Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
320 AM EST Sun Nov 13 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure departs this morning, and then Canadian high
pressure builds through the region tonight through Tuesday. A
coastal low will impact the area Tuesday night through
Wednesday, and then Canadian high pressure returns to close out
next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A fairly potent mid-level shortwave trough axis located across
the Ohio Valley early this morning and an associated jet streak
will push across our area through tonight. Cold high pressure
will build to our west through tonight as a cold front departs
offshore. This will be the beginning of a long duration period
of below normal temperatures likely lasting into the week of
Thanksgiving.

Some difluence aloft has resulted in some scattered showers
across the area early this morning in the wake of the cold front
pushing offshore. The main show appears to be exiting the area,
although additional development is depicted by the latest hi-
res guidance. Any lingering shower activity is expected to push
out of the area just after daybreak. I have maintained the PoPs
as previously forecast along with some adjustments to the
timing.

A much cooler airmass is advecting into the region compared to
the one brought to the region by Nicole over the past couple
days. Temperatures will be about 20 degrees colder than
Saturday. Even after the morning showers depart the area, some
broken cloud cover may linger into the afternoon, especially
along and north of I-78. A few rain or snow showers are possible
in the southern Poconos this afternoon. Northwest winds will
continue to prevail around 10-15 mph with gusts to around 25-30
mph. Expect highs mostly in the upper 40s northwest of I-95 to
low 50s southeast of I-95, although the breezy conditions will
make it feel a bit cooler.

Temperatures will fall well into the 30s tonight with some mid
to upper 20s getting into the Poconos, eastern Pennsylvania, and
northwest New Jersey. Cold advection will be continuing
overnight, so winds should stay up around 5-10 mph with wind
chills in the 20s (10s in the higher elevations). The winds and
elevated dewpoint depressions will preclude any frost formation,
however portions of Delmarva, the urban corridor, and
surrounding suburbs will likely experience their first freeze if
not coming within a degree or two of it. The Freeze Watch has
been upgraded to a Freeze Warning for all remaining zones where
the growing season continues for tonight with low temperatures
forecast to range from around 30 to 33 degrees.

Any areas, especially inland, that do not experience a freeze
tonight will likely have a freeze Monday night as well,
including Philadelphia proper and adjacent urban areas. Our
Frost/Freeze program will end on Tuesday, November 15th and thus
no additional Frost/Freeze headlines will be issued after then.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure builds in from the west on Monday and crosses the
region Monday night before departing on Tuesday. Temperatures
will be several degrees below normal through the period, with
highs only in the 40s on Monday. Clear skies, light winds, and a
cold, dry airmass will set the stage for excellent radiational
cooling conditions Monday night with lows dropping into the 20s
across most of the region, and in the 30s along the coasts. Some
frost is possible, though the growing season should be over for
most, if not all, areas by then.

An upper trough will dig through the region during this time,
and surface low pressure develops on the Gulf Coast. This low
then tracks to the north and east on Tuesday before intensifying
and developing Tuesday night. Meanwhile, another area of low
pressure tracks through the Great Lakes and moves into the Ohio
Valley by Tuesday night.

Though Tuesday starts out dry, some rain will spread into
southwest portions of the forecast area late in the day. Highs
on Tuesday will be similar, perhaps a couple of degrees warmer,
especially near the coasts, to Monday. The bulk of the precip
holds off until Tuesday night.

Coastal low pressure intensifies as it tracks towards and along
the New Jersey coast Tuesday night. Low pressure over the Ohio
Valley will move into western New York and western Pennsylvania
and merge with the coastal low. There are differences among the
00Z/13 GFS, the 00Z/13 ECMWF, and the 00Z/13 NAM in terms of
timing, placement, and strength of the low. One thing is that
temperatures, especially aloft, seem to be a bit warmer than
previous runs. Although for the majority of the forecast area
there are no ptype issues, as precip will be all rain, there are
concerns for wintry precip in at least the southern Poconos,
and possibly down into the Lehigh Valley.

First concern is with the onset of precip. Although there may
be a brief period of rain, precip mixes with and changes to snow
at least in Carbon and Monroe counties, but a wintry mix is
possible through the Lehigh Valley, far northwest New Jersey,
and down to the Fall Line. With low pressure lifting closer, a
surge of warmer air aloft will allow for precip to change to
plain rain in the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey.
However, surface temperatures remain cold enough in Carbon and
Monroe counties to allow for a period of sleet and freezing rain
from after midnight Wednesday through the early morning hours.
There is the potential for an inch or so of snow before the
change over, and then a glaze of ice. Again, there are too many
inconsistencies among the models to definitively say, so will
see how models trend over the next couple of days.

An inch or so of rain is possible for portions of Delaware and
coastal New Jersey.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Low pressure departs on Wednesday, and precip ends over the
western half of the forecast area fairly quickly in the morning,
but precip should linger over the eastern half through at least
Wednesday afternoon. Behind the departing low, there may be a
surge of colder air, and breezy northwest winds will develop
behind the low.

Canadian high pressure then builds in from the west to close
out the week. Temperatures will be well below normal. After
highs in the 40s and low 50s on Wednesday, Highs will only be in
the 30s and low 40s Thursday through Saturday. Lows Wednesday
night will be in the 20s and low 30s, and then will be in the
20s Thursday through Saturday.

Normal highs for this time of year are in the mid 50s and
normal lows are in the mid 30s.

&&

.AVIATION /08Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through 15Z...VFR ceilings should prevail at most terminals,
however MVFR ceilings are probable at ABE, TTN, PNE, and ACY.
MVFR ceilings have been included in these TAFs, but confidence
on the occurrence and progression of any restrictions is low.
Visibility will remain VFR with scattered showers moving through
the area. Winds northwest around 5-10 kts, although a few gusts
around 20 kts are possible. Moderate confidence overall.

Remainder of Today...VFR ceilings scattering out as the day
progresses. Northwest winds 10-15 kts with gusts around 20-25
kts. High confidence.

Tonight...VFR/SKC. Winds diminishing to 5-10 kts after 00Z. High
confidence.

Outlook...

Monday through Monday night...VFR. NW winds 5 to 10 kt during
the day, becoming NE 5 kt or less at night. High confidence.

Tuesday through Tuesday night...VFR during the day. IFR and
possibly lower conditions in rain at most terminals, but
rain/snow at KRDG/KABE Tuesday evening. Precip should change to
plain rain after midnight. E winds 5 to 10 kt during the day,
becoming NE 10 to 15 kt at night. Low confidence.

Wednesday through Wednesday night...Rain tapers off from west
to east in the morning, but may linger at KACY into the
afternoon. Conditions improve to VFR. N winds 5 to 10 kt,
becoming NW 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt in the afternoon,
then W less than 10 kt at night. Moderate confidence.

Thursday...VFR. NW winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt.
Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Small Craft Advisory conditions will continue through much of
the daytime today and through at least early tonight. Northwest
winds around 15-20 kts Sunday with gusts up to 30 kts lingering
through late Sunday evening, then diminishing to around 10-15
kts overnight. Seas 4-5 feet will diminish to around 2-4 feet
overnight. A few showers this morning, otherwise fair weather.

Outlook...

Monday through Tuesday...NW winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20
kt Monday turn NE Monday night, then become E 5 to 10 kt on
Tuesday. Seas 2 to 3 feet.

Tuesday night through Wednesday...E winds increase to 10 to 15
kt with gusts to 25 kt possible Tuesday night, then become NW 15
to 20 kt with gusts to 25 kt Wednesday as coastal low pressure
passes through the waters and departs. VSBY restrictions in rain
Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. SCA will likely be
needed Wednesday.

Thursday...NW winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts 25 to 30 kt. Seas
around 5 feet. A SCA may be needed.
