.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move across the Great Lakes towards the East Coast
today, dragging a cold front across the region tonight. The frontal
boundary will then meander to our south through the remainder of the
week as several waves of low pressure move along the front from the
Midwest. High pressure looks to build into the region late Saturday
into Sunday with another area of low pressure moving towards the
region into Tuesday next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A cold front will approach the region this evening, and then
will slowly work its way through the region late tonight and
into Wednesday morning. Ahead of that front, warm air advection
will be underway, and surface dew points will continue to creep
up into the 70s this evening. With a warm and humid airmass over
the area, there will be ample moisture for thunderstorms.
There are several areas of showers and thunderstorms currently
approaching potions of the forecast area. The first is a ribbon
of storms extending from central New York, southwest back
through south-central Pennsylvania and into Maryland. There is
also another area of stronger thunderstorms moving into the
eastern shores of Maryland, but the stronger storms associated
with that area are south of Delaware.
The highest MU CAPE values range from 500 to 1000 J/kg, and are
just west of New Jersey, snaking around southeast Pennsylvania
and down into Delmarva. Surface-based CAPE values are similar,
and follow a similar path. This is correlated with the warmest
temperatures and highest dew points. Consensus model guidance
has that area of showers and thunderstorms moving through
Pennsylvania and almost splitting as it approaches the Delaware
Valley. One area of storms takes a northern track towards the
southern Poconos and northern New Jersey, while another area
intensifies over the eastern shores of Maryland and Delmarva.
Although some thunderstorms will affect portions of the southern
Poconos and northern New Jersey, there is a higher potential
for severe weather in the southern zones due to the higher CAPE
values there. Hi-res guidance models are fairly consistent with
storms intensifying here. Day 1 SPC Convective Outlook has a
Slight Risk for severe weather mainly poking into the eastern
shores of Maryland. Heavy rain and damaging winds are possible.
Storms should taper off by midnight or so. Warm and humid
tonight with lows generally in the 70s. Fog likely to develop.
Cold front passes through the region between 6 am and 8 am or
so. Skies clear out. There is not much cold air behind the
front, but there is some drier air in the form of lower dew
points. Highs will be in the 80s to low 90s (cooler in the
southern Poconos), and surface dew points will drop into the 60s
most of southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but will remain
in the lower 70s in Delmarva.
Another disturbance approaches Wednesday afternoon, and will
dive towards the area of greatest instability, which will be
Delmarva once again.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
For Wednesday night, a frontal boundary is expected to be
stalled across the area through the urban corridor and west into
southeast Pennsylvania and east across the northern New Jersey
coast. Meanwhile, surface high pressure will begin ridging in
from the northeast overnight. This will turn the mean surface
flow to a predominately easterly direction into Thursday.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will probably be lingering near
and/or south of the boundary Wednesday night. The predictability in
this time frame is low given the high uncertainty in the forecast
from the daytime period on Wednesday. PWats will be high (around
2"). So while severe thunderstorms are unlikely, any lingering
convection could certainly produce some locally heavy rainfall and
thus there may be a localized flash flood risk. Low temperatures
will range from the low 70s near and southeast of I-95 to the low
60s near and north of I-80. The air will be quite muggy near and
south of the boundary overnight.
Thursday looks more interesting as this frontal boundary nudges
northward in the wake of a departing surface high from the New
England Coast. A similar trend with several vort maxes and MCS
features rolling along the front. Several models, particularly the
NAM, continues to bring the remnants of one of these features
directly over our region late Thursday morning and into the
afternoon. Other hi-res guidance are just beginning to move into
this time range, though they appear much less robust as of now.
Should the front and this wave trend north over our region,
instability will be quite favorable, it is just a matter of how far
north the front lifts. A pretty sharp gradient in instability and
moisture looks to set up over the warm front with up to 3000 J/kg of
MUCAPE and PWats over 2" to its south. As with Wednesday night,
Thursday could also end up being more of a flash flood type of day
rather than severe (or perhaps both), but these details remain to be
seen. Maintaining chance PoPs over the area for now until we get a
better idea of where things set up. High Thursday should trend
cooler with increase cloud cover and/or precipitation coverage in
the low 80s. Lows Thursday night will be around 70 degrees in most
areas and in the mid 60s north of I-78. It'll be another muggy
summer night.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A weak surface low looks to form offshore as a front shifts offshore
Friday. This system appears quite probable to bring widespread
showers and thunderstorms to the area and thus I've maintained the
high end chance to low end likely PoPs. High pressure looks to build
into the region and push this front south and east of the region,
though it slow in the process. There is a chance some of these
showers may linger into Saturday morning across portions of
Delmarva, but most of the are should stay largely dry. High pressure
then gradually shifts just north of the region from the Great Lakes
and over New England with a shortwave trough and associated surface
low and cold front moving towards the region by Tuesday. Highs look
to sit a few degrees below average in the low to mid 80s through
this period.

IFR. MVFR VSBYs possible as well in fog. light S to SW winds
overnight, turning NW by 12Z. Improvements to VFR possible by
10Z. Moderate confidence overall.
Wednesday (12Z through 00Z)...VFR. W to NW winds around 10 kt.
Isolated -SHRA/-TSRA across Delmarva and extreme southern New
Jersey. Moderate confidence.

Wednesday night...Mainly VFR with areas of fog possible,
especially south of PHL. Scattered showers and thunderstorms

A south wind is forecast to increase to 15 to 20 MPH along the
coasts of Delaware and New Jersey today. Breaking waves are expected
to be 2 to 3 feet with a medium period southeast swell. We will
continue to carry a MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous
rip currents for the beaches of New Jersey. We will keep the
risk LOW for our Delaware beaches.
A west wind around 10 MPH is anticipated to back toward the south on
Wednesday. Breaking waves should be 1 to 2 feet with a medium period
southeast to south swell. There is a LOW risk for rip currents at
that time.
