.SYNOPSIS...
Both a warm front and a mid level disturbance will move across the
area today. A Bermuda high pressure pattern will develop for
Saturday and Sunday. A strong cold front will move through Sunday
night as low pressure passes to our northwest, with the front slowly
settling offshore on Monday. High pressure builds in for Tuesday and
Wednesday, then a frontal system may approach the area later next
week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A Tornado Watch is now in effect for southeast Pennsylvania,
northern Delaware, and most of New Jersey until 7 pm EDT.
High temperatures today will get into the upper 70s to low 80s
in the southern Poconos, Lehigh Valley, and northern New Jersey,
and in the mid to upper 80s in southeast Pennsylvania, most of
New Jersey away from the shores, and into interior Delmarva.
Highs will be in the 70s along the coasts.
Currently, the bulk of the instability lies over Delmarva, but
SB CAPE values approaching 1000 J/kg are creeping up in the
Delaware Valley and southern New Jersey. By this afternoon, SB
CAPE values of 1500 to 2000 J/kg will spread northward. MCV
currently moving through western Pennsylvania and is quickly
racing east.
Otherwise, late this morning/ early this afternoon the warm
front will pull northward in response to the MCV to about/ or
just north of I-195 in NJ. The MCV will then turn more easterly
and track along the warm front. In the warm sector,
destabilization is forecast to occur with MLCAPE values of 1500
to 2500 J/kg. The main possible failure mode for convection this
afternoon will be the rapidly warming low level thermal
profiles. The latest forecast soundings off of the NAM and GFS
all show some version of capping in place across the area. The
overall strength of the CAP looks like it can be overcome given
the strength of the forcing for ascent. The most likely scenario
at this point appears to be convection maintaining itself
across central PA early this afternoon and quickly going linear
as anvil-level storm- relative flow vectors point southwest. The
convection is then forecast to turn more easterly, or into the
instability and down the warm front. Bulk shear vectors with the
convection are perpendicular to the orientation of the
convection at about 40 kts which makes damaging winds the
primary threat. An isolated tornado embedded in the line of
convection is also possible given the proximity of the warm
front. The convection looks like it will approach the Lehigh
Valley around 2 to 4 PM and quickly head east towards the NJ
coast. As the convection heads east it will encounter an
increasingly capped environment and begin to decay. The main
question here is how quickly will the convection weaken. In
these type of setups, convection usually weakens but doesn't
immediately collapse. Towards MD and DE, mostly dry weather is
expected as the forcing from the MCV will be just to the north.
Expect high temperatures mostly in the mid 80s today.
Tonight, convection from the afternoon and early evening will
be off the NJ coast with skies slowly clearing. Expect low
temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 60s across the area.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Saturday remains poised to easily be our hottest day of the season
so far. Very little change in the forecast philosophy for Saturday.
With H5 heights near 590 dam, 850 mb temperatures near to above
+20C, and near full sunshine, it will be a scorching hot day. High
temperatures in the mid to locally upper 90s are expected. Humidity
will be a factor as well. It will not be totally oppressive, and
some mixing out of dew points is likely in the afternoon with a bit
of drier air aloft. But the mid 60s dew points should still push
heat index values into the upper 90s to around 100 in most areas, a
little cooler in the Poconos, and also cooler at the coast due to a
slight onshore wind component.
Based on the forecast heat index values, a Heat Advisory has been
issued for portions of the area for Saturday. This includes the I-95
"urban corridor", which has a lower criteria than the rest of the
region at this point in the season. But the Advisory also includes
some areas outside the urban corridor where confidence is high in
getting heat index values at or at least very close to 100F. It does
seem like splitting hairs a bit to leave out areas such as the
Lehigh Valley or the remainder of northern New Jersey, but have to
give some deference to the established criteria. Regardless, it will
certainly be hot everywhere.
Low temperatures Saturday night will be notable as well. A light
southerly flow will continue, and dew points will hold steady, well
into the 60s. As a result, low temperatures will fail to drop below
70 in many places, providing little relief from the daytime heat.
Heading into Sunday, the cold front will approach, with a surface
low developing over upstate New York and northern New England,
helping to drag the front in our direction. The front still remains
to our west through the daytime Sunday, and as a result, it will be
another hot day. We see some slight height falls and more diurnal
cloud cover, so it will not be quite as hot as Saturday, but most
areas will return to the lower 90s with fairly humid conditions as
well. Another Heat Advisory may be needed for the urban corridor.
By late Sunday afternoon and through the early overnight, we will
watch for thunderstorm development ahead of the cold front. It does
appear that scattered to potentially widespread convection will
develop ahead of the front. While dynamics are not great with this
system overall, the high instability conditions could support some
strong to perhaps severe storms ahead of the front. Based on its
expected timing, the best chance for stronger storms may be west of
our area. But have tstms mentioned for most of the area for Sunday
afternoon and evening, with a chance for a strong storm especially
in the western zones. The further east you go, activity should be
both less intense and less widespread, with diminishing coverage
through the night. The front itself should slowly move through as
the night progresses. Cold advection won't really kick in until late
Sunday night, and mainly in western portions of the area. As a
result, it will be another mild night with lows in the low to mid
60s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Overview...
A much cooler pattern relative to the weekend heat develops for next
week. Synoptically, following the Sunday night cold frontal passage,
the upper level pattern does not change dramatically, with
considerable positive height anomalies remaining in place over the
East. However, an expansive surface high pressure center will build
from the Great Lakes into northern New England from Monday through
midweek. This will act to turn the winds northerly, then easterly,
drawing cooler air into the region despite the warmer look to the
upper air pattern. High temperatures into the 70s will be common for
much of next week, and "cooler coast" will be a common theme as well.
Regarding rain chances, the week does not appear too rainy overall.
Made some downward adjustments to NBM PoPs in the Monday through
Wednesday range based on latest guidance and the synoptic pattern of
strong high pressure to the north. This still leaves some mentions
of showers, but expect most if not all of the first half of the week
to be dry. Better rain chances should arrive later in the week as a
frontal system approaches in response to a slow moving trough
pushing into the Great Lakes.
Dailies...
Monday-Monday night... Most indications are that the cold front
should be offshore by Monday morning. However, it will be slowing
down as it moves through, and there is still a chance it comes to a
near stall over the coast or just offshore. As such, there is a
slight chance for some residual showers especially over the southern
half of the area, and a good deal of cloud cover may linger through
the day. But by and large, the story will be the more seasonable
temperatures, with daytime highs in the 70s and overnight lows in
the 50s.
Tuesday-Wednesday... Some additional cooling is expected into
midweek as high pressure centers itself to our north and turns the
winds onshore. High temperatures look to favor the low 70s on these
days, but only in the 60s closer to the coast. Do have a slgt chc of
showers mentioned Tuesday, but this is lower than NBM PoPs, and am
pretty strongly favoring a fully dry day Tuesday given the strong
high pressure to the north. On Wednesday, PoPs increase a little
more as a frontal system possibly begins to approach from the
southwest. But am still not too enthused on rain chances Wednesday
either, and have a feeling that day will probably be dry as well.
Thursday... By Thursday, a frontal system appears likely to approach
the area as a slow moving trough, and possibly a closed low, track
towards the Great Lakes. While confidence in details remains low,
the overall pattern should support an increase in rain potential by
the latter half of next week. Temperatures should start to recover
also by Thursday as a southwest flow develops, and we may get back
to around 80 in some places.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Friday...Showers and thunderstorms may move into portions of
the region between about 18-23z. Southerly winds increasing to
around 10 knots, with some gusts up to 20 knots especially at
ACY, MIV and ILG. Moderate confidence regarding shower/thunder
timing and coverage.
Friday night... VFR conditions overall, with some fog possible at
KTTN, KPNE, and KPHL. South winds around 5 kts.
Outlook...
Saturday-Saturday night... Mainly VFR. Some fog is possible near the
coast including ACY, especially Saturday morning. Southwest wind 5
to 10 kt. High confidence.
Sunday-Sunday night... Mainly VFR. Showers and tstms with localized
restrictions are possible from Sunday afternoon through much of the
night, especially from PHL westward. Southwest winds 5 to 10 kt with
gusts up to 20 kt Sunday, decreasing and shifting to northwest
Sunday night. Moderate confidence.
Monday-Monday night... Mainly VFR but some localized restrictions
possible. Northwest wind 5 to 10 kt gradually shifting to northeast
overnight. Moderate confidence.
Tuesday-Tuesday night... Mainly VFR. Northeast to east wind 5 to 10
kt, a little breezier at the coast. Moderate confidence.

across the ocean and lower DE Bay waters. VSBY reduced to 1 nm
or less. A Dense Fog Advisory is now in effect for those waters
through 10 pm. Showers and thunderstorms this evening may scour
out the fog for a bit, but dense fog may redevelop on the
waters once again later tonight.
Winds will be mostly out of the south today and increase in
speed with gusts up to 20 kts. Seas 2 to 3 ft. Showers and
thunderstorms are possible across the central and northern NJ
Atlantic facing waters.
Outlook...
Saturday-Tuesday... No marine headlines are currently
anticipated. Conditions may approach SCA levels on the ocean
waters on Sunday as south- southwest winds gust near to above 20
kt and seas approach 4 to 5 ft. Areas of fog will be possible
Saturday due to warmer air moving in over the colder waters.
Offshore winds through the weekend, becoming onshore Monday and
through midweek.
