Area forecast discussion, Mar 22, 11:55 AM EDT, 3 hours 34 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1155 AM EDT Tue Mar 22 2022 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will nose into our region from the northwest and north for today and tonight. Low pressure is forecast to progress from the lower Missouri River Valley on Tuesday to eastern Ontario on Thursday. The low is expected to pull a warm front into eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey on Wednesday night. A secondary low is anticipated to develop along the boundary in our vicinity on Thursday before strengthening and moving away to our northeast on Friday. A cold front from the northwest is forecast to arrive on Saturday evening, followed by high pressure for Sunday into Monday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... A weak cold front dropped through our region during the night. High pressure is expected to nose down from the northwest and north, bringing another dry day. An area of mid to high level clouds will remain across the area through today as a mid level disturbance approaches the area. Otherwise, quiet weather is expected. Temperatures should recover back to about 8 degrees above normal at most locations during the afternoon with no real push of cold air behind the front. The wind is anticipated to settle into the northwest around 5 to 10 MPH. High clouds are expected for tonight with a light northerly wind becoming northeast. Lows are forecast to be mostly in the 30s and lower 40s in our region. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... A mid level ridge axis is forecast to pass overhead on Wednesday. Surface low pressure is anticipated to progress from northern Illinois and vicinity on Wednesday morning to eastern Ontario on Thursday. It is expected to pull a warm front into eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey on Wednesday night where it should nearly stall. A developing onshore flow ahead of the warm front should keep temperatures close to normal for Wednesday. As the mid level ridge axis slides to our east and as the warm front approaches from the south, we should see lowering cloud cover and an increasing potential for rain from Wednesday into Wednesday night. A southwesterly 40+ knot low level is forecast to pass over our region on Wednesday night. Some instability should develop, mainly on the coastal plain, for Wednesday night into Thursday morning. As a result, we will keep the mention of a chance of thunder in the forecast along with the potential for a period of heavy rainfall, again mostly on the coastal plain. The east to northeast low level flow on Wednesday night may bring a narrow layer of below freezing air just above the surface to the Poconos and far northern New Jersey. We have included a chance of sleet for parts of those areas. The arrival of the warm front on Wednesday night will likely result in a wide range of temperatures in our region from north to south. Lows should be in the middle 30s in the Poconos and in far northern New Jersey, and in the middle 50s in southern Delaware. The variation in temperatures is expected to carry into Thursday, with highs around 50 in the north and near 70 in the south. A wave of low pressure is forecast to gradually develop along the slow moving warm front on Thursday. A secondary shot of rain is anticipated with the feature into Thursday evening as it begins to move away to our northeast. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The secondary low is expected to move quickly to our northeast, reaching Canada's Maritime Provinces on Friday afternoon. At the same time, a short wave trough is forecast to pass over our region, reinforcing the drying trend. A long wave trough is expected to settle over the eastern states for the period from Saturday into Monday. A robust short wave along with a surface cold front are anticipated to arrive on Saturday evening. There could be some light rain showers with that system. Temperatures are forecast to drop below normal for Sunday and Monday with high pressure building toward our region from the northwest. && .AVIATION /16Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Today...VFR. Northwest wind 5 to 10 knots, with occasional gusts 15 to 20 knots. High confidence.
