.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure located across the western Atlantic will
circulate a southwesterly to westerly flow of hot and humid air
over the region through the weekend. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms will return Sunday and especially Monday as
a cold front approaches the area from the north. High pressure
behind the front will bring some relief from the heat early
next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Broad mid-level troughing will be in place through tonight with
the primary axis positioned to our west across the
Appalachians. At the surface, modest southwesterly return flow
will prevail through the day advecting higher dewpoints into the
region through the morning hours. A cold front, really just a
dewpoint gradient, will push into the region by mid-morning then
gradually work its way through the area during the afternoon.
The boundary will move offshore by late evening and stall just
south of the area around daybreak Friday.
The latest guidance suggests our area will remain largely rain-
free today. The area will be sandwiched between the best
forcing to the north over New England and the better instability
to the south. There will also be a dry slot pushing in with the
front, possibly even outrunning the front. These factors will
be working against convective initiation other than isolated
storms in north/northeastern New Jersey and across portions of
Delmarva where chance PoPs remain. The dry mid-level dry air in
place will result in rather high DCAPE values, so any
convection that is successful in maturing will be capable of
producing downbursts.
High temperatures this afternoon will be in the mid 90s, with
80s along the coast and in the mountains. With dewpoints in the
upper 60s to lower 70s, resulting Heat Indices will range from
the mid to upper 90s across our northwestern-most zones to the
low to mid 100s near and southeast of I-95. With the cold front
arriving from the northwest into the peak afternoon heating
hours, dewpoints are expected to mix out as daily maximums are
reached. The resulting heat indices will be a very delicate
balance between increasing temperatures and dewpoints mixing
out.
Another warm night is expected tonight, but dewpoints should
generally begin to fall. Low temperatures are expected to range
from the mid to upper 60s north of I-78 to the mid 70s near and
southeast of I-95.
Those escaping the heat and humidity at the New Jersey and
Delaware oceanfronts will be quite refreshed when stepping into
the surf. Ocean water temperatures have been hovering in the
low to mid 60s from Long Beach Island south to the Delaware
Beaches because of upwelling. Upwelling conditions should
continue as long as the surface winds remain parallel to the
coastline. Once the wind direction changes, upwelling will
dissipate and warmer ocean water will return to the beaches.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The key takeaway message for the short term continues to be the
oppressive heat and humidity forecast through Sunday.
The mid-level low will rotate across the southern Hudson Bay
helping to filter in drier mid and upper level air with PWATs
falling to just above 1.00" Friday morning. The drier air in
the column will allow for high temperatures to easily again
reach the mid 90s across most of the region. 1000/ 850 MB
thicknesses do decline a bit towards 1430 m on Friday compared
to the 1435 m forecast on Thursday, but it will still feel hot
Friday. Even with dewpoints mixing out into the mid 60s Friday,
heat index values around 100 degrees are again expected during
the afternoon. No precipitation is expected for most of the
area, with the one exception being across the northern zones. A
weak wave at 500 MB is forecast to head east across central PA
late Friday/ very early Saturday which cold produce isolated
showers and thunderstorms. SPC has the area in a Marginal Risk
for Friday night with the primary threat being damaging wind
gusts.
Saturday into Sunday temperatures will begin to climb each
progressive day with slightly less mixing also occurring each
successive afternoon. 1000/ 850 MB thicknesses on Saturday
climb to 1435 m and then potentially reach 1440 m Sunday. This
will make forecast high temperatures mostly in the mid to upper
90s on Saturday with mostly upper 90s to right around 100
degrees possible Sunday. By Sunday, heat index values will be
close to, or right at Excessive Heat Warning Criteria for the
Urban Corridor. The other important item of note here will be
the overnight low temperatures. Mainly lower to mid 70s are
forecast for Saturday morning with mid to upper 70s forecast
for Sunday morning. This will offer little in the way of relief
at night. No precipitation is expected Saturday, while some
showers and thunderstorms might work into the Poconos Sunday
afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Global ensembles are in good agreement that we will finally get a
brief break from the oppressive heat Tuesday and Wednesday as a cold
front slowly makes its way south across New England Monday. In
particular, the GEFS, GEPS, and EPS all show a closed low near the
James Bay slowly heading east Monday with another piece of PV diving
southeast on the backside of the closed low. This will help push the
front south (along with chances of showers and thunderstorms). By
the end of the long term, the close low will be east of the Canadian
Maritimes with heights rising across the region with temperatures
again climbing into the 90s.
Sunday night has the potential to be the warmest low temperature of
this stretch of oppressive heat with PHL possibly not dipping below
80 degrees. This is thanks to increasing cloud cover from the
approaching cold front. During the day Monday, the closed low near
the James Bay will dip south and slowly begin to head east. As this
occurs, a cold front will dive south across New England. Widespread
showers and thunderstorms are currently forecast along the cold
front as PWATs approach 2.00". The exact timing of the cold front
will end up dictating high temperatures Monday, with a faster frontal
passage favoring cooler highs and a slower frontal passage favoring
warmer temperatures. Either way, temperatures will likely be 5 to 10
degrees cooler Monday compared to Sunday (mostly lower 90s
forecast). Generally in these situations, favoring the slower
frontal progression during peak afternoon heating ends up being the
way to go.
Monday night the cold front will cross the zones and likely stall
somewhere across southern DE Tuesday afternoon. Behind the front,
temperatures will mostly be in the upper 80s with dewpoints in the
mid 60s. As noted at the beginning of the long term discussion,
global ensembles are in fairly good agreement in the extended, but
there is one slight important difference. The EPS has shown a
slightly further north track of the James Bay low and therefore
keeps precipitation across most of the region Tuesday. Taking a look
at the WPC cluster analysis reveals that the EPS and GEPS might be
slightly under-dispersive compared to the GEFS, but admittedly
appears to be a small difference in the synoptic scale.
Overall, the front stalling near the DELMARVA with precipitation
chances continuing across the central and southern zones
Tuesday into Wednesday appears the most likely solution.

shower or thunderstorm is possible. Surf temperatures from LBI
to Delaware Beaches early this afternoon are in the low to mid
60s because of upwelling.

possibly by the late afternoon hours. Seas 3 to 5 feet. A Small
