.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure just off the Mid-Atlantic coast will continue to
drift out to sea today. A cold front approaches tonight and
crosses the region Monday and Monday night. High pressure builds
in from the west on Tuesday, then moves offshore by Thursday. A
cold front approaches by Saturday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Another upper level low rotating south of Nova Scotia was
analyzed on water vapor this morning with a mid-level ridge
located near the ArkLaTex and another close low over far western
Ontario. This morning, a weak pocket of PV was analyzed
overhead which helped hold onto some CU slightly longer than
diurnally favored, but besides this mostly clear skies and calm
winds are forecast through the remaining morning hours.
Later this morning, the mid-level ridge axis will remain
overhead in a somewhat weakened state as pieces of vorticity
stream east between the upper level low and ridge. The overall
moisture profile in forecast soundings today looks rather dry
with PWATs expected to be around 1.00" or the 25th percentile
for this time of year. So no precipitation is expected today.
High temperatures today will likely be rather similar to
yesterday with many locations observing 90 degrees, or just shy
of 90 degrees. Even though the mid-level ridge axis looks
slightly weaker today, 850 MB temperatures and 1000/850 MB
thicknesses remain almost identical to Saturday.
The upper level low over western Ontario will be rotating east
this evening with a pieces of PV, currently over central IL,
pushing east out in front. This will serve to create a weak
prefrontal trough just on the lee side of the Appalachians. High
res guidance has showers and isolated thunderstorms developing
along the low level convergence axis this afternoon with a slow
progression east northeast forecast. Overall, a rather rapid
decay of the precipitation is forecast as it runs into the ridge
axis. This will likely keep most of the area dry this evening
as PWATs take time to recover. The cold front, in association
with the mid-level wave, will be lagging slightly behind and
will approach eastern PA late tonight/ early Monday morning. At
this point, enough air mass modification looks to have taken
place (PWATs forecast to rise near 2.00" Monday morning) for
showers to move into the western zones.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Cold front will be moving into eastern Pennsylvania by Monday
morning. There are some differences between the 00Z/26 NAM and
the 00Z/26 GFS. The GFS is a bit faster than the NAM, and the
GFS has some stronger shortwave energy associated with it that
seems to be resulting in some heavier rainfall compared to the
NAM. Abundant cloud cover over the area will keep the region
much cooler on Monday compared with Sunday with highs in the 70s
to low 80s. This should result in limited CAPE, so while
widespread showers will develop across the region, thunderstorms
will be scattered, and not expecting severe weather. With
surface dew points well in the 60s to around 70, PWATs will be
over 2 inches. Locally heavy rain will develop, and WPC has the
region in a Marginal Risk for Excessive rainfall. Localized
flooding is possible.
Cold front moves offshore Monday night, and then Canadian high
pressure builds in from the west and will move into the Ohio
Valley and eastern Great Lakes on Tuesday. Highs will be in the
70s with surface dew points in the 50s. Conditions will be dry
Tuesday night with lows in the 50s and low 60s.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure continues to builds east and moves offshore on
Wednesday. Temperatures will begin to warm up on Wednesday as
return flow sets up behind the departing high. Conditions will
be quiet with increasing warmth and humidity as surface dew
points rise into the 50s and 60s. High temperatures will
gradually warm into the upper 80s and low 90s.
By Saturday, a surface cold front approaches from the west
along with a mid-level trough and shortwave energy. Bermuda high
pressure will be just offshore, ushering that hot and humid
airmass into the region ahead of that front with highs in the
upper 80s to low 90s and surface dew points well in the 60s,
possibly approaching 70. That approaching cold front/upper
trough combo sets the stage for potential active weather. For
now, will generally carry chance PoPs throughout with low-end
likely PoPs for the southern Poconos.

.AVIATION /07Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
This morning...VFR. Patchy fog potential, while chances are not
quite zero, is notably reduced from previous nights. Winds
light and variable to southwesterly generally 5 knots or so.
High confidence.
Today...VFR. Any patchy fog burns off quickly with high clouds
becoming dominant late. Any showers/storms moving in from the
west likely wait until evening to affect most terminals, with
possible exception of KRDG. Winds southwest 5-10 knots but a few
gusts may approach 20 knots in the afternoon. High confidence.
Tonight...VFR likely early, but sub-VFR possible at intervals
due to showers and thunderstorms, mainly western terminals in
the evening, potentially further east overnight. Winds southerly
5-10 kts. Moderate confidence.
Outlook...
Monday through Monday night...Varying sub-VFR and VFR
conditions in SHRA and scattered TSRA throughout the day. SW
winds 5 to 10 kt, becoming W late in the day, then NW Monday
night. Moderate confidence.
Tuesday through Tuesday night...VFR. NW winds 5 to 10 kt.
Afternoon sea breezes turning winds S in the afternoon, then
LGT/VRB Tuesday night. High confidence.
Wednesday through Thursday...VFR. S winds 5 to 10 kt on
Wednesday, becoming W on Thursday. High confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Today... Southerly winds 5 to 10 kts this morning gradually
increasing 10 to 15 kts this afternoon. Wind gusts near SCA
criteria later today. Seas 2 to 4 ft.
Tonight...A seasonably strong LLJ will develop tonight with
south to southwest winds sustained at 15 to 20 kts. Wind gusts
of around 25 kts appears likely tonight. Seas 4 to 5 ft. Due to
the elevated wind gusts and seas, have issued an SCA for all of
the NJ and DE Atlantic coastal waters starting tonight and
continuing into Monday afternoon.
Outlook...
Monday through Monday night...SCA conditions will continue
through Monday. SW winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts to 25 kt,
diminishing to 10 to 15 kt late, then turning NW at night. Seas
3 to 5 ft in the morning, subsiding to 2 to 4 ft in the
afternoon.
Tuesday through Tuesday night...Sub-SCA conditions. NW winds 10
to 15 kt in the morning, becoming S in the afternoon, then SW
at night. Seas 2 to 3 ft.
Wednesday through Wednesday night...Sub-SCA conditions. S winds
10 to 15 kt, turning SW at night. Seas 2 to 3 ft.
Thursday...Sub-SCA conditions. S winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts
to 20 kt.
Rip Currents...
Southerly winds will increase to around 15 to 20 mph today.
Breaking waves will likely be around 2 feet with a medium period
easterly swell. This should result in a MODERATE risk for the
development of dangerous rip currents for the NJ shore with a
LOW risk for the DE Beaches.
Winds will remain around 15 to 20 mph for Monday but turn a
little more parallel to the shore as they veer to southwest.
However, we will also be within one day of the New Moon. For
this reason a MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous rip
currents will continue for the NJ shore with a LOW risk
continuing for the DE Beaches.
