Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
912 AM EST Sun Feb 13 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will pass southeast and east of the region today.
Strong high pressure will build across the region Monday through
Tuesday. As the high moves offshore into Wednesday, strong
southerly flow will develop through Thursday. Low pressure will
pass from the Ohio Valley Thursday and progress quickly across
the Saint Lawrence Valley Thursday night. This will push a
strong cold front across the area Thursday night with high
pressure returning for Friday and Saturday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
There was a bit of a lull in the snowfall rates this morning.
However, another band of snow was beginning to develop and
advect northeastward along the Interstate 95 Corridor and
vicinity around 9:00 AM. That should continue to be the trend
during the balance of the morning with the band drifting
eastward and off the coast late this afternoon. With
temperatures at or just above freezing, additional snowfall
amounts in those area should be no more than an inch or two.
Meanwhile, for the areas to the northwest of the Interstate 95
Corridor where the overnight snow over-performed, the current
trends suggest little additional snow accumulation, with the
snow mostly coming to an end by afternoon.
The Winter Weather Advisories will be left in place and may
need to be adjusted around midday.
Temperatures are expected to change little through the day. A
northerly wind at generally 5 to 10 MPH is anticipated.
For tonight, the steady snows associated with the offshore low
will be moving away this evening as colder and drier air pours
across the area. Some snow showers back across central PA seem
to diminish as they approach our SW areas this evening so we'll
hold on adding any pops for snow showers tonight. Lows will be
frigid tonight with single digits up across the Poconos and
teens elsewhere. Winds chills will be mostly 5 to 10 degrees
lower than the air temps. Winds will be Northwest at 5 to 10
mph.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Relatively tranquil conditions are expected during this period.
It will start out quite cold before temperatures start to
moderate heading towards midweek. To start the period Monday,
low pressure will continue to deepen over the waters of Atlantic
Canada while high pressure approaches from the west. This will
result in a continuing pressure gradient over the area causing
brisk NW winds. Winds will generally be 10 to 15 with gusts of
20 to 25+ mph. This will continue to usher in a cold, dry
airmass under a mix of sun and clouds with highs mostly in the
20s to around 30 except teens over the southern Poconos. The
wind chill will make it feel even colder.
High pressure builds in right over the area for Monday night
and Tuesday bringing mainly clear skies with diminishing winds.
The result will be good conditions for radiational cooling so
Monday night looks to be quite cold...lows mostly in the teens
except single digits over the southern Poconos, NW NJ, and
potentially over the Pine Barrens as well. The airmass starts to
moderate for Tuesday though with highs roughly 5 to 10 degrees
warmer than Monday, mostly in the 30s except 20s over the
southern Poconos.
Heading into Tuesday night, high pressure begins to retreat to
the east with the flow eventually turning light southeasterly.
This will make for a tricky low temperature forecast since the
airmass will be continuing to modify yet decoupling could still
occur in many spots. For now, forecasting lows mostly in the
teens over the colder spots of NE PA, NW NJ, and the Pine
Barrens with low to mid 20s elsewhere. The potential exists
though for it to be colder than this.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure moves off the coast as it pushes east of the
Canadian Maritimes through Wednesday. This will allow a
southerly return flow to set up with temperatures moderating to
the 40s (north) and low to mid 50s south.
Things start to get more active as we head into Thursday.
Expect low pressure will pass from the Ohio Valley and progress
quickly across the Saint Lawrence Valley through Thursday into
Thursday night while intensifying. Guidance is in fairly good
agreement that the associated cold front will push across the
area sometime Thursday night or early Friday. This system will
bring widespread rain showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms.
With PWats climbing to near 1.5", heavy rain will be a threat
with any convectively enhanced elements of the precipitation (or
any storms). However, this system will be quite progressive and
there won't be any snowpack on the ground in most areas, so I
don't think we will see any significant or widespread flooding
concerns. We'll have to keep an eye on the potential for a
marginal severe weather threat will this system as well. As it
currently stands, the instability will be extremely limited, but
just something to monitor in the coming days. The main
timeframe of precipitation currently appears to be mostly during
the Thursday afternoon and Thursday night timeframe, but there
is still plenty of time for this to wiggle around a bit. The
precip should be mostly over with the front offshore by daybreak
Friday.
Southerly gradient winds will increase during the daytime
Thursday before the cold front arrives with sustained values of
15-25 mph and gusts of 30-40 mph possible, especially near the
coasts. Breezy conditions will continue behind the front into
Friday as well, but the strongest winds look to be mostly ahead
of the front in the warm sector. Ridging and surface high
pressure will return for Friday and Saturday with temperatures
returning to seasonable values.

.AVIATION /14Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Rest of Today...Plenty of low CIGS/VSBYS into the afternoon
with a large shield of (mostly) snow across the region.
Improvement from SW to NE this afternoon with 'back to VFR' by
late afternoon. North winds around 10 kts then wind will turn
more NW later this afternoon.
Tonight...Mostly VFR, however some snow showers will occur and
may affect a few of the terminals with lower CIGS/VSBYS for
short periods. MVFR/IFR possible with any more significant snow
shower. Limited confid in timing/location attm. Northwest winds
5 to 10 kts.
Outlook...
Monday...VFR. Northwesterly winds 10-15 kts with some gusts of
20 to 25 kts possible. Winds becoming westerly 5 kts or less
after 00Z. High confidence.
Tuesday...VFR. Westerly winds 5-10 kts during the day will
shift south to southeasterly 5 kts or less after 00Z. High
confidence.
Wednesday through Wednesday night...VFR with increasing cloud
cover. Southerly winds 10-15 kts with some gusts to around 20
kts possible. LLWS possible at night. High confidence.
Thursday...Initially VFR with sub-VFR restrictions likely
developing near or after 18Z. Moderate to heavy rain showers.
Southerly winds 10-20 kts with gusts around 30 kts possible.

with gusts up to 25 kts before daybreak Friday. LLWS possible
through Thursday evening. Moderate confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Winds and seas are on an slow upward track, mostly for the
southern NJ coastal and DE coastal waters as the pressure
gradient into the offshore storm improves. A SCA flag that was
already issued earlier was expanded a bit to pad some 25 knot
gusts expected later this morning and into the early afternoon.
A slightly later ending time to the SCA also. After a short lull
into the evening, then more SCA winds and seas will develop
later tonight and last into Monday. Snow/Rains into the
afternoon then fair weather expected.
Outlook...
Monday...Advisory conditions likely. North to northwesterly
winds 15-20 kts with gusts to 25 kts. Seas 3-5 feet.
Monday night through Tuesday night...Sub-advisory conditions
expected. Westerly winds 10-15 kts will shift to the southeast
Tuesday night. Seas 2-3 feet.
Wednesday through Wednesday night...Advisory conditions
possibly developing. Southerly winds 15-20 kts with gusts up to
25 kts possible. Seas 2-4 feet, possibly near 5 feet Wednesday
night.
Thursday...Advisory conditions likely with gale force
winds/gusts possible. Southerly winds 20-30+ kts. Seas
increasing to 5-8 feet, possibly over 10 feet Thursday night.
Moderate to heavy rain showers developing late.
