.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will gradually build into the region through Tuesday
with breezy, cold, and dry conditions prevailing. With the high
pressure moving offshore early Wednesday, a warm front will lift
north through the region Wednesday night providing a brief return to
well above normal temperatures Thursday. A cold front will move
offshore late Thursday bringing showers and storms to the area. High
pressure and fair weather then return for Friday and Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A strong Arctic shortwave is rotating through the region this
afternoon, bringing much colder than average temperatures and
scattered to widespread snow shower activity. Despite very low dew
points and RH's, the extreme lift and steep lapse rates being
generated in response to the shortwave are having no problem
producing snow showers. Some heavier squalls have been occurring
also. This activity is likely to continue into early to mid evening,
with the focus gradually shifting east with time in response to the
shortwave's positioning. Gusty northwest winds will continue also,
with gusts over 30 mph and locally to around 40 mph expected,
especially within any heavier snow showers.

Overnight, a bitterly cold night is expected. Low temperatures
mainly in the upper 10s and low 20s. Snow shower activity should
mostly push offshore by mid-evening with decreasing cloud cover also
as the shortwave departs. Gusty winds will continue through the mid
to late evening, but then steadily diminish through the night,
though probably not quite to the point of decoupling in most areas.
But any locations that do turn clear and near calm could get even
colder than forecast. Record lows look mostly safe but we may be
within striking distance of a couple of them.

Tuesday looks like a much quieter but still unseasonably cool day.
The upper trough starts to shift off to the east, and gradual air
mass modification will begin. With large scale subsidence behind the
trough axis, we will not see the forcing for ascent on Tuesday that
we've seen the past several days. As a result, mostly sunny skies
are expected. High temperatures will get back into the 40s. We
remain in a northwest flow regime. Diurnal mixing will yield some
increase in winds for the later morning and afternoon hours, but not
to the extent of recent days, with gusts mainly 20 to 25 mph.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Current short term forecast looks on track per the latest model
guidance and no changes were made.

A northwesterly mid-level jet located across the region will push
offshore on Tuesday as a ridge axis moves in from the west into
early Wednesday. The mean flow the shifts to the southwest Wednesday
night as a trough axis moves across the Mississippi Valley. At the
surface, high pressure will slide offshore to our south during the
day Tuesday. Meanwhile, strong low pressure will move across the
Plains and into the upper Midwest and upper Great Lakes region
Wednesday and into Wednesday night. This will push a warm front
northward through the Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday.

Subsidence quickly diminishes Tuesday night as the ridge axis draws
closer from the west and the surface high moves offshore. Heading
into early Wednesday, the local region will be in the right entrance
region of the departing jet streak. This will also coincide with the
approach of the warm front from the south. Guidance continues to
indicate a region of light QPF associated with these features
spreading into the area from the southwest around daybreak
Wednesday. The antecedent conditions will be very dry,
especially in the low levels. It also seems more probable that
any precipitation that does reach the ground will be too light
to really be measurable (mainly flurries/sprinkles), especially
getting into the I-95 corridor and points south/east. Have
maintained low end chance to slight chance PoPs, mainly focused
during the mid to late morning hours on Wednesday. As for
precipitation types, any precipitation that reaches the ground
will likely be a wintry mix. Snow, sleet, or rain are all
possible. A brief dusting of snow or sleet is possible across
the Lehigh Valley, Berks County, and southern Poconos during the
morning before temperatures warm above freezing and
precipitation ends.

Aside from the light precipitation potential, Wednesday will be
mostly cloudy and chilly with highs mostly in the 40s thanks to
the considerable cloud cover. Temperatures should climb into
the low 50s across Delmarva with some warm surface advection
effects beginning to ramp up across the southern zones late in
the day. The warm front boundary is expected to lift north
through the forecast area overnight Wednesday with temperature
minimums likely being experienced before midnight in most
locations. The warm frontal passage may result in some areas of
fog along with low clouds. The frontal boundary should be near
or north of I-80 by daybreak Thursday.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The main focus in the long term remains the potential for severe
thunderstorms developing late Thursday. The mid-level ridge axis
will be offshore Thursday morning with deep southwesterly flow and
warm advection prevailing through late Thursday. The main shortwave
trough axis of interest appears to pass through the area Thursday
evening. As the synoptic trough wave axis passes offshore early
Friday, zonal flow will generally prevail into the weekend. At the
surface, the medium range guidance is fairly consistent at this
range pushing the main cold front associated with this system
through the area and offshore early in the night during the late
evening hours. Meanwhile, the main surface low will be nearing the
Hudson Bay, but a secondary surface low associated with the main
trough axis may develop along the cold frontal boundary. This could
have implications on our thunderstorms and/or severe thunderstorm
potential (more on that below). Broad high pressure will then build
into the central and eastern CONUS Friday and into the weekend.

With the warm front north of the forecast area early Thursday,
temperatures will climb quickly into the 60s in the expansive warm
sector with daytime highs forecast to be near 70 degrees in many
locations. Widespread cloud cover should prevent temperatures from
really spiking above forecast values, and this will preclude
temperatures from nearing record levels (near 80 degrees for most
sites). One thing we will need to investigate closer in future
updates will be the potential for strong south to southwesterly
gradient wind in the warm sector. Southwesterly 925 mb winds look to
increase to around 40 kts, so we could see some gusts getting into
the 35-45 mph range across the coastal plains of Delmarva and
southern New Jersey where boundary layer mixing is likely to be a
little more efficient. In any case, it will be a rather breezy day
with south to southwesterly winds increasing to around 15-25 mph
with gusts of at least 25-30 mph.

Showers should begin developing into the afternoon hours Thursday
with the thunderstorms activity likely hold off until late in the
day and into the evening as instability builds. The details of this
setup will be heavily influenced by the convective evolution
upstream across portions of the South and Southeast Wednesday and
Wednesday night, thus I am not going to get into the
convective/mesoscale details at this time as the uncertainty remains
high. However, if enough instability materializes, there will be
plenty of deep layer and low level effective shear and forcing to
support organized convection and severe thunderstorms. Currently the
main time frame for severe thunderstorms appears to be from about 6
PM to midnight. The showers and storm will end quickly as the front
moves offshore into the overnight.

Temperatures will fall into the 50s behind the front Thursday night
and westerly winds will prevail. Fair weather is expected through
Saturday with temperatures returning to seasonable averages and
breezy west to northwesterly winds. Expect highs in the 50s to low
60s and lows in the mid 30s to around 40 degrees. The next chance
for precipitation will arrive into Sunday. Kept with a blend of
guidance.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of this afternoon... With the 18z TAF issuance, have added a
TEMPO MVFR group for snow shower potential for this afternoon and
early evening. Snow shower coverage has been greater than expected
and additional scattered snow showers are likely through the
afternoon, including for PHL. Brief visibility reductions to MVFR
and locally IFR are possible. West-northwest wind 15 to 20 kt with
gusts to 30 kt. Some gusts to 35 kt or a little higher are possible
especially in any heavier snow showers. High confidence.

Tonight... VFR with decreasing cloud cover and any remaining snow
showers dissipating by around 03z. Northwest winds steadily
decreasing to 5 to 10 kt. High confidence.

Tuesday... VFR. Northwest winds around 10 kt with gusts to 20 kt.
High confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday...VFR/SKC. Winds northwesterly 10-15 kts with gusts up to 20
kts possible. High confidence.

Tuesday night...Ceilings increasing in coverage and lowering, but
should remain VFR through around 12Z Wednesday. Winds diminish to
around 5 kts or less and shift to the north. High confidence.

Wednesday...Ceilings continue lowering to MVFR or IFR around 15Z or
so. There is a chance of light snow, sleet, and/or rain, especially
at RDG/ABE, mainly from 12-18Z. The precipitation is expected to
remain light (if any reaches the ground) and shouldn't cause much
visibility restrictions. Winds becoming southeasterly around 5 kts.
Moderate confidence on the overall pattern.

Wednesday night...MVFR or IFR ceilings likely as a warm front lifts
through the area from the south. Some fog is possible as well.
Southeast winds around 5 kts will shift more southerly and increase
to about 5-10 kts after 06Z. LLWS possible after 06Z at ACY/MIV.
Moderate confidence overall.

Thursday...MVFR ceilings may scatter out or lift to VFR at times.
Showers and thunderstorms developing, especially after 18Z, which
will likely lower restrictions temporarily. Winds south to
southwesterly increasing to around 15-20 kts with gusts of 25-35 kts
possible. Moderate confidence.

Thursday night...Showers and thunderstorms likely through around 06Z
with prevailing MVFR to IFR conditions probable. Winds will diminish
to around 10-15 kts with gusts around 20-25 kts and shift to the
west as a cold front passes through the region overnight. Ceilings
should begin to scatter out and lift behind to front as the showers
and storms come to an end. Moderate confidence.

Friday...Prevailing VFR with scattered clouds. Winds westerly around
15 kts with gusts around 25 kts. High confidence.

Through tonight... A Gale Warning remains in effect until 1AM EDT
Tuesday. Northwest wind gusts of around 35 kt are expected. Some
higher gusts of 40 to 45 kt are possible for a couple of hours this
evening mainly near the mouth of Delaware Bay. Diminishing winds
later tonight but SCA conditions will continue. Light freezing spray
is also possible tonight especially for the Atlantic coastal waters
of New Jersey and Lower Delaware Bay. Scattered snow showers
possible. Seas 4 to 6 ft.

Tuesday... Marginal SCA conditions are possible with northwest
winds 15 to 20 kt gusting close to 25 kt. Seas 2 to 4 ft.

Outlook...

Tuesday...Lingering SCA conditions should diminish around
daybreak, then northwesterly winds around 20 kts will prevail
much of the day. The winds will gradually shift to the north and
diminish to around 10-15 kts overnight. Seas 3-4 feet.

Wednesday...SCA conditions possibly developing overnight,
especially across the southern waters. Winds becoming
southeasterly around 10-15 kts during the day will begin to
increase overnight to around 20 kts. Seas 1-2 feet Wednesday
will begin to build close to 5 feet by daybreak Thursday.

Thursday...Advisory conditions likely. Southerly winds increasing to
around 25-30 kts. Gusts up to 35 kts possible near the coast. Seas
building to 6-9 feet. Shower and thunderstorms developing into the
afternoon and evening.

Thursday night...Advisory conditions likely continuing. Southerly
winds 25-30 kts early will shift westerly and diminish to around 20
kts with gusts up to 30 kts possible as a cold front moves offshore.
Seas 5-8 feet. Showers and thunderstorms will move offshore and out
to sea overnight.

Friday...Advisory conditions likely continuing with westerly winds
around 20 kts gusting to 25 kts at times. Seas 4-6 feet.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A cold and dry airmass will be in place today. Surface dew points
drop into the single digits to as low as 5 below, and west-northwest
winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 25 to 35 mph. Minimum relative
humidity values today will range from 25 to 30 percent (a little
higher in parts of the southern Poconos). Although scattered
flurries are possible in the afternoon, measurable precip is not
expected. Snow flurries and cloud cover may locally increase the RH
this afternoon, similar to Sunday.

On Tuesday, expect northwesterly winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 25
mph, and minimum relative humidity values ranging from 20-25% for
most locations. There will be much more sunshine Tuesday compared to
today and slightly warmer temperatures in the low to mid 40s.
