Area forecast discussion, Oct 27, 3:30 AM EDT, 4 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
330 AM EDT Thu Oct 27 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build across the Great Lakes today, slide to
our north on Friday, and move more into our area over the
weekend. An area of weak low pressure will approach from the
southwest late Sunday. The low will slowly track through the
region Monday and Tuesday bringing rain chances with it. High
pressure will return on Wednesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
We'll start the day quite differently than the last couple with few
clouds and no fog or drizzle. Large high pressure near Michigan this
morning will move to New York state by tonight. A decent pressure
gradient ahead of the high has already started bringing in the
cooler and drier air to the region. This will continue today and
once the daytime mixing begins, a gusty N to NW wind will be
experienced. High temperatures today will be bit cooler than recent
days with maxs in the upper 50s/low 60s N/W and low/mid 60s for the
Philadelphia metro, Delmarva and much of NJ. Winds NW to N
increasing 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 to 25 mph at times.

Tonight... Fair weather continues. Mostly clear skies and lowering
winds. Lows will be in the 30s N/W of the fall line and in the
low/mid 40s for the S/E areas. NE winds mostly 5 to 10 mph.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Surface high pressure centered across the Northeast, coupled with
flat/amplifying upper ridging in response to a digging trough
across the central US, will provide a nice late October weekend
for our area. Forecast soundings indicate a dry atmosphere with
large scale subsidence evident. Some high clouds on Friday will
clear out by the evening as the column dries and as a result, a
mostly cloud free weekend is in store. The exception will be
areas along the coast where the persistent onshore flow may
provide enough moisture for a deck of clouds to stick around.
Winds on Friday and Saturday will be out of the northeast and
have a bit of a bite with a tight pressure gradient around the
high and a center of low pressure well offshore. Highest values
will be found mostly along the coast and Atlantic waters with
sustained 15-20 mph and gusts 25-30 mph are likely. Inland,
winds should hold at less than 10 mph. Provided winds stay down
at night, clear skies will promote efficient radiational
cooling with lows dipping down to the low 30s in spots. Highs
will gradually moderate both days with upper 50s on Friday and
low 60s on Saturday.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The long term period begins with the region remaining under the
influence of ridging aloft in response to a trough forecast to
be located over the Tennessee Valley. A closed mid-level low
will be absorbed back into the flow and the trough will de-
amplify as it moves north. As a result, the ridge will break
down as height falls occur the day on Sunday and especially on
Monday.

At the surface, high pressure centered over New England will keep us
dry, but cloudy, for most of Sunday. Despite the clouds, highs still
look to be right around, or a few ticks above, normal in the mid
60s. The high then exits the area late Sunday and gives way to
weakening low pressure approaching from the southwest. Some
variability exists among guidance in how much precipitation we see
and when, though it doesn't appear to be a very impactful system at
this time. Monday and Tuesday look to have the best chance for some
rain as the low moves through and shortwave support accompanies it.
GEFS plumes indicate a decent spread in QPF with higher values north
and west with means not exceeding about half an inch, which seems
reasonable given the dying nature of the low. NBM PQPF also
exhibits significant spread, so much uncertainty still remains
overall as guidance works to get a better handle. Kept highest
PoPs in for Monday as it looks to be the wettest day right now,
though some showers will likely linger into Tuesday.

High pressure is then forecast to build in on the backside of
the low and return dry weather by the middle part of the
workweek. In fact, ensemble guidance indicates positive 500 mb
height anomalies with the potential for above average
temperatures (upper 60s) for much of the long term period.

&&

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today... VFR expected today with few clouds after 12Z. North to
northwest winds increasing to 10 to 15 kts with gusts up to 25 kts
after 14Z/15Z. There is a chance that winds at KPHL may go around
more N/NE during the afternoon. Overall, winds diminishing after
21Z/22Z. High confid.

Tonight... VFR. Mostly SKC. Light Northeast winds. High confid.

Outlook...

Friday - Saturday...VFR. Northeasterly winds at 5-10 knots. Gusts to
20 knots possible at KACY. High confidence.

Saturday Night...Sub-VFR conditions possible with persistent
northeast flow at 5-10 knots. Gusts to 20 knots possible at
KACY. Moderate confidence.

Sunday...Sub-VFR conditions possible with persistent northeast flow
at 5-10 knots. Gusts 15-20 knots possible at KACY. Scattered showers
arriving in the evening. Moderate confidence.

Monday - Tuesday...Sub-VFR conditions remain possible with a
easterly/northeasterly flow around 5 knots. Scattered showers
throughout the day. Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Fair weather is expected on the waters today and tonight. A strong
high will build over the waters with a decent pressure gradient
ahead of the system. Winds will increase today as the cool/dry air
arrives over the area. SCA flag will go into effect for the northern
two NJ coastal zones at 20Z and for the remaining waters at 00Z. The
flags will run thru the night (at least).

Outlook...

Friday...SCA conditions expected. Northeasterly winds 15-20 knots
with gusts to 25 knots. Seas 5-7 feet.

Saturday...SCA conditions expected. Northeasterly winds 15-20 knots
with gusts to 25 knots. Seas 4-6 feet.

Sunday...SCA conditions expected. Northeasterly winds 15-20 knots.
Seas 4-6 feet.

Monday - Tuesday...SCA conditions possible. Winds and waves slowly
beginning to subside. Southeasterly winds 5-10 knots on Monday
becoming westerly on Tuesday. Seas 4-6 feet subsiding to 3-5 feet.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As we move from the new moon on the 25th into a waxing crescent,
astronomical tides remain elevated. We should have a reprieve
from any coastal flooding concerns through the day on Thursday
thanks to an offshore flow developing. On Friday however, winds
become northeasterly, so there is a risk for minor coastal
flooding, primarily along the NJ and DE Atlantic coast and for
the DE shores of the Delaware Bay. However, there is low
confidence at this point if levels will be high enough to
warrant an advisory, so will hold off on making any of those
decisions at this time. Chesapeake Bay and tidal portions of
the Delaware River should not have any tidal flooding impacts.
