Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

With the jet stream remaining far to the south in the North
Pacific Ocean, the weather has been fairly quiet for Southern
Alaska and the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands. Multiple weaker lows
are visible on Nighttime Microphysics satellite imagery in the
Bering Sea, with one near Kamchatka Peninsula, one moving just
north of the Western Aleutians, and one near St. Matthew Island.
The low near the Western Aleutians is bringing cold air and
stronger winds along its back side, with declining temperatures
and winds gusting over 40 kt at Shemya. Meanwhile, a front
extending from the St. Matthew Island low is pushing into
Southwest Alaska. The Bethel radar shows precipitation just
starting to move in, with Mekoryuk being the first to detect snow
with this front.

A weak Gulf low and a transiting shortwave are also bringing
precipitation to Southcentral, as evidenced by a broad coverage of
higher radar reflectivities along the north Gulf coast and from
the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula all the way north to
Susitna Valley. Light snow has been quite persistent along Cook
Inlet through the overnight hours, leading to a total of 2.3
inches here at the Anchorage forecast office as of 3 AM. For
Middleton Island and Cordova, warmer temperatures are keeping
precipitation as rain.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Synoptic scale model agreement remains decent through Saturday,
with minor differences in the placement of weak upper level
shortwaves and surface lows. The primary impact of these minor
model differences will be on precipitation timing and amounts in
Southern Alaska, and the potential for localized higher winds in
the Bering Sea and Aleutians.

At the tail end of the short-term period, models look to be
slowly locking in on the path of a strong low moving into Alaska
from the North Pacific. There is good model consensus in the
strength of this low (minimum pressure in the high 950s to low
960s) and its high moisture content. However, whether the low
moves north into Bristol Bay or continues east into Prince William
Sound remains uncertain and will have a major influence on where
the strongest winds and heaviest precipitation are expected.

.AVIATION...
PANC...IFR to LIFR visibilities should improve to MVFR as snow is
expected to taper off this afternoon. There is the potential for
freezing drizzle this evening through tomorrow morning, though
confidence is low. More light snow is expected later on Friday.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Today through Saturday)...

Light snow will continue across Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valleys
this morning as an upper level shortwave trough moves across the
area. As this shortwave moves east this afternoon snow will taper
off across Anchorage, but areas from Eagle River to Palmer and
possibly Wasilla will see light snow linger through the afternoon
and perhaps the evening hours. However, snow amounts will
generally be an inch or less, but locally 2 to 3 inches is
possible especially in upslope prone areas near the Talkeetnas.
Meanwhile a surface low near Prince William Sound will keep snow
going across that area through tonight with up to 6 inches
possible near Whittier and Valdez. Tonight a weak shortwave will
move across the area which will produce periods of very light snow
or flurries from near Anchorage to the Matanuska Valley and
Talkeetnas, but a half inch or less of snow is expected. Friday
another shortwave trough will approach the area with another shot
of light snow from the Kenai Peninsula northward towards Anchorage
and the Mat-Su valleys with perhaps up to an inch of snowfall
possible. A couple of other shortwaves will move across the area
Friday night and Saturday with continued chances of light snow,
but overall minimal snow accumulations expected. Finally, the
Copper River Basin will see periods of light snow over the next
couple of days with the an inch or two of snowfall through
Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today and
Friday)...

A front tracking across the eastern Bering Sea will bring light
snow over the Southwest mainland this afternoon and evening.
Snowfall amount of 1-2 inches will be along the immediate coast,
with lesser amounts expected for the rest of the regions. As the
front weakens tonight, moist onshore flow coupled with weak
shortwaves will maintain a chance of snow over Bristol Bay, while
the rest of mainland should remain dry by the end of the week. A
cyclonic pattern over the western Bering Sea meanwhile sends a
series of storm systems approaching the Alaska Peninsula. This
will lead to mix precipitation and winds over the region between
Friday and Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2: Today
and Friday)...

A front ahead of a low pressure system continues to push
eastward, bringing precipitation and small craft winds across the
eastern Aleutians. Precipitation will slowly taper off with
subsiding winds as the front shifts east towards Southwest Alaska.
Another low pressure system meanwhile is crossing the western and
central Aleutians, with precipitation and gales persisting today.
Winds are expected to subside with decreasing precipitation as
the low exits to the North Pacific on Friday. For the rest of the
week, a broad upper level trough sets up over the western Bering
Sea. This will lead multiple low centers rotating and ejecting
from the trough, bringing unsettled conditions along the Aleutian
Chain.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through Tuesday)...

There is high confidence that the unsettled and active pattern
looks to continue for both domains through the long-term period.
The deterministic GFS and Canadian guidance, as well as their
respective ensemble suites keep the Gulf of Alaska active as the
area remains in the upper trough. Overall, guidance is having a
hard time locking on to individual shortwaves, their strength, and
track, throughout the long-term since there are very few
consolidated systems. However, is some agreement between
deterministic and ensemble guidance in potentially trying to bring
a more concentric upper-level low from the North Pacific and into
the Gulf through Monday and potentially tracking it to near
Prince William Sound and the eastern Kenai Peninsula. The surface
feature associated with this could be at least gale-force, if not
storm-force. However, guidance does agree on a weakening trend as
the low tracks further northward in the Gulf. The GFS and
Canadian guidance are the most aggressive with this system in the
upper levels and lower levels, while the ECMWF depicts more of a
weaker open wave/trough that is negatively tilted. Overall for
Southcentral, there is higher confidence that most precipitation
will fall for coastal areas of the Eastern Kenai Peninsula, Prince
William Sound communities, as well as the northern Gulf Coast.
There is more uncertainty with how the active pattern will impact
the Western Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valleys, and
the Copper River Basin due to potential cross-barrier/downslope
flow associated with the frontal systems. More details will
eventually be revealed as more data is ingested and guidance gets
a better handle on the ultimate evolution of systems within the
very progressive flow.

Out west, both Southwest Alaska, the Bering Sea, as well as the
Aleutian Chain will remain entrenched in the overall upper trough
pattern. The upper pattern, like the east domain, is chaotic with
numerous shortwaves rotating and ejecting from a broad upper
trough that extends from Siberia, through the Bering Sea, and
across the Aleutian Chain to the North Pacific. While
deterministic and ensemble guidance all show different
solutions/evolutions of surface features with confidence remaining
low with them throughout the long-term, confidence is somewhat
average to even a little above average that the most active areas,
both precipitation-wise and wind-wise, will be on the North
Pacific side of the Aleutian Chain as well as the Alaska
Peninsula.
