Area forecast discussion, Feb 21, 9:55 AM EST, 5 hours 26 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 955 AM EST Mon Feb 21 2022 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure develops today in the Central Plains before moving into the Great Lakes Tuesday, then it tracks near the Saint Lawrence River Valley Tuesday night. An associated cold front crosses our region Wednesday afternoon. High pressure then builds to our north, however it wedges down into our area Thursday into Friday. An area of low pressure then arrives from the southwest late Thursday into Friday, followed by high pressure building in during Saturday. The next cold front may arrive later Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Morning update... It's a quiet weather morning across the region, with satellite showing just some high clouds streaming across the north. Dry and mostly sunny conditions will continue in light southwest flow with high pressure offshore. With this update, did make both upwards adjustments to temperatures and downward adjustments to dew points. Today certainly matches the profile of days we often see this time of year during warm advection where we mix out more efficiently than expected and end up warmer and drier than forecast. Think many spots have a good chance to hit 60 today, or at least get well into the 50s. Also, with light flow, coastal sea breezes are likely later this afternoon, which will bring cooling there. Previous discussion follows... High pressure moving offshore today will be the driving force behind the southerly flow with a stalled cold front to our north over the Great Lakes into Ontario and Quebec. Though this front will nudge south and east into portions of New England, it will remain well north of our region as developing low pressure on its western flank will drive its retreat back northward as it transitions to a warm front over the Midwest. Highs today will climb into the mid to upper 50s, making a run at 60 from Philly and points south into Delaware. While tomorrow also looks warm with southerly flow continuing, incoming rain will put more a damper on the afternoon. Thus, today looks to take the claim of the choice day of the week, so a good time to spend outdoors, especially this afternoon. A mild night tonight as well with winds turning slightly more southeasterly ahead of the developing surface low over the Midwest. Lows will drop into the upper 30s to lower 40s south. As flow turns onshore, dew points will begin to trend upwards into the 30s and lower 40s by Tuesday morning. This will likely result in some patchy fog, especially across the valleys in northern New Jersey and the eastern Lehigh Valley. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... Summary...Much warmer air surges into the area, however there will be a period of rain. A surface low tracks near the Ohio Valley then into the eastern Great Lakes later Tuesday. Increasing low-level warm air advection to the east of this feature will assist in generating increasing forcing for ascent. This will also become enhanced with the arrival of 850/925 mb 50-70 knot jets. An area of rain is therefore expected to overspread our area especially Tuesday afternoon and evening, then things should dry out overnight Tuesday as the main forcing shifts to our northeast. The most widespread rain should initially develop west of the fall line, then spread eastward. Despite the rain Tuesday, deep southerly flow and warm air advection will result in temperatures getting well into the 50s for much of the area with even some areas in the coastal plain away from the coast getting to 60 or even into the low 60s. As the boundary layer warms, improved vertical mixing is forecast to develop Tuesday afternoon and evening and therefore a notable breeze will occur (becoming gusty at times). As we go through Wednesday, a shortwave trough lifts across parts of southeastern Canada and surface low pressure will be well to our north. An associated cold front however will move across our area during the afternoon. We will be well within the warm sector for a while though with temperatures well into the 60s for much of the area. If enough breaks in the clouds occur, some places may touch 70F in the coastal plain away from the coast. It looks like much of the dynamics are northeast of our region and therefore this may limited showers with the cold front. However, given the potential for a little instability some showers should occur as the cold front arrives with this potential the greatest across Delmarva and southern New Jersey. The main low-level cold air advection is forecast be delayed some behind the cold front with more notable cooling take place later Wednesday night. This will occur as strong and cold high pressure builds across the Great Lakes and adjacent Canada and starts to wedge southward into the Mid-Atlantic. This will set the stage for the return of some wintry weather as we go through Thursday. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Summary...Some wintry precipitation for at least parts of our region to start, the colder over the weekend. Synoptic Overview...A ridge centered to our south gets pushed farther south and east Thursday. An upper-level trough is then forecast to eject into the Central Plains Thursday and quickly translate northeastward across the Great Lakes Thursday night into Friday. This drives surface low pressure up the Ohio Valley, however strong surface high pressure across Canada is wedged down into our region. This setup is very favorable for cold air damming and overrunning, along with a secondary surface low development near the Mid-Atlantic coast. This storm shifts to our northeast by Friday evening with the flow aloft turning more zonal again for a time. This allows surface high pressure to build into our area during Saturday, however the next upper-level trough moving across the Great Lakes should toss a cold front our way later Sunday. For Thursday and Friday...While confidence in the details remains on the low side, the synoptic setup continues to favor cold air damming across much of our area. Shortwave trough sliding across the Great Lakes will support surface low pressure riding up the Ohio Valley or the spine of the Applachians. The affects of cold high pressure centered to our north for a time results in cold air damming and favors a secondary surface low forming just off the Mid-Atlantic coast. The ensemble guidance differs at least some in the placement and even strength of this feature, which will greatly impact the thermal fields across our area. There certainly is the potential for a wintry mix for at least parts of our area, and if the colder guidance is correct then a period of accumulating snow could occur mainly north of the I-78 corridor. If the surface low however tracks right over our area, this would result in milder air across at least the southern areas (rain) and more of a wintry mix/ice across the northern areas (warmer air aloft). There is still plenty of time to watch this system evolve and therefore changes will likely occur to the forecast. Given the continued uncertainty with the details at this time range, kept the precipitation types simple with a rain, snow or rain/snow mix. Quick drying and improving conditions should occur late Friday and especially during Friday night as the entire system shifts to our northeast. For Saturday and Sunday...In the wake of the aformentioned storm, the flow aloft turns more zonal for a time. Surface high pressure therefore builds eastward and over our area during Saturday, then weakens southward into Sunday. Cold but dry conditions are currently forecast associated with this incoming strong surface high, however an incoming trough from the Great Lakes and Midwest should toss a cold front our way later Sunday. && .AVIATION /15Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Today...VFR. Southwesterly winds from 5 to 10 knots gradually turning more southerly into the afternoon and evening. High confidence. Tonight...Mostly VFR through much of the night with MVFR CIGs near and after 11Z. Light southeasterly winds turning variable at times. Patchy fog possible with local restrictions. High confidence. Outlook... Tuesday...MVFR to IFR ceilings. Periods of rain developing, especially in the afternoon and evening with visibilities lowering to MVFR/IFR at times. Southeast to south winds 5-10 knots in the morning, increasing to 10-15 knots in the afternoon and evening. Low- level wind shear possible. Moderate confidence. Wednesday...MVFR/IFR conditions in the morning, then VFR in the afternoon. Southwest winds 10-15 knots, becoming northwest with gusts up to 25 knots in the afternoon. Moderate confidence. Thursday and Friday...MVFR/IFR conditions probable with the arrival of precipitation (some wintry precipitation probable). North to northeast winds 5-10 knots Thursday, becoming westerly 10-15 knots later Friday. Low confidence. && .MARINE... Sub-advisory conditions expected through tonight with southwest winds turning southerly tonight from 15 to 20 knots. Seas from 2 to 3 feet. Outlook... Tuesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions probable due to gusty southerly winds. A period of gale force wind gusts is possible Tuesday night, however this is of low confidence due to much warmer air moving over the colder waters. Wednesday...A period of Small Craft Advisory conditions may continue before the overall conditions improve. Thursday...The conditions should be mainly below Small Craft Advisory criteria. Friday...Small Craft Advisory conditions possible. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None. DE...None. MD...None.
