Currently...quiet conditions continue to prevail across souther
Colorado with clear skies and light winds. Temperatures are cold
this morning, with teens and 20 across the Plains, and near zero
readings over the San Luis Valley.
Today...high pressure across the region will flatten as energy moves
out of the Pacific Northwest and across Wyoming. This will spread
mid and high level cloud cover across the region by this afternoon.
Flow aloft will increase out of the west, and mixing will lead to
spotty critical fire weather conditions for this afternoon. Fremont,
Pueblo, Huerfano and Baca Counties will see the most humidity values
drop below 15 percent this afternoon, and winds gusting at times to
near 25 mph. Elsewhere, humidity values will be low, but winds will
be light. Temperatures this afternoon will be quite nice, with 60s
across the Plains, and 40s over the San Luis Valley.
Tonight...the energy passing to the north will send a cold front
south across the Plains this evening. Winds will shift northerly
behind the front, with breezy conditions out near the Kansas border.
Wind, cloud cover will help keep overnight lows in the 20s on the
Plains. Single digit readings are expected over the San Luis
Valley. Precipitation does not look to arrive until Tuesday
morning, so have the overnight period dry at this time. Mozley

...HIGH IMPACT WINTER WEATHER SYSTEM TO AFFECT THE REGION TUESDAY
INTO THURSDAY...
A high impact winter weather system will affect the region during
the beginning of this time period. Cooler air will have already
begun to filter into the region at the beginning of this time
period. Snow will begin in the mtns by late morning or early
afternoon and will progress steadily east, reaching the I-25
corridor by early evening. Snow will then increase over the plains
and become steady through Tuesday night into all day Wednesday. Snow
will begin to decrease Wednesday evening.
As for temperatures, it will be rather cool on Tuesday, but the
really cold arctic air will arrive Tuesday evening and last into
Thursday. Due to clouds and snowfall, temperatures Wednesday morning
will be cold, but not as cold as they will be Thursday morning. I
expect many areas Thursday morning will be at or below zero F. It
may be bitterly cold in the San Luis Valley, especially if they get
fresh snow cover and skies clear.
Several things of note:
1.) Trends in the ensemble guidance have been showing more snow for
the region. d(ensemble)/dt have been increasing each run (both GEFs
and EPS), with values increasing to 0.3 to 0.5 liquid equivalent
over the plains. Using a 20:1 ration which looks reasonable, this
should bring up to 6 to 10 inches to most if not all of the plains.
2.) Dendritic growth processes look like the predominant snow
crystal growth over the plains as all the soundings show a deep
saturated layer in the -12 to -18 F range. This will allow the snow
depths to pile up if it verifies (big pretty flakes).
3.) The warm air advection appears rather impressive over the plains
Tuesday night into Wednesday, becoming a more classic upslope
pattern Wednesday evening before ending.
4.) The mid level trough is showing signs of becoming neutrally
tilted during the end of the storm period (but this may be too late
for us to benefit from this).
5.) This system will be over us for a good 24 hours or so, unlike
the "hit and run" systems we have had so far this winter.
6.) Temps in the NDFD may still need to be tweaked down several
degrees during the Tue night through Thursday time period.
For the above reasons, have introduced winter storm watches
beginning later tomorrow over most of the forecast area. Over the
plains, it appears the heavier snow will occur along the I-25
corridor, and over the far eastern plains (4-8"). Snowfall over the
Wets, Sangres and SW mtns should be in the 10-20" range, with the
San Luis valley getting 3 to 6". The central mtns and upper ark
valley will also see snow, with somewhat lesser amounts. the big
winner should be the SW mtns, with the Sangres a close second.
***THIS IS GOING TO BE A HIGH IMPACT EVENT, ESPECIALLY WEDNESDAY
MORNING*** Although winds wont be all that strong, there will
probably be enough wind Wednesday morning to make for miserable
conditions, as it will be snowing steadily over the major population
centers at this time, and the roadways will likely be snow packed by
the morning rush hour. The combination of the wind and visibility
will make for very poor driving conditions. School Districts across
the entire forecast area will be impacted significantly by this
event. Wind chill values Wednesday morning will be in the single
digits, with ambient temps in the teens.
For Thursday, main concern will be potential for very cold
temperatures Thursday morning. Temperatures will likely be at or
below zero for mins over the plains, with temps in the San Luis
Valley in the negative 10s (-10 to -20); it is not out of the
question that temps could be in the -20s in the San Luis Valley as
ensemble output shows about 30% of the members below -20F.
I should also note that the GFS is a bit slower with this system as
compared to the EC, and if this verifies the plains may see a bit
more snow (and maybe a bit warmer mins THU AM if the clouds linger).
Things should clear by Thursday, although it will be cold on this
day with max temps on in the teens and 20s.
Temps will moderate Friday into th weekend, Another week system will
move across Sat afternoon into Sunday AM. \/Hodanish

Warm westerly flow aloft today will transition to a more southwest
direction tomorrow as a broad upper level low pressure trough
pushes into the region. A cold front will push south across the
eastern plains tonight, mainly affecting KCOS and KPUB, with the
potential for some lower clouds over the Palmer Divide. There will
be a general increase in mid and high level cloudiness over the
next 24 hrs for the entire region, otherwise VFR conditions are
anticipated.
KCOS and KPUB...VFR conditions next 24 hours. Southwest winds
around 15 kts, with potentially gusts up to 25 kts, will be
possible along the I-25 corridor, especially for KPUB. Winds will
switch north to northeast overnight behind a cold front between
02z-06z. Lower stratus will be possible for KCOS after 09z.

Humidity values are expected to fall below 15 percent, with gusty winds near 25 mph over these areas. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday An arctic air mass will move into the region Monday night and will last until Friday This system will bring in unseasonably cold air, along with widespread moderate to locally heavy snowfall, across the entire region. The heaviest snow is expected to occur from late Tuesday afternoon and last into late Wednesday. The highest impacts are expected to occur all day Wednesday when the heaviest snow is expected to occur across the large population centers in southern Colorado. Travel over the entire region on Wednesday will be difficult. Over the mountains, especially the eastern mountains and southwest mountains, a foot or two of snow is expected, and travel will become difficult starting Tuesday night lasting into Thursday. The San Luis Valley may also see significant accumulations of snow. The coldest temperatures will occur Thursday morning, as temperatures are expected to drop to zero degrees fahrenheit or colder over the entire region. Special Note for the San Luis Valley: If skies clear Wednesday night and the valley floor receives fresh snow cover, very cold temperatures may occur Thursday morning, with readings 20 to 30 degrees below zero.
