Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 422 AM MDT Sat Mar 19 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Dry and mild southwesterly flow will prevail across the region today. A Pacific storm system will cross the area Sunday. High pressure will follow for much of next week. && .SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Monday)...A mid level ridge axis extends across the forecast area early this morning, downstream from a shortwave trough making landfall along the Pacific Northwest coast. An extensive plume of mid and high level moisture upstream from this ridge axis encompasses much of the Great Basin/interior Pacific Northwest. As the ridge axis translates east this morning, this plume of moisture will overspread the forecast area, resulting in filtered sunshine through much of the day. This may knock a couple of degrees off max temps this afternoon, however with increasing southwesterly flow allowing for fairly deep mixing, most valleys will run 5-8 degrees above climo as they warm into the low to mid 60s. A tightening pressure gradient coupled with mixing higher momentum aloft down to the surface will result in breezy to windy conditions across the western valleys this afternoon. These winds will likely remain gusty through much of the night as the upstream trough approaches, which will keep min temps elevated across the forecast area. The upstream trough will be splitting as it translates inland and across the Interior West later tonight through Sunday, as the associated cold front crosses northern Utah during the morning hours. The northern portion of this split will cross northern Utah late Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon, enhancing low-mid level frontogenesis along the passing baroclinic zone and supporting a band of snowfall along this boundary. Snow levels will quickly fall to the valley floors in the wake of the surface front, where 1 to 3 inches of accumulation looks likely. Given the warm surface temps and mid March sun angle, this accumulation will largely remain confined to grassy and elevated surfaces. Higher elevations of northern and central Utah are looking at 4 to 8 inches of snow through Sunday evening, with locally higher amounts possible in the upper Cottonwoods. Post frontal winds will be a concern not just across the Great Salt Lake Desert, where a Wind Advisory is in effect for much of Sunday, but also across downslope favored areas such as northern Utah County and Castle Country Sunday afternoon. Winds across these areas may reach Advisory criteria as well, and may also need headlines as the event approaches. .LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Monday)....A trough axis will be shifting east to start the period. In its wake will be temperatures across the entire CWA that are ~10 degrees below average and strong northerly winds across southern Utah. A ridge will build into the region by midweek and persist through the remainder of the period, however it could be flattened slightly by a shortwave passing to the north on Thursday that could cool temperatures slightly aloft and increase cloud cover. All in all, precipitation chances across the CWA will be very low after the Sunday storm pushes east. As the trough axis slides through the area its eastward progression will slow over the southern plains. Given a strong surface pressure gradient in place with the high amplitude ridge building to the west and the deep positively tilted trough to the east gusty northerly winds, especially across southern Utah, will persist for a prolonged period. The strongest winds will occur Monday morning and gradually weaken through Wednesday. By late Wednesday/early Thursday the ridge axis will be centered over the CWA. This will result in temperatures warming throughout the week with mid-to-upper 60s for most valley locations with 80s near St. George by Thursday and persisting through the weekend. A shortwave may act to slightly flatten the ridge on Thursday, but this will only result in some increased cloud cover. AVIATION...KSLC...VFR conditions will persist over the KSLC terminal throughout the period. Clouds are beginning to filter in from the west ahead of a storm for Sunday morning. These clouds will generally remain scattered to broken above 10kft so mountain obscuration won't be a concern. As the day progresses southerly winds will increase and become gusty this afternoon with gusts 25- 30kts. REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions will prevail throughout the period for all terminals. Clouds will filter into the region from west to east ahead of a Sunday storm. CIGs will generally remain above 10kft so mountain obscuration won't be a concern.
