Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 152 PM AKST Sun Feb 19 2023 .SYNOPSIS...A weak lingering front draped through the interior will continue to be the focus for clouds and generally light snow showers tonight and early Monday. Snow chances will increase Monday morning for the West Coast and Western Interior as weak disturbance moves inland near the Seward Peninsula. The first of two stronger systems arrive Tuesday morning, bringing wind, heavy snow and warming temperatures across the west into midweek. Another storm arrives midweek driving the heavy snow and warmer temperatures deeper into the Interior. Significant precipitation is expected throughout the West Coast, Western Interior and Interior. Little change for the Arctic as most of the impacts will remain south of the North Slope. && .DISCUSSION... At the surface a 989mb is located over the Bering Sea. A weak front extends eastward through the southern end of Norton Sound into the Interior of Alaska. A weak 1018mb low over the Arctic Coast has been lingering over the last several days should begin to fill as it drifts northeastward away from the coast. Aloft, we're looking at primarily zonal flow through the state, with weak little ripples bringing the light snow around the interior. A deeper wave of low pressure exists south of the western Aleutians. This wave will lift quickly northeast arriving near the YK Delta Monday. Behind that exists the two larger weather makers that will move through the Bering Sea this week. Overall model guidance seems to have initialized well and handling the early evolution of these next few systems nicely. The deterministic EC is a little slower lifting the low north of the Arctic Monday and a little more amplified with the ridge/trough pattern through the Aleutians late Monday, when compared to the GFS. While these rather subtle differences exist, the Ensembles are quite in line with each other and have been relied on heavily. Additional items to note with the upcoming winter storms, the EC Extreme Forecast Index registering 0.7 to 0.8 EFI for wind gusts along the West Coast Tuesday through Thursday indicating an unusually strong coastal wind event. Additionally, the QPF/Snow EFI coming in above 0.9 for portions of the Western Interior Wednesday and then through the Interior Thursday which provides a little more context to the unusually heavy snow event predicted midweek. North Slope and Brooks Range... Broad weak circulation evident in the stratus on satellite across the Arctic Coast and Arctic Plain this afternoon. With the surface low poised to stay largely in place over the next 24 hours we're not expecting much improvement to sky conditions. Anywhere we see the stratus holding firmly, we can also expect light snow or flurries to continue. Winds are generally pretty light across the North Slope with off shore flow east of Utqiagvik. To the west, cold northerly flow continues, but has weakened to the point where Wind Chill Advisories could be dropped for the Chukchi Sea Coast. Low temperatures tonight will be cold, teens to 20 below for most of the Brooks Range and 20s to low 30s below through the Arctic Plain and along the Coast. Colder lows are expected Monday night. Highs on Monday will be in the single digits above and below for the Brooks Range, teens below for the Arctic Plain and Coast. We'll start to see warming temperatures beyond Monday as warm West Coast storms surge warmer air northward. West Coast and Western Interior... Cloudy and showers of light snow is expected to continue from the Norton Sound inland from north of McGrath to Galena tonight. Accumulations generally less than an inch expected. Another wave will push into the West Coast tonight bringing additional light snow through the YK Delta north beyond Nome to Wales for Monday. This will surge slightly warmer temperatures northward and disrupt the ongoing cold northerly winds through the Bering Strait. In the meantime, have chosen to extend the Wind Chill Advisory for the Bering Strait Coast until Monday morning as conditions should remain persistently cold until then. Beyond Monday weather will deteriorate as two potent storms approach the area. We'll begin to see winds really increase along the lower Yukon Delta into Tuesday morning. Snow and wind will bring impacts to the West Coast Tuesday. There are some questions as to how heavy and wet the snow may be with temperatures warming and it's resulting impacts on visibility with blowing snow. Temperatures tonight will already be on the rise across the lower Yukon Delta. Lows will be in the teens above. Along the Seward Peninsula lows will range from around 10 below to about 10 above near Nome. Highs Monday will surge further from mid 20s above in the YK Delta to teens above near Nome. Even inland locations from McGrath to Huslia could see teens above. Central and Eastern Interior... Mostly cloudy conditions will continue across the Interior tonight, although some pockets of clearing are possible. Another weak wave will pass along the splayed out boundary through the Interior tonight bringing additional light snow to the Tanana Valley early Monday morning. The next, slightly deeper disturbance will pass through the Interior Monday night, bringing additional light snow and cloudiness from Bettles south to the Alaska Range and then east into Fairbanks and up the Tanana Valley. Ridging will then build in very briefly Tuesday ahead of the vigorous winter storm pushing inland along the West Coast. Significant accumulating snow is still expected for the Interior from Wednesday through Friday morning. Lows tonight will likely depend on extent and coverage of clouds, but will generally be in the single digits above to near 20 below in the Yukon Flats. Highs Monday will likely be above today's readings as warmer air begins to surge northward. Expect teens above from the Alaska Range through the Tanana Valley, single digits above to below for the White Mountains north to the Yukon Flats. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Strong south to southwest winds and a fairly long fetch will bring significant wave action to the ice edge breaking it up. Surge may push water up on to the ice along the outer coast, south of the Bering Strait, and through cracks in the ice. Extended Forecast for Days 4 to 7... A potent winter storm will bring heavy snow, wind and warmer temperatures across the West Coast into the Interior Wednesday. Strong southwesterly flow will push snow from along the middle Yukon into the Tanana Valley including Fairbanks Wednesday night. Snow rates through the Interior will increase Thursday with significant accumulations expected. Snow will be tapering to flurries for many Friday and into the weekend.
