Issued at 1146 PM CST Thu Mar 9 2023 Some light snow/flurries continue to hang around across much of central North Dakota under stratus. This activity may linger for a few more hours. We did decide to go ahead and let the Winter Weather Advisory expire on time across the southeast with light snow continuing to diminish. UPDATE Issued at 909 PM CST Thu Mar 9 2023 Main update was to drop southwest and parts of south central North Dakota from the Winter Weather Advisory. Light snow or flurries are still falling in some of these areas, but visibility has improved and little to no additional snow accumulation is expected. Made slight adjustments to PoPs to account for the latest radar trends. UPDATE Issued at 553 PM CST Thu Mar 9 2023 Light snow continues falling over most of the forecast area, although visibility generally remains at a mile or greater. Opted to leave headlines as is for now, although anticipate there is a good chance portions of the Winter Weather Advisory in the southwest and possibly south central will be able to end early for the next update. && .SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Friday Afternoon) Issued at 336 PM CST Thu Mar 9 2023 Light snow driven by DCVA within a mid level deformation zone and some modest warm air advection continues across southern North Dakota this afternoon. The northward progress of the snow has been greatly impeded by strong surface high pressure over Canada feeding dry air above the boundary layer into the region, but flurries and some fog/freezing mist are still occurring from the low level moisture trapped within the boundary layer. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of southern North Dakota through this evening, but conditions are already improving in the southwest. The light snow and flurries should taper off from west to east overnight, but the low stratus is not likely to go anywhere. By Friday morning, the strong low pressure system that will be impacting the region this weekend will be landing on the Pacific Northwest coast. The downstream mass response and a leading piece of shortwave energy could generate light snow across parts of western and central North Dakota as early as Friday afternoon. If this snow develops, it should be much lighter than what is to come. Southeast winds will also begin to strengthen in western North Dakota Friday afternoon. Below normal temperatures continue, with lows tonight in the upper single digits and teens above zero and highs on Friday around 25 to 30. .LONG TERM...(Friday Evening through Thursday) Issued at 336 PM CST Thu Mar 9 2023 A Winter Storm Watch for heavy snow and blizzard conditions is in effect for most of northwest, central, and all of eastern North Dakota Friday evening through early Sunday morning. Models and ensembles are very consistent with snow rapidly increasing across northwest and central North Dakota Friday evening into Friday night as the closed upper low ejects off the North Rockies. Intense synoptic scale forcing from Q-vector convergence, isentropic ascent, and warm air advection combined with mid level frontogenesis are likely to drive snow rates greater than one inch per hour in a NW-SE oriented band moving from west to east across the state late Friday evening into Saturday morning. The 12 UTC HREF confirms the likelihood of intense snow rates, with ensemble mean values well over an inch per hour. Residence time of these rates will be crucial to total snow accumulations. The expected track of the low brings the longest residence times of heavy snow along and immediately south of the Canadian border, arching to the south and east into the Devils Lake Basin and James River Valley. Areas to the south and west could still see a period of heavier snow Friday night, especially in south central North Dakota. But the shorter duration there should help limit snow totals. The HREF and all global ensemble systems project high confidence in the corridor of maximum QPF exceeding 0.5", but remaining below one inch, and are very consistent spatially in placing the highest probabilities over the aforementioned areas of the longest duration for heavy snow. Forecast snow ratios in the 10:1 to 15:1 range yields a widespread snow accumulation forecast around 6 to 12 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Very strong dynamics with this system will create wind concerns in both the WAA/southeast flow and CAA/westerly flow regimes. An intense low level jet in excess of 50 kts is forecast to be co- located with the band of heavy snow. This setup at this time of day is highly unfavorable for momentum transfer, even in the presence of precipitation. Additionally, the current version of the NBM has been shown to have a high wind bias in these scenarios. But even the 10th percentile of NBM guidance maintains sustained speeds near 40 mph and gusts near 60 mph underneath the LLJ. We kept our wind forecast slightly underneath that, but it is harder to go much lower when multiple data sets, including the ECMWF EFI and deterministic wind gust simulations in high-resolution models, point toward southeast surface winds approaching, if not exceeding these magnitudes. Our wind forecast of sustained speeds around 30 mph and gusts as high as 55 mph in the presence of snow rates greater than one inch per hour would be a dangerous combination for travel impacts. A second round of strong winds is possible with the arrival of cold air advection and strong pressure rises in western (more southwest than northwest) North Dakota later Friday night. The intense pressure rises are forecast to taper off into central North Dakota Saturday morning, but persistent cold air advection with downward vertical motion seems likely to maintain windy conditions through much of Saturday and possibly into Saturday night, which could result in surface gusts around 40 to 50 mph. The strongest gusts in the CAA/westerly flow regime are favored over southwest North Dakota, where there should be little to no blowable snow. But the strong winds are likely to prolong blowing snow impacts after the heaviest snow ends, especially where amounts are greatest. Additional lighter snow accumulations are also possible across northern North Dakota during the day Saturday in the wrap-around flow, which could be convectively enhanced by diurnal heating. The initial surge of cold air late Friday night/early Saturday morning could also produce some convective precipitation with mixed phase from southwest into south central North Dakota, but this potential is of much lesser concern at this time. Logan and McIntosh Counties were added to the Winter Storm Watch that was issued this morning due to increased confidence in blowing snow impacts. It is important to note that most locations may experience two separate rounds of impactful winter weather, with a break Saturday morning into the early afternoon in the presence of dry slotting and a transition from the southeast to westerly winds. The greatest uncertainty with this event at this time is the severity of blowing snow impacts and areal extent thereof. High impacts appear likely for at least portions, if not much of northern and eastern North Dakota. Sunday could be very cold in the wake of the departing low, and winds could remain breezy in the eastern half of the state. An active pattern looks to continue next week, with temperatures possibly trending a bit warmer. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday Night) Issued at 1146 PM CST Thu Mar 9 2023 Light snow or flurries continues falling at some of the terminals, although visibility has increased to MVFR or VFR levels. Ceilings are presently MVFR at all sites, although are expected to drop to IFR levels over the next few hours with KJMS possibly dropping to LIFR levels late tonight. The next winter weather system is expected to move into the area from west to east Friday. Very windy conditions out of the southeast are expected, along with light to moderate snowfall towards the end of the period.
