. Looking at a fairly widespread 6 to 12 inches right now for
almost the entire area, with good ensemble agreement on 0.45 to 0.75
inches liquid. Some exceptions include areas shadowed in low-level
easterly flow such as the Laramie valley and perhaps the Shirley
Basin and Saratoga area. There is also higher uncertainty in the
southern and eastern Nebraska panhandle, which could be near the
edge of the most favorable dynamics. All considered, had the
confidence to issue a Winter Storm Watch for nearly the entire
forecast area, except the Laramie Valley and Cheyenne county. The
mountain zones were upgraded to a warning, where there is high
confidence for one to three feet of snow in the higher elevations.
Some of the areas mentioned above with lower confidence are still
included in the watch since the most likely scenario at this time is
warning criteria snowfall, but there are some failure modes for this
areas so depending on how the trends progress over the next few
days, some may need to go to advisories. Will see how things
progress over the next 24 hours, but the overall message is that
confidence is increasing in an impactful winter storm for most of
the forecast area.
The 700-mb low will shift across the area around 00z Thursday, and
turn the 700-mb winds to southwesterly, and then westerly. This will
shut off the overrunning moisture advection and isentropic lift,
bringing an end to most snowfall for the lower elevations by
midnight Thursday. Very cold air will be left behind across the
entire area. GEFS mean 700-mb temperatures drop below -20C between
00z and 06z Thursday, but warm air advection aloft resumes fairly
quickly after. Ensemble mean lows Thursday morning are between -10F
and -15F for most of the area, likely challenging some daily record
lows. With even just a little bit of wind, we will likely be looking
at wind chill headlines Thursday morning for most. Expect a cold day
Thursday afternoon, especially over the Nebraska panhandle. Warm air
advection should moderate things slightly in the windier areas of
Wyoming, but the lower valleys further east could stay strongly
inverted. Beyond Thursday, forecast uncertainty increases
considerably. Models are trending towards showing a vigorous upper
level low lingering over the west coast with moist SW flow that
could keep mountain snow showers going through the weekend.
Temperatures moderate on Friday through Sunday, but are likely to
remain below average. There is also some concern for increasing
winds particularly on Saturday, which may cause renewed blowing snow
concerns, but this is still quite a ways out.

Strong northwest flow aloft will remain over the region Monday with
intense low to midlevel pressure gradients remaining over southeast
Wyoming. Aviation concerns will generally revolve around winds and
LLWS when surface winds decouple from winds aloft. BKN-OVC Mid to
high clouds expected due to mountain wave activity.
HAZARDS/WEATHER TRENDS: Trended TAFs towards the more windy solution
since strong winds have not eased much at KRWL, KLAR, KCYS late last
night. Winds have been gusty at times across western Nebraska, but
not nearly as strong so kept LLWS for most Nebraska terminals
through early Monday morning. Still expect some lull in the strong
winds across the southeast Wyoming through 12z Monday, but kept wind
gusts of 30 to 45 knots prevailing.

afternoon will continue through Tuesday. High Wind Warnings in
effect for most areas in southeast Wyoming. A cold front
approaching the area from the west Monday afternoon will bring
widespread snow to the area with mountains seeing several feet of
snow. Lower elevations will see 6-10 inches for many locations
into the Nebraska Panhandle. Afternoon humidity remains well above
critical levels...so fire weather concerns will be minimal. Snow
