.SYNOPSIS...
A warm Santa Ana wind pattern will continue through the weekend
with high temperatures for the coast and valleys mostly in the
80s and a few 90s, at least 20 degrees above normal for this time
of the year. There will be periods of strong and gusty
northeasterly Santa Ana winds into Thursday, then weaker easterly
Santa Ana winds by Friday night into Saturday. Onshore flow will
return Monday, with a large low pressure system from the north,
which will bring much cooler weather on Tuesday with a slight
chance for showers.

.Evening Update...
Santa Ana winds have been gusty today, with peak winds gusts over
60 mph in some spots since this morning. The stronger offshore
flow pattern will continue through the day on Thursday as the
dominant ridge tracks over the region. This will also lead to
another day of warm temperatures with highs in the 80s into the
low 90s for many areas west of the mountains. As seen today, we
may break a few record daily high temperatures again tomorrow! The
winds will begin to ease Thursday night into Friday as trough
around the ridge weakens to the south. This will help provide a
bit stronger onshore flow and provide a bit cooler temperatures
for coastal locations.
Warm temperatures region wide will continue into the weekend as
the ridge sinks further south into California. A trough is
expected to pave its way down the West Coast by Monday. This will
create a day of transition, where increased onshore flow is
expected with cooler temperatures. Model consensus is coming into
better agreement of this trough coming into Southern California by
Tuesday, which would bring much cooler temperatures and even a
chance for light showers. Confidence still remains low, but we
will continue to assess this change in the weather pattern as the
event gets closer.

The Santa Ana event that we have been tracking is becoming
underway as the offshore pressure gradients remain consistently
around 12 mb from the Great Basin to the SoCal Coast. Conditions
will be similar on Thursday except the Santa Ana winds will be
quite strong from tonight through Thursday morning.
Temperatures will be slightly less warm on Friday, as the
offshore flow is expected to weaken a bit. On Saturday and into
Sunday, the offshore flow will increase again, as the surface high
over the Great Basin is expected to strengthen to near 1040 mb.
Also the upper high, although not as strong, will be shifting to
the southeast, closer to our area. The heat advisory remains in
effect through Sunday due to the anomalously warm conditions
around 20 degrees above normal for this time of the year.
The forecast will finally shift for early next week as the upper
level ridge breaks and shifts southeast of SoCal. A fast moving
upper level trough will drop from the Pacific Northwest on Sunday,
SSE towards Central California on Monday and into the Sonoran
Desert by Tuesday. Some of the ensemble members are showing the
potential for a decent rain event for portions of SoCal, but
forecaster confidence remains on the low side. For now we have
continued to mention a chance of light showers, per the national
blend of models, but will be keeping an eye on this interesting
forecast, and welcome break from the abnormally very warm and dry
weather that our region has been experiencing. At any rate, the
low pressure trough will shift the pattern to favor more onshore
flow and much cooler, closer to normal temperatures for this time
of year. Moderating temperatures are then likely for mid to late
next week as some upper level ridging works across the Eastern
Pacific.

through tonight.
Gusty northeast winds in the foothills and adjacent valleys will
strengthen Thursday morning. Winds 20-25 kt with gusts 30-40 kt can
be expected, localized gusts up to 50 kt over south and west facing
slopes and foothills as well as near mountain passes. LLWS and
moderate to strong up/downdrafts can be expected at times over areas
south and west of the mountains through Thursday morning.

.MARINE...
Northeast winds over the far northern coastal waters will strengthen
slightly as Santa Ana winds increase Thursday morning. A few gusts
around 20 kts are possible over the waters, mainly near Oceanside
and Camp Pendleton. Otherwise, no hazardous marine conditions are
expected through Sunday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Offshore flow with well above average high temperatures will
continue through the weekend with lowest daytime humidity for
inland areas in the single digits RH. There will be periods of
strong gusty northeasterly Santa Ana winds into Thursday along and
below the coastal slopes of the mountains with the stronger winds
for late tonight into Thursday morning. Winds in the windier
locations will gust to 60 mph this evening through Thursday
morning. A round of weaker easterly winds is expected Friday night
into Saturday.
Onshore flow will return on Monday in advance of a low pressure
system moving southward through the western states. This will
begin to spread cooling and higher coastal humidity inland. The
greatest cooling and humidity recovery is expected Tuesday.
