.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front crosses the area later today with some showers and
perhaps a couple thunderstorms. Low pressure meanders from the
eastern Great Lakes to near James Bay Canada through Wednesday,
bringing dry and chilly air into our region. High pressure will
build up from the southwest later Wednesday and Thursday,
before becoming more centered to our east and northeast Friday
and into the weekend, allowing for a gradual warming trend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
We actually saw a brief thunderstorm pass by Monroe County
around 7-8AM this morning, tracking quickly northeast out of the
forecast area. This was associated with a small area of elevated
instability. That will be the exception through early this
afternoon, with any shower activity restricted to southern
Delaware and perhaps the NJ shore. The main change with this
update was to add thunder in for late this afternoon and this
evening as a cold front sparks more shower development while
passing from west to east across our region. High-res models
differ a little on the exact timing and strength of showers and
any thunderstorms, but agree on the general idea that a broken
line will develop around 2-4 pm in southeastern PA, then track
eastward across the Philadelphia/Trenton vicinity early this
evening, eventually reaching the coast toward 8 PM. There is
quite a bit of deep layer shear evident in forecast soundings
with some strong southwest flow in the mid-levels, but low-level
winds are weaker. Sunshine will be very limited if present at
all, but with somewhat steep low-level lapse rates and dewpoints
rising into the mid 50s, modest CAPE around 200-400 j/kg could
be enough for a few thunderstorms. SPC has added us to a
marginal (5%) risk of severe, with strong winds being the
potential threat, and we added 'gusty winds' to the weather
grids with any storms. That is still a very low threat of any
severe weather, but given the shear, some short bowing segments
might support some wind gusts into the 30 to 40 mph range,
possibly up to 50 mph if everything lines up perfectly. Winds
look relatively light otherwise, with just some southerly
breezes allowing for one last mild day before winds shift to
west and northwest and ease behind the cold front tonight.

Cold advection will take place tonight with temperatures
dropping into the upper 30s to middle 40s by daybreak on
Tuesday. Showers might flirt with the NJ shore overnight, but
otherwise we will be dry by morning, with clearing skies from
west to east early Tuesday morning.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
A stretch of chilly/cold weather with nightly frost or freeze
conditions for much of the region.

As we go through Tuesday, continued cold air advection will
result in the 850 mb temperatures dropping to -1C to -3C. A
potent closed low is forecast to be centered near Lake Huron
during Thursday with our area under cyclonic flow aloft. While
the air mass will be dry with dew points dropping into the low
30s to mid/upper 20s, the combination of cold air aloft and
daytime heating should result in stratocumulus development
especially for eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. It
is possible the forecast is not quite cloudy enough. It will be
a chilly to cold day with a breeze and the extent of the clouds
will have an impact on surface heating. High temperatures are
forecast to be in the low to mid 50s, however colder in the
Poconos into far northwestern New Jersey. Some clouds may hold
on for a time Tuesday evening especially from the Lehigh Valley
north and westward, however the loss of daytime heating should
allow for the clouds overall to dissipate. The winds are
anticipated to diminish quite a bit and this combined with a dry
air mass will set the stage for a cold night. A frost is
looking likely for much of the area outside of the urban
centers. Frost and/or freeze headlines look to be eventually
needed.

For Wednesday, the aforementioned closed low looks to gradually
shift north-northeastward away from the Great Lakes. The
cyclonic flow remains across our area with a chilly/cold air
mass in place with 850 mb temperatures lowering to -3C to -5C
(highs in the 40s and low/mid 50s). While much of the moisture
is closest to the eastern Great Lakes, it is possible some
rain/snow shower activity gets close to the Poconos for a time.
The low-level flow may still be more southwesterly though and
therefore will keep a dry forecast going for even the Poconos.
There should be some stratocumulus development once again
especially from mid/late morning to late afternoon, then a high
potential for frost/freeze conditions across much of the region
at night. Looks like we will need frost and/or freeze headlines,
with some frost potential for even some of the urban centers.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Summary...A chilly/cold start with the potential for more
frost/freeze conditions, then turning noticeably milder to end
the week and into the weekend.

Synoptic Overview...An expansive upper-level trough from
eastern Canada down to the Gulf Coast states will shift east and
gradually lift out Friday. However, a piece of the trough may
break off and become closed off across parts of the southeastern
U.S. Friday into the weekend. This may result in a coastal low
off the Carolinas over the weekend. A ridge should build into
the northern Mid-Atlantic region over the weekend. At the
surface, high pressure initially slides to our south while
extending close to our area Thursday into Friday. Another
surface high then becomes established off the New England coast
over the weekend which then extends southwestward across our
region.

For Thursday and Friday...An expansive upper-level trough
pivots across the East Coast with much of it lifting out by
later Friday. A southern piece of this however is forecast to
break off and possibly become a closed low across portions of
the southeastern U.S. With the passage of the trough axis late
Thursday into Friday, a weakening surface front may push across
our region. Given the dryness of the air mass along with a lack
of forcing, no precipitation is expected. The may concern is
frost and freeze Thursday night. Strong high pressure is not
forecast to be sitting over our area and with the idea of a weak
front moving through, this may prevent temperatures from really
bottoming out. Some places may get a freeze, however at least
areas of frost is anticipated. It will be another chilly day
Thursday with much of the area in the 50s for highs (cooler in
the Poconos), then as we loose more of the influence from the
upper-level trough Friday and some warm air advection begins the
highs will edge up into the lower 60s for many areas. It will
be chilly Friday night, but not as cold as the air mass
continues to modify (no frost concerns at this time).

For Saturday and Sunday...This time frame is looking mostly dry
and warmer (for now), however we will have to watch the
evolution of a potential closed low across the Carolina region.
This would support a surface low near the coast of the
Carolinas. A ridge aloft builds as a result to the north with
surface high pressure initially wedging down across our area.
There may be a coastal front developing north or northeast from
the aforementioned surface low, and as the low-level moisture
increases there could be some showers moving onshore as the low-
level flow becomes more onshore with time. This forecast is of
low confidence and we only have some slight chance PoPs Sunday
for along the coast and offshore. Some guidance suggests that
Sunday could become rather wet while others have the system much
weaker and drier. This will depend on the strength and track of
the upper-level trough and associated surface low to our south.

.AVIATION /14Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...Ceilings MVFR at times this morning. Conditions should
return to VFR for this afternoon, but could drop to MVFR at
times with some brief showers and thunderstorms possible as a
cold front passes through early this evening. Southwest wind
increasing to 6 to 12 knots. Medium to high confidence.

Tonight...Some MVFR possible early with showers and
thunderstorms along the cold front, then VFR with clearing skies
overnight from west to east. West northwest wind 8 knots or
less. Medium to high confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday and Wednesday...VFR. Westerly winds near 10 knots
during each day, and becoming light and variable overall each
night. Moderate confidence.

Thursday and Friday...VFR. West to southwest winds around 10
knots each day, then light and variable each night. Moderate
confidence.

.MARINE...
A south to southwest wind of 15 to 20 knots is anticipated for
today. Gusts around 25 knots are expected on our ocean waters
where wave heights should build to around 5 feet. As a result, a
Small Craft Advisory is in effect for our ocean waters. That
advisory ends for southern portions adjacent DE as winds have
already eased a bit around Buoy 9. A cold front is expected to
pass across our coastal waters early tonight with the wind
direction shifting to the west northwest. Some stronger showers
and even a thunderstorm is possible as the front comes through. Wind
speeds are expected to diminish to 10 to 15 knots overnight
with wave heights decreasing to 3 to 4 feet on our ocean waters.

Outlook...

Tuesday and Wednesday...The conditions should overall be below
Small Craft Advisory criteria. Westerly winds will still be up
around 20 kt or so, especially over the ocean waters away from
shore.

Thursday and Friday...The conditions are anticipated to be
below Small Craft Advisory criteria. Wind gusts should near 25
knots at times Thursday mainly on the Atlantic coastal waters.

central Sussex and northeastern Warren Counties through 400 PM EDT...

At 316 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over
Hope, or 14 miles southwest of Newton, moving northeast at 35 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
         unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is
         possible.
