.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure briefly provides clearing and quiet conditions
through this afternoon. An approaching low pressure will bring
snow and a wintry mix tonight into Saturday, with more
significant weather impacts favored north of I-90. Very
unsettled pattern sets up for next week. Temperatures will run
above normal Monday and Tuesday, before more seasonable
temperatures return. Another chance for a wintry mix Wednesday
night into Thursday, gives way to much colder conditions to end
the work week. A second chance for wintry precipitation should
develop sometime next weekend.

Still looking for a relatively quiet day weather-wise.
Increasing clouds ahead an approaching low pressure later today.
Gusty NW winds this morning expected to diminish, then become N
through the day. Should be slightly colder today than Thursday,
but still near normal for early March. Still thinking the brunt
of precipitation begins after the evening commute across
southern New England.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
Highlights...

* Significant snowfall possible north of the Mass Pike tonight
  into Saturday, with snow and sleet transitioning to rain near
  the coast

Precipitation...

Deja vu from earlier this week, but not exactly. As has been
previously discussed, a deamplifying mid level shortwave is
expected to generate a secondary coastal low pressure late
tonight into Saturday. This secondary low pressure should track
near the south coast of New England Saturday.

The challenge remains temperatures, and their impact on
precipitation type. Snowfall is most likely tonight, with
increasingly less favorable conditions during the day Saturday.

Latest suite has come into better agreement on the thermal
profile, but still far from perfect. Overall, temperatures will
marginally support snowfall at night. Once the sun starts
working on heating Saturday, snowfall production should go way
down, especially across northern CT, much of RI and SE MA.
Expecting snow at the onset of precipitation this evening, which
then transitions to a mix of snow and sleet south of the Mass
Pike after midnight. Warmer air continues to stream north,
leading to a wintry mix even across the higher terrain Saturday,
with rain expected towards the coasts. The best chance for all
snow will be across far northern MA, along and north of the
Route 2 corridor.

In addition to the marginal temperatures, the dendritic growth
zone should be drying out from south to north during the day
Saturday. Favored snow ratios less than 10:1 at elevations
generally less than 500 feet.

Widespread precipitation should diminish from SW to NE during
the day Saturday. Depending on the exact timing, it is possible
for it to end as a period of light snow.

Wind...

Fairly robust easterly low level jet develops late tonight into
Saturday and will bring strong wind gusts to E coastal MA and
Cape/Islands.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights

* Quiet seasonable weather on Sunday will be followed by a
  similar day Monday, but with gusty northwest winds

* Weak low pressure may support rain/snow showers late Monday
  night into Tuesday. No substantial accumulations expected

* Northwest flow supports dry weather and near to slightly below
  normal temperatures during the day and night through the end
  of next week

Saturday night through Monday

A few snow showers may linger along the east coast before
midnight Saturday as a coastal low pressure system moves into
the Canadian maritimes. Weak high pressure builds over the
region on Sunday and supports a seasonable day with a mix of sun
and clouds and highs in the upper 30s to low 40s.

By Sunday night, the area of low-pressure over The Atlantic runs
into a blocking pattern near Greenland and results in a broad
cyclonic flow that will support a prolonged period of northwest
flow over The Northeast. As a mid-level ridge over the Midwest
builds east Sunday night, the surface pressure gradient over The
Northeast strengthens and begins to support gusty northwest
winds over southern New England. This will lead to a dry sunny
day on Monday with seasonable temperatures. However, northwest
wind gusts from 20 to 30 mph on Monday will make for a
cold/blustery day.

Tuesday

Recent model guidance has suggested that a progressive shortwave
will traverse over The Great Lakes and through the Northeast
late Monday night into Tuesday. This would bring an end to the
gusty northwest winds from Monday as the associated area of
surface low-pressure simply gets absorbed by the broader
cyclonic flow over The Atlantic. This system will bring with
it measurable precipitation and the potential for some snow
showers. Model guidance has been bearish on QPF amounts which
have generally come in around a tenth of an inch when consulting
global ensemble means. If the ensemble mean forecast comes to
fruition, that would mean any areas that experience snow would
be limited to accumulations ranging from a dusting to an inch.
Of course at this time range there remains uncertainty, but this
does not appear to be a system that will bring with it any
significant impacts.

Wednesday and Thursday

Persistent northwest flow continues Wednesday and Thursday. This
will support seasonable overnight lows/daytime highs ranging
from the mid 20s to low 30s and upper 30s to low 40s respectively.
There is considerable spread beyond Thursday, but the ECMWF is
resolving a robust low pressure over The Northeast at the end of
the week while the GFS resolves quiet weather. Stay tuned as
more details become available by late weekend/early next week.

.AVIATION /07Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Today...High Confidence.

VFR. North winds shift to east by mid afternoon.

Tonight and Saturday...High confidence in trends. Moderate
confidence in the timing details, especially for precipitation
types.

VFR to start, then becoming IFR tonight, and continuing into
Saturday. Some improvement to MVFR from SW to NE during the
afternoon.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence on trends, lower confidence on
timing. VFR through the period until very late in the TAF.
MVFR/-SN develops after 03Z Saturday morning.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence on trends, lower on timing. VFR
through much of today. -SN and MVFR cigs to develop late in the
30 hour period, generally after 00Z Saturday.

Saturday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Strong
winds with local gusts up to 40 kt. Slight chance SN.

Sunday: VFR. Breezy.

Sunday Night through Monday: VFR. Windy with local gusts up to
30 kt.

Monday Night: VFR. Breezy. Slight chance SN.

Tuesday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Breezy. Chance
RA, chance SN.
