Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 803 PM PDT Sat Apr 9 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Gusty west-southwest winds expected this afternoon as temperatures well above seasonal normals continue for the Mojave Desert. A strong weather system will drop through the region on Monday, bringing with it widespread gusty winds, a drop in temperatures, and high elevation precipitation chances. Temperatures will bottom out on Tuesday before slowly climbing back to normal through the week. && .UPDATE...The Wind Advisory across the western Mojave Desert and the AZ Strip were allowed to expire on time, at 7pm PST. Lingering southwest gusts around 30-35 are possible in those areas through 10pm this evening. Elsewhere, winds have also begun to decay this evening with breezy northwest winds across south- central NV associated with the cold front passage. The cold front will continue to push through the region into tonight bringing cooler, seasonal temperatures Sunday. Also some breezy north winds will develop through Sunday morning, especially down the Lower Colorado River Valley. An even more potent weather system will be on the current shortwave's heels, impacting us Monday into Tuesday. The main impacts with the next system will be primarily wind, so be sure to secure any loose items Sunday. No forecast updates were needed this evening. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued at 117 PM PDT Sat Apr 9 2022/ .DISCUSSION...Today through next Saturday. Today, a trough pushing through the Pacific Northwest will move south across the Great Basin, increasing southwesterly winds across our forecast area this afternoon. Wind Advisories are in effect for the western Mojave Deserts in San Bernardino County as well as northern Mohave County until 7pm PDT where wind gusts as high as 40 mph are possible. Due to residual ridging combined with mixing from the gusty winds, above average temperatures will persist for the Mojave Desert, with highs in the 90s for the lower elevations. A cold front associated with the aforementioned trough will push through the region tonight, dropping temperatures, and resulting in about a 15 degree drop between Saturday and Sunday's highs. The pattern change continues into next week. Monday, a potent weather system will drop through the region, resulting in strong, gusty southwest winds, a further drop in temperatures, and chances for high elevation precipitation. There remains a bit of uncertainty in the details, but our wind gust forecast has noticeably increased with the addition of some high resolution model data. The areas currently under a High Wind Watch include northern San Bernardino County and western Inyo County in California, southern Clark County in Nevada, and Mohave County in Arizona. The highest signal for warning-level winds continues to highlight these regions, so the watch looks to be in good shape, and no changes were made. Over the next couple of shifts, we will make the decision to upgrade the watch to either a High Wind Warning or a Wind Advisory. It is worth noting, however, that the remainder of the forecast area not currently underneath a wind-related headline will also experience gusty southwest winds on Monday. A couple of zones will need further interrogation including eastern Inyo County and northern Clark County, as these areas continue to show increased potential for wind gusts over 50 mph. Otherwise, much of the remaining area will likely require a Wind Advisory. Dangerous crosswinds are expected on area thoroughfares, particularly along Highway 395 south of Bishop as gusty west winds work their way downslope the eastern Sierra. Winds will be more southerly over southern Mohave County, which would impact Highway 40 east of Needles. Winds on Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, and Lake Havasu will range from 2 to 3 feet, making it dangerous to operate small craft. Additionally, patchy blowing dust could reduce visibilities on roadways at times. While precipitation chances still look limited with this system, a few rain showers will be possible over the higher elevations of the southern Great Basin Monday evening into Tuesday afternoon. There is also the chance of light snow accumulations in the Sierra and higher elevations of southern Nevada as the low exits the region Tuesday. Additionally, there is a slight chance of the lower elevations of the northern Owens Valley receiving measurable snowfall, though confidence is low. Any snow that falls will remain below Winter Weather Advisory. Beyond mid-week, there is some disagreement in the long-term guidance. The ECMWF is showing a broad ridge developing over the southwest, while the GFS shows the potential for another low pressure system to affect the area next weekend. Regardless of which solution comes to fruition, temperatures should rebound back to near- normal levels by the end of the week. && .FIRE WEATHER...Afternoon relative humidities will be in the single digits through the weekend, with overnight recoveries in the teens for much of the Mojave Desert. Elevated fire danger this afternoon due to wind speeds approaching thresholds in the western Mojave Desert and northern Mohave County, but are not expected to persist for more than a couple of hours. Elevated fire danger returns on Monday with strong, gusty winds expected, though as the winds increase through the day, relative humidities will increase as well, helping to alleviate fire weather concerns. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Breezy southwesterly winds will persist through this evening with gusts to 25 knots. Winds will gradually shift to northerly directions late tonight, after around 6z, and remain breezy out of the north through early afternoon tomorrow with gusts to near 20 knots. Winds will ease tomorrow evening with more typical diurnal trends resuming. Skies will be partly cloudy with periodic high clouds through the period.
