Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A backdoor cold front continues to stall over our region this
afternoon but will lift back north of the area as a warm front
tonight. A strong cold front will cross our region Thursday night
with high pressure building in its wake into Friday and Saturday.
High pressure will move offshore into Sunday with a cold front
approaching from the west by Tuesday. High pressure should build
back into the area into the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
For the remainder of today, the stratus will continue to very
gradually pull back eastward as mixing slowly increases thanks
to the strong June sun, despite the relatively cool surface
temperatures east of the front. Further west, cumulus will
continue to build, especially in the north where terrain
circulations will assist in development. In this area
particularly, stronger upper level forcing combined with better
CAPE will result in the best chance of strong to severe storms.
Shear will also be maximized along the backdoor front, so an
isolated tornado can't be ruled out either. Latest mesoscale
guidance suggests peak risks will not be with this first cluster
currently in the Poconos, but with the second cluster further
upstream in south-central NY and north-central PA. This won't
arrive for several more hours, likely towards sunset.

After that, loss of insulation and storms moving into the stable
layer east of the backdoor front will result in weakening of
convection, with coverage rapidly declining towards midnight and
beyond. By this point, the backdoor front will start to advance
southwest again, and this time the low clouds and perhaps some
fog will spread across most of the region for the late night.
Temps will stabilize in the 60s for most.

On Thursday, most of the area will start with low stratus and
perhaps some fog. This won't last however, as strong southwest
flow ahead of the next shortwave and primary cold front should
allow the low level stable layer to quickly mix out as we head
through the morning. Thus, expect fairly widespread 80s on
Thursday, with dew points well into the 60s. Combined with the
approaching strong shortwave and surface boundary, and we will
have a good recipe for more severe storms, this time affecting
much of the area. Forcing is fairly good area-wide, but
instability will be better to the south, so best severe risk
looks like its Philly metro on southward. There is also a
marginal flood risk given wet antecedent conditions, but storms
may move fast enough to keep it isolated. Thus, no flood watch
is currently planned.

Guidance is a little uncertain about exactly when storms end
Thursday night, with some models lingering activity thru much of
the night while others cut it off soon after sunset. There does
appear to be a gap between when storms end and the actual front
moves through, thus an opportunity for patchy fog development.
Temps will drop to the 60s again.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will slowly begin to build in across the region on
Friday. While a few showers may linger to start the day, overall a
dry and cooler day can be anticipated. Less humidity is expected as
dew points will drop from the 60s into the upper 40s and 50s.
Afternoon highs will be in the 70s.

The weekend is shaping up nicely with benign mid-level flow aloft
and surface high pressure overhead. Humidity levels will remain low
(dew points in the 40s and 50s) as high temperatures climb each day
into the 70s to around 80. As of now, models keep the area dry
through Saturday night, but we'll have to keep an eye on the
potential for some showers across our far northwest zones.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The main features of interest in the extended are a cold front that
looks to move across the region Tuesday and a potential tropical
system well to our south over the Atlantic. While this system has
not even formed, some of the global guidance strengthens it and
takes the system northeast into the open Atlantic well to our south.
At this point any impact would mostly be a light northeasterly flow
and some potential swell from the east. This feature may also work
to slow the arrival of the cold front into Tuesday should it
continue to trend more robust and north. This would increase ridging
over our area and likely lead to a longer period of tranquil weather
with a stronger surface high over Northeast. Again, no direct
impacts are expected to our region with the forecast from the
National Hurricane Center.

Sunday looks to stay dry and sunny with the surface high moving just
to our north. At this point the chance for any showers seems to have
dwindled over the northern half of the are as the shortwave looks to
travel more to our north. Highs should be right around normal in
the upper 70s to around 80.

For Monday and Tuesday...The mid level flow may end up remaining
more zonal across our region during this time frame, with an initial
trough lifting across the Canadian Maritimes into Tuesday. A
shortwave trough sliding eastward in the wake of the larger Canadian
trough should toss a cold front our way Tuesday. Some guidance looks
to be faster with this feature, bringing the front into the area
later Monday. Some guidance also develops low pressure along the
front in the vicinity of the Ohio Valley, and if this occurs the
eastward progression of the cold front will be slowed. Showers may
accompany the front at some point during this time frame, however
this is of low confidence given timing differences in the guidance.
Daytime high temperatures are forecast to continue to be in the 70s
to low 80s both days.

We should clear out nicely into Wednesday with high pressure
building into the region as the front weakens and pushes
offshore. Highs don't drop off a whole lot, staying in the low
80s over most of the area.

.AVIATION /22Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
This evening...low cigs linger just east of the TAF sites.
Thunderstorms have a good chance of affecting KABE with
diminishing risk as one heads southward in this order: KRDG,
KTTN, KPNE, KPHL, KMIV, KACY. The wind should be mostly from the
east and southeast at 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...Storm risk lingers into the evening before dwindling
toward midnight. Thereafter, MVFR/IFR conditions are expected
to develop with low cigs and possibly reduced vsby. Variable
wind 6 knots or less. Low to medium confidence.

Thursday...Times of MVFR and/or IFR conditions with low
cigs/vsby in marine layer during the morning. Improvements by
midday, then more MVFR/IFR conditions associated with showers
and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Southeast winds
5-10 knots becoming southwest during the day. Low confidence in
timing details.

Thursday night...Showers and storms linger early with sub-VFR
intervals. Patchy fog may also result in sub-VFR conditions
later at night. Winds SW 5-10 becoming NW late.

Outlook...

Friday...Mainly VFR. NW winds 5 to 15 kts, becoming light and
variable at night. High confidence.

Saturday...VFR. W to NW winds 5 to 10 kts, becoming SW at ACY, then
light and variable Saturday night. Moderate confidence.

Sunday and Sunday night...VFR. Winds from the northeast in the
morning turning southeast in the afternoon from 5 to 10 knots.
Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
A dense fog advisory has been issued. Visibilities are trending
down from about Barnegat Inlet in New Jersey south to Fenwick
Island in Delaware. Visibilities are better north of Barnegat
Inlet. Right now, the advisory runs through 1 am. It may have to
be extended through the overnight, but we wanted to wait to see
how the upstream showers and thunderstorms affect current
visibilities.

The wind is then expected to veer to the east and southeast
this afternoon and evening behind a backdoor cold front. The
wind is forecast to become south to southwest overnight around
5 to 10 knots.

Waves on our ocean waters will likely be 2 to 3 feet. They
should be near 4 feet for a time this morning to the north of
Barnegat Inlet. Waves are expected to remain at 2 feet or less
on Delaware Bay.

Outlook...

Conditions are expected to be below Small Craft Advisory
criteria Thursday into Thursday night, though showers and
thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening could lead to
locally strong wind gusts.

Friday through Saturday night...with surface high pressure building
on Friday and remaining overhead on Saturday, Small Craft Advisory
conditions are not expected. NW winds 5 to 15 kts on Friday will
back to the SW on Saturday. Seas on the ocean will be in the 2 to 3
foot range.

Conditions are expected to be below Small Craft Advisory criteria
Sunday and Sunday night.

Rip currents...

Southeast winds 10 to 15 MPH can be expected into this evening.
Breaking waves should be around 2 feet along the New Jersey
coast, and 1 to 2 feet at the Delaware Beaches. A short to
medium period swell/wind wave varying from south to northeast is
anticipated. We will increase the rip current risk to MODERATE
along the New Jersey coast due to the onshore flow. We will keep
the risk at LOW for the Delaware Beaches since wind speeds and
breaking waves should be slightly lower there.

A light and variable wind on Thursday morning is expected to
become onshore at 5 to 10 MPH on Thursday afternoon. Breaking
waves should be around 1 foot with a short to medium period
swell/wind wave varying from south to northeast. The forecast
conditions will result in a LOW risk for the development of
dangerous rip currents on Thursday.

northwestern Warren, northeastern Monroe and northeastern Northampton
Counties through 445 PM EDT...

At 410 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near
Canadensis, or 9 miles east of Mount Pocono, moving southeast at 15
mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
         unsecured objects.

East Stroudsburg, Blairstown, Flatbrookville, Henryville, Werry Lake,
Analomink, Millbrook, Delaware Water Gap, Skytop, Mountainhome,
Canadensis, Alpine Mountain, Five Points, Columbia, Crandon Lakes,
