What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Mar 17, 1:03 AM EDT, 2 hours 3 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Mar 17, 1:03 AM EDT, 2 hours 3 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 103 AM EDT Thu Mar 17 2022 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure over the western Atlantic will slowly drift out to sea. Meanwhile, low pressure develops over the Southeast and tracks towards the Mid-Atlantic tonight, then passes south and east of the area Thursday through Thursday night. High pressure briefly returns on Friday, and then low pressure slowly passes north of the region Friday night through Sunday night. High pressure briefly returns on Monday, followed by another system for the middle of next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... Surface low with an associated closed low aloft continues to lumber across the SE CONUS with the northern extent of rain associated with this still pretty far south over North Carolina pushing into Virginia. Made only a few minor adjustments for the 1 am update with most of the forecast staying largely on track. The weather stays quiet and mild through the remainder of this evening but clouds increase by late evening with rain beginning to move into portions of Delmarva and southern NJ after 6z as the low moves north and east through the Carolina's. For Thursday, the aforementioned low will continue moving north and east off the coast, passing east of the region along with the associated closed low aloft. There are still some differences in the models regarding the speed of the system and how much QPF occurs over the area but the general trend continues to be for a wetter solution. In fact this could be similar to the kind of setup we sometimes see in a colder environment with heavier "banded precip" on the north/west flank of the system. In this case it won't be snow but the latest model trends generally depict heavier rain amounts. Forecast was a model consensus weighted a bit heavier towards the 00z ECMWF and 12z GEM Regional as this seems to be fit conceptual model. Thus, a rainy day is expected for most with rain continuing to quickly overspread the area through Thursday morning. It could even become occasionally moderate to even heavy by around late morning into early afternoon as PWats will be over an inch with a fairly good LLJ wrapping in from the E/SE around the system. It's looking like most areas (especially from around I-95 south) will be seeing the rain falling for most of the day before it starts to taper off west to east towards the late afternoon. We've increased total rain amounts to generally around a half inch to an inch from the urban quarter southward with a quarter to half inch for most areas farther north. This lies near the middle of the spread as a lot of the high res guidance remains lower than this while models such as the GEM Reg have max amounts closer to 2+ inches over SE PA. This is likely too high though so most likely there won't be any significant hydro issues beyond possible nuisance poor drainage type flooding. The rain will also keep it cooler so highs tomorrow will generally be in the 50s. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Rain tapers off Thursday evening as low pressure tracks out to sea. High pressure briefly builds into the Mid-Atlantic, and surface ridging will extend up the coast. With a moist air mass in place, can expect patchy fog to develop, especially in areas where the heaviest rain fell. Plenty of sunshine on Friday, and with strong warm air advection in place, highs will climb well into the 70s throughout, except , of course, for cooler conditions in the mountains and right along the coast due to onshore flow from the colder ocean waters. The high slides offshore late Friday, and low pressure over the Midwest lifts northeast towards the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Friday night. Rain will develop well after midnight. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Unsettled conditions for the first half of the weekend as low pressure lifts from the eastern Great Lakes northeast into eastern Canada. Saturday will be cloudy, cool, and rainy throughout the day with the passage of the low, which will be north of New York State Saturday night. Rain tapers off in the evening, and then conditions dry out late Saturday night through Sunday. A cold front passes through the region behind the departing low. Temperatures cool off for Sunday, but will still be above normal, topping off in the 50s to around 60. High pressure briefly returns for Monday, and temperatures warm back up into the low to mid 60s. Another area of low pressure looks to take a run at the Northeast and mid-Atlantic sometime by the middle of next week. Most of Tuesday looks to be dry before rain returns Tuesday night and Wednesday. && .AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...Mainly VFR. Clouds thicken with cigs dropping below 10 kft through the overnight but most likely any restrictions hold off until right around or shortly after 10z. South- southeast winds 5 to 10 knots becoming east-southeast overnight around 5 knots or less. Moderate confidence. Thursday...Sub-VFR conditions with rain affecting the TAF sites for most of the day. Most TAF sites should see the rain arrive with conditions dropping to MVFR then eventually IFR through the 11-15z timeframe except at RDG and ABE where this will occur an hour or two later. Northeast winds generally 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Thursday night...Rain tapers off in the evening. Conditions slowly improve through the night, although some patchy fog may result in lowered VSBYs. LGT/VRB winds. Moderate confidence. Friday...VFR. Light S-SW winds. Moderate confidence. Friday night...CIGs lower through the night. Rain develops after midnight. Sub-VFR conditions will develop late. SE winds 5 to 10 kt. Low confidence. Saturday...Sub-VFR conditions in rain and fog. S winds 5 to 10 kt, becoming SW late in the day. Moderate confidence. Saturday night...Rain tapers off in the evening and conditions improve thereafter. SW winds 5 to 10 kt, becoming W late. Moderate confidence. Sunday through Monday...VFR. W winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt on Sunday, diminishing Sunday night, then becoming NW 10 to 5 kt with gusts up to 20 kt on Monday. Moderate confidence. && .MARINE... The conditions should stay below Small Craft Advisory levels through Thursday. However, there will be a low pressure system moving over or just south of the waters Thursday bringing northeast winds increasing to 15 to 20 knots. Expect seas generally around 2 feet through tonight increasing to around 3 feet for Thursday. Outlook... Thursday night..West winds 5 to 10 kt. Seas may build to 5 feet on the ocean waters, and a SCA may be needed. Friday through Friday night...Sub-SCA conditions expected. Saturday through Saturday night...Winds may gust to 25 kt, and seas will build to 4 to 6 ft. A SCA may be needed. Sunday...A SCA may be needed for winds potentially gusting to 25 kt and seas 3 to 5 feet. Monday...Sub-SCA conditions expected with winds gusting to 20 kt. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
