.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure will move east from Ontario into Quebec today
with dry and cool weather across Western New York. Strong low
pressure will then move through the Great Lakes Saturday and
Saturday night, bringing a few rounds of rain, possibly starting as
a wintry mix early Saturday over higher terrain. Localized high
winds are possible along the Thruway well south of Buffalo late
tonight into Saturday. Then, another round of high winds are
possible along the Lake Erie shoreline and across the Niagara
Frontier Saturday night. Dry weather should return by Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Quiet weather is expected today as high pressure moves from Ontario
to Quebec. With a cold front stalled well to our south across the
Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, cool northwest flow will allow for
upslope stratus this morning before breaking up this afternoon as
stable lake shadows develop, although higher cirrus will partially
mask lower clouds. Highs today will range from the low 40s and upper
30s across the North Country to the mid/upper 40s across the far
Southern Tier.

Moving into tonight, attention quickly turns to a southern stream
trough which will initially be over the mid-Mississippi Valley this
evening. This trough will deepen as it treks northeastward, with the
rapidly strengthening attendant surface low centered just south of
Lake Michigan by early Saturday morning. This will nose a strong (60-
65kts at 850mb) LLJ into the region, resulting in a swath of
precipitation that will move northeast into the forecast area from
the Ohio Valley late tonight into Saturday morning. Latest guidance
has trended a bit slower with onset timing, with precip not expected
to arrive in the western Southern Tier until around 4AM-6AM. Precip
will then quickly spread northeastward, with most areas south of
Lake Ontario seeing wet weather by or after daybreak.

The track of the low will allow a rather aggressive warm layer aloft
to advect into the region, which will result in a variety of
p-types being observed early in the morning before a quick
changeover to rain. Best chances for this ~1-2 hr event look to be
across portions of Allegany County, as well as the hilltops of
Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties. Overall impacts should be limited
given the short duration of the wintry p-types. Otherwise, low
temperatures tonight will range from the mid 30s across far western
NY to the upper 20s east of Lake Ontario.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
...Strong winds possible Saturday and Saturday night...

This period will feature another round of active weather through
Sunday. This will come courtesy of a southern stream trough
initially over the mid-Mississippi Valley Friday evening, which
deepens and ejects northeastward across the central Great Lakes
Saturday, before weakening and opening up while sliding across
Quebec and the Canadian Maritimes Saturday night and Sunday. At the
surface, good agreement that surface low rapidly deepens as it
crosses Lake Huron Saturday afternoon before it too weakens as it
slides across Quebec on Saturday night.

Widespread precipitation, with some wintry mix, will be ongoing as
the day starts on Saturday. Some hint that steady precip could taper
quickly on Saturday morning over western NY behind initial wing of
moderate precip on nose of low-level jet. Greatest chances of
sufficient cold air to result in snow/sleet or even freezing rain on
Saturday morning will be over the higher terrain of the Finger Lakes
to southeast and east of Lake Ontario. Sfc temps will be marginal so
kept most of the snow accumulation on Saturday morning anchored to
the higher terrain where temps will be within a few degrees above
32F. Moving into Saturday afternoon, heaviest precip will shift
north of Lake Ontario. Ptype by afternoon will be rain all areas.
Tongue of higher MLCAPE moving into western NY ahead of primary
upper low and approaching sfc cold front is enough to put a very
small (less than 20%), but non-zero chance of thunderstorms in the
forecast which matches the general thunder risk highlighted by SPC.

Of greater concern with this system will be the potential for a
couple rounds of stronger winds. Low-level jet of 50-60 kts will be
overhead on Saturday, but there will be stronger warm-air advection
occurring as it is overhead. The one area of the CWA where that
could be overcome is where southeast winds will downslope along the
Lake Erie shoreline in Chautauqua into S. Erie county. That area
could see wind gusts 55-60 mph between 8 am and 3 pm on Saturday.
Second round of stronger winds occurs Saturday evening through
Saturday night when 50-60 kt low-level jet is still overhead but
when cold air advection is ongoing, leading to more efficient mixing
of stronger winds to the sfc. Location of low-level jet axis and
highest signal from ensemble guidance points to greatest chance of
seeing 55-60 mph winds Saturday evening and night along the Lake
Erie shoreline and also across the western Niagara Frontier,
centered on N. Erie/Genesee and Niagara counties. These areas at
current is where greatest confidence is for seeing warning criteria
winds. Not as confident on the edges of this corridor (Wyoming,
Monroe). Ultimately, will keep the watch going and let later shifts
make final call on warning versus advisory. Elsewhere more in the
way of lower-end advisory criteria gusts appear possible both
Saturday and Saturday night...and with the more marginal conditions
and lower confidence in these areas will also opt to address these
later on as the event draws closer.

On Sunday the primary low will weaken considerably as it translates
eastward across Quebec and continues to transfer its energy to the
strengthening coastal system...with high pressure and drier air
nosing into our area during the afternoon. This will result in still-
rather windy conditions Sunday morning giving way to diminishing
winds Sunday afternoon...along with lingering scattered rain and
snow showers east of Lake Ontario steadily winding down. With good
mixing still in place coupled with the return of some partial
sunshine, Sunday's highs should range from the upper 30s to mid 40s
east of Lake Ontario to *at least* the mid 40s to lower 50s
elsewhere...with the warmest readings found across the Finger Lakes
Region. Sunday night should be mainly dry and quiet as the surface
ridge further builds across our region...with lows mainly ranging
from the mid 20s to lower 30s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Heading into the new work week, subtle upper level ridging will be
in the midst of advancing eastward across the eastern Great Lakes.
Meanwhile a broad upper level low spanning across northern Canada,
will spread a trough southward across the north-central portions of
the continental United States. As the ridge pushes eastward, the
trough to the west will dig and dive into the upper Great Lakes
region, and then continue across the lower Great Lakes to the east
coast Tuesday into Wednesday.

Translating the upper air pattern down to the surface, a surface
high over southern Ontario, Canada will reside over the lower Great
Lakes Monday. This will result in a period of dry weather. Then due
to cyclogenesis from the digging trough aloft, a weak surface low
will develop over the mid Mississippi River valley before passing
east across the Ohio Valley and then off the east coast. Still
differences in models with regard to extent of rain/snow with this
system, especially how far north it extends into the northeast.
Result is a low chance (20-30%) of precipitation at this point later
Monday through Tuesday night. Beyond this another weaker trough and
sfc reflection works across the lower Great Lakes and northeast
midweek but again low chances for any precipitation.

Overall the general troughing pattern aloft will result in temps
averaging slightly below normal Monday through Thursday. High temps
will mainly be in the low to mid 40s. Low temps will be in the mid
20s to lower 30s, though a bit cooler east of Lake Ontario.

.AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Lake effect and upslope stratus will develop this morning as a
cool northwesterly flow remains in place. Cigs under this
stratus are expected to be mainly MVFR, with VFR high cloud
cover where stratus is absent. Patchy IFR possible where the low
clouds intersect the higher terrain areas of the Southern Tier
and Tug Hill. The lower deck clouds will clear out by this
afternoon with stable lake shadows developing, though VFR mid
and upper level clouds will likely continue to stream overhead
through the day.

VFR through the bulk of tonight, but conditions will quickly
deteriorate to MVFR and IFR late tonight into Saturday morning
as a strong low pressure system tracks into the central Great
Lakes. A wide swath of precipitation will spread southwest to
northeast, arriving in the Southern Tier (KJHW) around 08z, then
reaching KIAG/KBUF by 10z. Precipitation may start out as wet
snow or a wintry mix with sleet before quickly changing over to
all rain.

Outlook...

Saturday...MVFR/IFR with rain, possibly starting as a period of wet
snow or mixed precipitation. Strengthening east to southeasterly
winds.
Saturday night...MVFR/IFR improving to VFR with rain tapering off.
Strong southwesterly winds possible across the Niagara Frontier
including KBUF and KIAG.
Sunday...Mainly VFR, through MVFR possible across the North Country
due to lingering mixed rain/snow showers.
Monday...Mainly VFR.
Tuesday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of rain/snow showers.

High pressure will build east across Ontario and Quebec today with
diminishing winds.

Strong low pressure will then move from the Ohio Valley into lower
Michigan Saturday, then move across Lake Huron into Quebec Saturday
night through early Sunday. East to southeast winds will increase in
advance of this system, and may briefly approach gale force
Saturday. A longer period of southwest to west gale force winds are
more likely Saturday night through early Sunday following the
passage of the strong cold front.
