.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will shift offshore tonight. A warm front will cross
the region Sunday morning, followed by a cold front Sunday evening,
as an area of low pressure tracks far to our northwest. An Arctic
cold front will then cross the region late Monday, with strong
Arctic high pressure building in for Tuesday. High pressure will
generally dominate the remainder of the week, with a chance for a
frontal system to approach next weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Evening forecast mainly on track. Will make some minor
adjustments to the hourly temperatures, but no significant
changes overall.
Otherwise, a tricky forecast for the next 24 hours, as a
midlevel perturbation moves in from the southwest overnight. A
predecessor surface ridge is in place this afternoon along the
East Coast, which has really acted to diminish the surface
winds. The stage is set for a rapid cooldown after sunset. With
light and variable winds continuing and little cloudiness to
limit radiational cooling, temperatures will plummet this
evening. Dew points were lower than guidance this afternoon and
likely will remain so this evening, and the snowpack remains in
virtually all of the CWA. Given these factors, forecast lows
tonight are several degrees below guidance.
Hourly temperatures will begin to level off late this evening and
should begin a slow climb after midnight, as warm/moist advection
commences in advance of the aforementioned perturbation. This will
develop a strong warm nose aloft, allowing for precipitation to melt
before reaching the surface once it moves into the region.
Meanwhile, temperatures will be quite cold at the surface. Thermal
profiles are very favorable for sleet (initially) and freezing rain
(once surface temperatures sufficiently warm) near/northwest of the
I-95 corridor by daybreak. It may be difficult for precipitation to
reach the surface initially (given the low dew points observed this
afternoon), and this will only act to keep temperatures lower for
longer once precipitation begins. Thus, expect a few hours of
freezing rain and/or sleet in virtually all of southeast
Pennsylvania, northern/central New Jersey, and far northern Delaware.
Unlike most warming winter precipitation events in our area, this
one will begin from the deep freeze. This means that the impacts of
freezing rain will likely be virtually immediate. Hazardous travel
may develop very quickly once precipitation begins, which will be
important to message for this event. Additionally, did expand the
advisory to New Castle County (despite lower confidence on icing
this far south), given the potential quick impacts to travel on the
I-95 corridor in northern Delaware should freezing rain occur.
Ice accumulations will likely range from a few hundredths of an inch
to a tenth or two in the advisory area. Locally higher amounts are
possible in the Poconos, where temperatures may not reach freezing
even by late afternoon. Precipitation may become drizzle by
afternoon, which will not impede ice accretion. However, a
changeover to pure drizzle and/or very light snow/flurries is
probable late in the day as stronger cooling aloft begins while
temperatures approach freezing near the surface. Temperatures in the
rest of the area should climb safely above freezing by mid
afternoon, with plain rain expected thereafter.
Finally, conditions will become fairly breezy during the afternoon,
as an intense surface low translates across eastern Canada,
increasing the pressure gradient in much of the Northeast. Southwest
winds may gust 20 to 25+ mph. Not a particularly pleasant day, to
say the least.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A sharp trend to much colder temperatures is expected to begin the
new week. Initially, on Sunday night, we will still be dealing with
light rain across much of the area as a cold front gradually works
its way offshore. This rain will end from west to east through the
night. Colder air will be working its way in behind the front, and
we will fall into the 20s overnight. As colder air moves in, it will
be chasing down the back edge of precipitation as the departing
front takes on more anafrontal characteristics. So there is a low
chance that rain could end as a few snowflakes, but usually in these
cases the cold air doesn't catch up the precipitation quite fast
enough for that to happen.
Thanks to the frontal passage, Monday will be a cold day, with highs
mostly in the low 30s, and colder wind chills thanks to a steady
northwest breeze. However, this is still not the true Arctic air.
That won't arrive until a reinforcing Arctic front crosses the
region during the evening. Just ahead of the front, we'll still have
to watch for snow squall potential Monday evening. While the overall
setup does match the conceptual model of a typical snow squall day,
right now it still doesn't look like this will be too much of a
problem. The boundary layer looks a bit too dry, and while diurnal
timing isn't everything when it comes to squalls, the front will
come through later than what is typically the most favorable time of
day for snow squalls. Northern areas should be most favored for any
activity, and did at least add a mention of a slgt chc of snow
showers northwest of the I-95 corridor. Will still be good to see
the CAMs once they get into range also.
Behind the Arctic front, Monday night lows will drop well down into
the 10s, with some single digits up north. Winds will prevent the
numbers from going any lower, but will also cause wind chills to
drop to near zero in many spots by late in the night, colder across
the north.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Overview...
A deep freeze early in the week will give way to some moderation by
mid to late week as a more zonal mid-level flow pattern develops.
Overall, with the exception of the notably cold temperatures through
Tuesday, the long term continues to look mostly uneventful. High
pressure looks to control the pattern for the most part. There are
some indications for an ocean storm to develop later in the week,
but if that were to happen, it looks like it would remain far
offshore. A frontal system may approach the area towards next
weekend, but this is also uncertain.
Dailies...
Tuesday-Tuesday night... The cold air remains the big story for
Tuesday. Little change to the forecast for this period, with
guidance locked in on a lobe of pure Arctic air rotating through the
region. 850 mb temperatures drop to around -20C, reaching their
coldest during the peak heating hours, which will support high
temperatures only in the upper 10s to low 20s. And with the cold
advection continuing, northwest winds will remain breezy, gusting
over 20 mph. Wind chill values will struggle to get above 10, and
likely won't get above 0 in the Poconos. A Wind Chill Advisory may
be needed in the Poconos for the morning. Overnight, we see the
coldest air temperatures of the stretch as winds ease, with lows
dropping into the single digits and low 10s. Most of the guidance
has trended slightly warmer for the overnight lows, possibly due to
an earlier onset of warm advection aloft. However, still would not
be surprised if we radiate better than expected and end up a few
degrees colder. It will be a frigid night regardless.
Wednesday-Thursday... High pressure shifts off to our southeast on
Wednesday, which will help a southwesterly flow pattern to develop.
This will lead to significant temperature moderation versus Tuesday,
with highs jumping 10 to 15 degrees, though still failing to get to
average. By Thursday, we will get back close to average, with many
areas returning to the low 40s. One or two moisture-starved northern
stream shortwaves may bring an occasional snow shower risk to the
far northern zones during the midweek period, but overall, these
look like dry days.
Friday-Saturday... Little change in temperatures versus Thursday,
and continued mainly dry weather, is expected. By Saturday,
precipitation chances, either rain or snow, may increase as a
frontal system evolves to our west or southwest. But guidance is
naturally not yet in good agreement on this, and it will be a few
days before next weekend's forecast is well-resolved.

.AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Tonight...VFR. CIGs developing and lowering with time. Light S
winds. SW LLWS will develop at I-95 corridor terminals and
terminals south and east after 10Z. Light freezing rain,
possibly mixed with light sleet may occur at RDG/ABE by 12Z.
Moderate confidence.
Sunday...Gradually deteriorating CIGs/VSBYs during the day,
with MVFR/IFR possible after 18z (from northwest to southeast).
Light freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet initially, through
18z or so at RDG/ABE. Mostly light rain expected at the Philly
terminals, ACY, and MIV (mainly after 15z)...though cannot rule
out a brief period of freezing rain at the Philly terminals in
the morning. SW LLWS likely through 18z, with surface winds
increasing to 10 to 15 kt by afternoon (gusts 20-25 kt
possible). Moderate confidence.
Outlook...
Sunday night... Improving conditions are expected. Any terminals
that begin the night sub-VFR will improve to VFR as the night
progresses, mainly before 06z, with areas near MIV and ACY last to
see improvement. A wind shift from southwest to northwest is
expected early in the night as a cold front passes, with speeds
increasing to 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt behind the front.
Monday-Tuesday... VFR with northwest flow, although it may be more
westerly during the day on Monday. Speeds generally 10 to 15 kt with
gusts 20 to 25 kt. Some briefly higher gusts are possible. High
confidence.
Tuesday night... VFR. Winds quickly turning light and variable. High
confidence.
Wednesday-Wednesday night... VFR. Winds becoming southwest at 5 to
10 kt, then decreasing overnight. High confidence.
Thursday-Thursday night... VFR. Light northwest winds. Moderate
confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Sub-advisory conditions are expected overnight, with southwest winds
increasing to 10 to 20 kt after midnight. Advisory conditions are
expected to commence on the Atlantic waters after daybreak, with
southwest winds increasing to 20 to 30 kt and seas building to
around 5 feet. Cannot rule out a few gale-force gusts off the New
Jersey coast, but conditions look too brief/marginal for issuance of
a gale warning. Instead, a small craft advisory begins at 6 am for
the Atlantic waters. For Delaware Bay, at least marginal small-craft
advisory conditions are expected on Sunday, with southwest winds
gusting to 25 kt or so, especially near the mouth of the bay.
Rain is expected on Sunday, mostly in the late morning through the
afternoon hours. Some visibility restrictions are possible during
the afternoon.
Outlook...
Sunday night... SCA conditions will continue, with a wind shift from
southwest to northwest early in the night behind a front. The
northwest winds will gust to around 30 kt, with a chance for
gale force gusts. Seas 4 to 6 ft.
Monday... SCA conditions will continue at least through the morning
as northwest winds gust 25 to 30 kt. Winds may subside below SCA
levels during the afternoon, especially on Delaware Bay. Seas 3 to 4
ft.
Monday night-Tuesday... A new round of marine headlines is expected
due to gusty northwest winds behind another cold front. Gusts look
to stay mainly in the SCA range, but may again be near gale force
late Monday night and Tuesday morning. Seas 3 to 4 ft. Freezing
spray is also likely during this period, mainly on Delaware Bay and
in the nearshore Atlantic coastal waters where water temperatures
are cold enough to support it. Freezing Spray Advisories may be
needed.
Tuesday night... Winds should subside below SCA levels and begin
shifting to southwest. Seas 2 to 3 ft.
Wednesday-Thursday... No marine headlines are currently anticipated
with generally light winds and seas thanks to high pressure.
