.SYNOPSIS...
An unusually robust storm system for this time of year will bring us
a taste of Fall today and tonight, as most areas will experience
temperatures more typical of late September. The very cool airmass
will support scattered showers as well, especially later today for
sites southeast of Lake Ontario where lake enhanced showers may be
accompanied by some thunder. As the large storm system exits this
weekend, high pressure to our south will take control into Monday.
This will allow for a rather quick return to mainly dry, summery
weather.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
...A Taste of Autumn to End the Work Week...

An anomalously deep upper low and associated longwave trough will
cross our forecast area today. While the bulk of the rain associated
with this system has pushed to the east...we can still anticipate
more showers and possible thunderstorms. This will mainly be the
case during the midday and afternoon when a ribbon vorticity within
a deep cyclonic flow will combine with impressive lapse rates from
an environment of H5 temps averaging -15c will support at least
scattered low topped convection.

The most widespread showers and possible thunderstorms will be
found southeast of Lake Ontario this afternoon when lake enhanced
lift should result in widespread moderately heavy showers from Wayne
county across Oswego county to the southern slopes of the Tug. Have
aimed WELL above guidance in what should be an 'easy money'
adjustment.

Otherwise...today will be a very cool and breezy day with
temperatures more characteristic of late September. H85 temps in the
vcnty of 6 to 8c will hold afternoon temps in most areas in the
upper 60s to near 70...with readings across the higher terrain of
the Southern Tier struggling to the lower 60s. A 35-40kt low level
jet within a cold advective pattern should largely mix...so am
anticipating winds of 30-35 mph at times.

Tonight will feature gradually improving conditions from the
west...as the large closed low will exit to our east via the St
Lawrence valley. This will allow showers to taper off and end from
west to east...with clearing skies over the far western counties.
The only active weather will be found east of Lake Ontario where
shortwaves rotating around the backside of the H5 low will combine
with some lake enhancement to keep showers in place. It will be a
very cool night with mins ranging from 60 along the immediate lake
shores...to the mid 50s for the more densely populated areas to the
upper 40s across much of the Southern Tier.

The large upper level storm system will start to open up on Saturday
as it will slowly exit via the St Lawrence valley. Meanwhile...fairly
impressive height rises will take place over the Lower Great Lakes
with sfc high pressure being centered over Ohio and West Virginia.
The associated subsidence will team up with notably drier air in the
lower levels to allow for plenty of sun over the western counties...
while slow clearing will be found east of Lake Ontario.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Northwest flow aloft this period between an exiting upper level low
over Atlantic Canada and building ridge over the Central Plains.

Primarily dry this period, though any impulse in this NW flow could
bring an isolated shower, mainly Sunday when moiture fields are a
little better.

At the surface winds will back around to southwest by Sunday, and
with warm air advection we should see afternoon temperatures into
the low to mid 80s.

This southwest flow will keep Sunday night on the mild side, with
lows ranging through the 60s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A strong ridge will build over the Central Plains this period, with
a +2SD temperature plume over the Plains. While this ridge, and hot
air plume will remain to our west, we'll be with northwest flow,
with a longwave trough to our east over eastern Canada.

Monday a cold front will drop across our region. Ahead of the front
it will be cloudy, and humid with dewpoints into the mid to upper
60s. A few showers will be possible, mainly east of Lake Ontario
where moisture profiles are slightly better.

Cool and drier air in this northerly flow Monday night through
Wednesday will bring increasing odds for below normal temperatures,
especially Tuesday and Tuesday night.

By Wednesday night through Thursday a few impulses within this
northwest flow may bring a few showers or thunderstorms to close out
the period.

.AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Mainly VFR conditions will be in place across the region for the
remainder of the overnight...although there will still be some
showers around...mainly east of Lake Ontario. The exception will be
across the Southern Tier where IFR cigs will be likely.

After daybreak...cigs of 2500-3500 feet will give way to mainly VFR
weather during the midday and afternoon. Again...showers will be
found at many locations with the most steady pcpn forecast later in
the day southeast of Lk Ontario where there may also be some
thunder. Winds on Friday will gust to 30 knots at times.

Most of the showers will exit this evening. This will leave mainly
VFR weather across the region.

Outlook...

Saturday...Areas of MVFR with showers east of Lake Ontario improving
to VFR elsewhere.
Sunday through Tuesday...Mainly VFR weather.

.MARINE...
Small craft advisories and associated beach hazards are in place
throughout the Lower Great Lakes today...as an anomalously deep
longwave trough will pass over the region. Fresh to strong
westerlies today will weaken somewhat tonight while becoming more
northwesterly in the wake of the exiting longwave trough. Most of
the SCA's run through tonight...mainly on Lake Ontario.

The very cool environment through this evening will be favorable
for the development of waterspouts. Mariners should be extra
vigilant...particularly in the vcnty of any showers.

While high pressure building across the Lower Great Lakes will
weaken the sfc pressure gradient over the region...winds and the
resulting waves will be slow to subside on Lake Ontario. SCA's will
thus remain intact on Lake Ontario through much of Saturday.

Moderate southwesterlies will be found over the region for the
second half of Sunday. This will allow for much more favorable
conditions for recreational boating.
