Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
122 AM EDT Thu Oct 20 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over the eastern Great Lakes will gradually lift
northward across parts of eastern Canada through Thursday. High
pressure builds nearby Thursday and remains in place through
Saturday. A weak low then tracks north, coming from off the
southeast coast, sliding by offshore late this weekend/into next
week. A cold front looks to approach during the middle of next
week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A shortwave trough continues to lift north away from the area
early this morning. Clouds associated with the shortwave have
mostly dissipated across the area except for across the
southern Poconos. There is another weak shortwave set to move
thru towards morning, though given time of day and overall
weaker feature, don't expect nearly as much cloud cover with it.
The boundary layer mixing has persisted through early overnight
and thus winds have remained elevated. This will probably limit
any widespread frost development through daybreak, but some
areas of frost are still probable in more sheltered locations.
We will continue with the temperature forecast as earlier as
overall the pattern is running about as expected. Frost/freeze
headlines will remain in most areas where the season is still in
progress.
On Thursday, as the low lifts further north away from us, high
pressure gradually builds in so, you can expect mostly sunny
skies and moderating temperatures. Readings will remain below
normal, but about 5 degrees warmer than today on average, and
with more sun, it'll feel even warmer by comparison. A southwest
breeze will persist around 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The period starts with the mid-level trof continuing its trek
northward through Quebec. This will allow for a more zonal
pattern through Friday. The mid-level flow will become more
southwest Friday night and persist into Saturday. At the
surface, high pressure will strengthen Thursday night and
continue to strengthen Friday into Saturday.
No precipitation is expected through the period, but
temperatures will be cold enough for frost development Thursday
night. The frost should be fairly widespread. With the overnight
lows expected to be about 5 degrees warmer Friday night vs.
Thursday night, less frost is expected.
Some mid-to high-level clouds will be around Thursday night and
into Friday, but skies should be mostly clear for all intents
and purposes. Just some high clouds Friday night are
anticipated. Less confident with things on Saturday as a thicker
veil of clouds, associated with low pressure to our south, will
eventually get up into our area. I would say the first half of
Saturday will yield plenty of sun. Clouds could be on the
increase in the afternoon.
Thursday night's lows will be in the 30s to around 40 across
the region. Highs on Friday will be in the mid 50s to mid 60s.
Friday night's lows will be in the upper 30s to lower/mid 40s.
Saturday's highs will be 60s to maybe even 70 degrees.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Cloud cover increases on Saturday night as a weak coastal low
moves north from the southeast US coast. Showers look to hold
off until daybreak Sunday, though cloud cover will keep
nighttime lows in the mid to upper 40s for most, with low 50s in
Delmarva, coastal areas, and South Jersey.
Sunday will begin a period of unsettled weather that could last
into next week. The weak coastal low will slide by to the east,
with northeast onshore flow taking over. Deterministic guidance
has come into some agreement, bringing showers in by daybreak
Sunday, with areas of showers overspreading the region by the
early afternoon. Went with Chc PoPs through daytime Sunday as
confidence is increasing for a bit of a wet Sunday.
Probabilistic guidance shows the highest probabilities of
measurable rain/highest amounts closest to the coast, with the
lower probabilities out to our western zones. Followed this
trend for PoPs on Sunday/Sunday night with an east to west
gradient of PoPs. Could be a bit gusty on Sunday as the coastal
low will be at its closest point to the region. Bumped winds up
a bit going with a blend of NBM/NBM 90th percentile for winds.
Gusts along the coast could get near 25-30 MPH at times, with
lower values further inland. With more overcast conditions and
onshore flow, temperatures will be a bit cooler compared to
Saturday, with low to mid 60s expected through the region.
Overnight lows will be in the upper 40s/low 50s.
Confidence remains low for Monday onward. Still a lot
uncertainty on how fast the trough/associated surface low move
out of the region, especially with a relatively strong ridge
over Quebec/Newfoundland. Ensemble guidance leans on the slower
slide which would result in a more unsettled day Monday/Tuesday.
It does look like we could see some improvement though, however
I did keep some slight Chc PoPs in for areas north and east of
Philadelphia as the low lifts out. As the trough/low moves away,
there will be some sun peeking through the clouds, with Monday
being in the mid to upper 60s. Tuesday could be even warmer with
areas east of the Fall Line likely getting into the low 70s.
By the middle of next week, a deep trough begins to approach
with a strong surface low likely swinging through the Upper
Midwest. This would drop a cold front through our region, which
could bring another period of unsettled weather. Specifics will
become more clear as we get closer.
