What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Jul 19, 4:00 AM EDT, 3 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 19, 4:00 AM EDT, 3 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
400 AM EDT Tue Jul 19 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
A frontal boundary will stall out across the Delmarva peninsula
today then lift north as a warm front on Wednesday. This will
result in a period of hot and humid conditions across the region
Wednesday and Thursday. A cold front will approach the area
late Thursday then pass offshore Thursday night. High pressure
located across the western Atlantic will then dominate the
pattern into the weekend with chances of showers and
thunderstorms returning by Sunday and especially Monday as
another cold front approaches the area from the north.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A weak surface cold front is currently progressing east through the
Lehigh Valley this morning and will reach the NJ coast just after
sunrise. Behind the cold front, temperatures will remain seasonably
warm, with only slightly drier air. The main difference behind the
cold front will be the much drier air in the mid and upper levels of
the atmosphere as PWATs fall from around 2.00" to near 1.25". The
front doesn't look like it will completely clear the DELMARVA
though, and will stall near Sussex county DE. This means most of the
region will remain dry today, with the exception possibly being
across southern DELMARVA. Have kept a mention of PoPs across the
south to account for this.

High temperatures today are forecast to be rather similar to
yesterday (Monday) as 850 MB temperatures cool only by about a
degree or two (16/ 17 degrees C), while 1000/ 850 MB thicknesses
hold around 1425 m. Expect widespread low 90s for high temperatures
today (mid 80s across the Poconos).

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Hot and humid conditions are expected Wednesday through Thursday.
Mid-level ridging across the area early Wednesday will be quickly
followed by troughing arriving from the west into Thursday. At the
surface, the stalled frontal boundary across Delmarva will lift
north as a warm front early Wednesday. Modest southwesterly return
flow will then prevail through Thursday advecting warmer
temperatures and dewpoints into the region. A cold front, really
just a dewpoint gradient, will approach the area late Thursday.
Guidance seems generally too progressive with this boundary given
the lack of any considerably cooler air in its wake. In any case, it
should make its way toward the coast overnight.

Wednesday will feature high temperatures in the low to mid 90s just
about everywhere in the forecast area, save for the southern Poconos
and immediate coastline where highs in the mid 80s can be expected.
Dewpoints are expected to climb into the upper 60s to low 70s within
the southwesterly flow warm advection regime. This will result in
Heat Indices in the upper 90s to low 100s into the afternoon hours
across much of the area. A Heat Advisory has been issued for
portions of the Urban Corridor and New Jersey. Aside from the heat,
Wednesday will be dry with fair weather cumulus developing into the
afternoon.

A very warm night is anticipated Wednesday night as radiational
cooling will be limited amid the warm advection regime and dewpoints
creeping into the low to mid 70s across much of the area. Expecting
lows in the mid too upper 70s, which will not provide any relief
from the hot and humid conditions during the day Wednesday.

On Thursday, the mid-level trough and associated frontal boundary
will be approaching the area from the west. As previously mentioned,
I suspect the guidance is too progressive with this feature. While
hot and humid conditions are expected again for Thursday, the big
question is how much convection and cloud cover there will be as the
day progresses. The latest guidance suggests our area will remain
largely dry with only cumulus developing. The area will be
sandwiched between the best forcing to the north and the better
instability to the south. Given this disconnect, I suspect most
areas will remain dry on Thursday. I have generally trended PoPs
downward overall, but there is still a chance for some isolated
storms to develop into the afternoon. I have maintained at least
slight chance PoPs everywhere.

Another warm night is expected for Thursday night, but dewpoints
should generally begin to fall. Low temperatures are expected to
range from the mid 60s north of I-78 to the mid 70s near and
southeast of I-95.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A mostly zonal flow pattern is anticipated Friday through Monday
with a Bermuda High located across the western Atlantic. The post-
frontal airmass on Friday will still be a hot one, just with lower
dewpoints. We should remain mostly below any heat headline criteria,
but it will still be hot with high temperatures in the low to mid
90s expected through at least Sunday. Many areas will likely
experience 7 days in a row of 90 degrees or hotter. Chances for
showers and storms will return Sunday and especially by Monday as
the next system approaches from the north. An approaching cold front
bringing convection and increasing cloud cover in the region should
begin to provide some relief from the heat into early next week.
