.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain in place well north of the area with a
stacked low pressure system centered offshore of Nova Scotia through
Saturday. This will result in prevailing breezy and dry conditions
along with gradually moderating temperatures. Low pressure will
cross the Great Lakes on Sunday eventually bringing the potential
for showers to the Mid-Atlantic along with warmer temperatures. This
will start a generally much more unsettled weather pattern through
much of next week with multiple systems potentially impacting the
area.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A vertically stacked surface and upper level low pressure system
will slowly drift eastward from the Gulf of Maine today and tonight.
High pressure will be in place over the Great Lakes. Our region will
be squarely within the fairly tight pressure gradient between these
synoptic features, which will lead to gusty northwest winds the
rest of today. BUFKIT profiles support sustained winds of 15 to
25 mph with gusts over 30 mph. The northwest flow will also
continue to draw unseasonably cool air into the region. Large
scale subsidence and a very dry column should preclude much if
any cloud cover today, so sunny conditions will continue this
afternoon. Surface temperatures will still only struggle into
the mid to maybe upper 50s, impressively cool considering the
full effect of the strong late April sun.
The main concern for today will be the fire weather conditions,
which is covered in more detail below. Outdoor burning is strongly
discouraged today (and tomorrow), and particularly high levels of
caution should be used with any potential ignition sources over the
course of this multi-day fire weather event.
Overnight, continued cool and breezy conditions are expected, though
winds will drop off quite a bit after sunset and will be lighter
overall tonight versus last night. Low temperatures in the 30s are
again expected, setting up another marginal freeze situation for
some areas, mainly northwest of the urban corridor. Went a little on
the warm side of consensus which keeps temperatures mainly above
freezing outside of the Poconos. Most models were several degrees
too cold on Wednesday night due to the breezy conditions and
considerable cloud cover. However, with clear skies expected
tonight, am a little more concerned about freeze potential, and we
will have to monitor closely for a possible Freeze Warning, though
it will be close either way. Winds and dry air should again preclude
any frost formation.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A vertically stacked low pressure system will remain centered just
offshore of Nova Scotia through Saturday then will gradually start
moving out over the open Atlantic Saturday night. With cold and dry
high pressure ridging down toward the region from the Hudson Bay
region, a modest pressure gradient will remain in place Friday
through Saturday. Upper ridging building into the Great Lakes region
will keep strong subsidence in place across the area through the
period and fair weather and clear skies are expected Friday through
Saturday night.
Temperatures Friday should warm into the low 60s in most places with
mid to upper 50s in the higher terrain. A modest surface pressure
gradient will remain in place across the area on Friday,
particularly across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Resulting winds
will be around 15-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph (up to 35 mph gusts
across the higher terrain of eastern Pennsylvania and northwest New
Jersey). Very high dewpoint depressions will result in uncomfortably
low relative humidity values around 15-20% in most areas by the
afternoon hours.
Forecast BUFKIT profiles indicate the boundary layer should finally
decouple Friday night, but the lingering gradient should prevent
temperatures from tanking despite the high dewpoint depressions.
Winds will remain from the northwest around 5 mph overnight.
Forecast low temperatures will once again be in the 30s across the
entire area, but will be primarily in the mid to upper 30s outside
of the southern Poconos. The typical cold spots across the Lehigh
Valley and northwest New Jersey will probably make it down to near
or just below freezing, but widespread freezing temperatures do not
appear likely at this time. Dewpoint depressions will be too high to
promote frost development. A freeze is likely across the southern
Poconos however, but the Frost/Freeze program does not begin there
until May 1st (Saturday night/Sunday morning). Long story short, no
frost/freeze headlines are anticipated for Friday night.
On Saturday, further modification of the airmass is expected despite
northwest winds 10-15 mph continuing. High temperatures are expected
to be mostly in the mid 60s. With the weakening gradient, a sea
breeze is likely to develop into the afternoon, so the coastal areas
will likely experience their daily maximum temperature in the
morning. The lessening winds and slightly warmer temperatures will
make for a generally more pleasant day, but high dewpoint
depressions will once again result in low relative humidity values
around 20-25%. So the dry air will be fairly unpleasant.
After a few consecutive days of flirting with the freezing mark in
many areas, Saturday night could end up posing a more sneaky
frost/freeze threat. Forecast BUFKIT profiles indicate the boundary
layer will decouple again, but recovering dewpoints will result in
much more favorable dewpoint depressions for dew/frost development.
Winds will become light and variable overnight. Forecast low
temperatures will be tricky, but are currently expected to range
from the mid 30s to around 40 degrees in much of the interior areas.
Deterministic guidance varies on the degree of radiational cooling
the area will experience, but it does generally tend to be too
conservative in these setups. Low temperatures near freezing may
warrant a Freeze headline for the southern Poconos since this will
be the first night that the Frost/Freeze program begins there. I
have added a mention of frost to the forecast where frost
development appears most probable at this time (temperatures in the
mid 30s or lower. Long story short, frost/freeze headlines could be
needed in some areas for Saturday night.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A change in the synoptic weather pattern is anticipated into the
long term period, especially into the middle of next week and
beyond. Temperatures will return to seasonable ranges with highs
generally in the upper 60s to mid 70s in many areas and lows in the
mid 40s to mid 50s. The synoptic pattern looks to turn more
progressive with less blocking, and thus a bit more active. The
deterministic guidance is not in a good consensus at this time
regarding any details of the upcoming upper waves, but there are a
few periods that look favorable for showers and potentially some
thunderstorm activity. These are mainly Sunday night through Monday
and Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night. Have kept with a blend
of guidance for this period.

Outlook...
Friday...The Small Craft Advisory was extended (hopefully for the
last time) for all coastal waters through Friday afternoon.
Northwest winds around 15-20 kts will continue gusting around 25 kts
during this period. Seas 3-5 feet early will diminish to 2-3 feet
late.
Friday night through Monday night...No marine headlines are
anticipated. Northwesterly winds 10-15 kts will diminish a bit
Friday night and become southerly late Saturday. Winds will then
generally prevail from the south to southeast around 10-15 kts
through Monday night. Showers likely Sunday night. Seas 2-3 feet.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A multi-day stretch of dry and breezy conditions is expected today
and Friday, gradually easing up by Saturday. We are likely to be at
or near meteorological red flag thresholds both today and Friday,
especially today when the criteria will certainly be met all across
the region. Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of 25 to 35
mph will be likely today, decreasing somewhat on Friday but only
modestly. Dew points will mix out significantly during the daytimes,
with minimum RH values of 15 to 25 percent both Thursday and Friday.
Relatively poor RH recoveries are expected Thursday night also, with
max RH values on either side of 50 percent. Limiting factors for
this event will be the relatively cool temperatures as well as the
increasing progression of the spring green-up. However, state
partners have generally confirmed that fine fuels are expected to be
receptive across our area. As a result, a Red Flag Warning has been
issued for the entire area today.
A Fire Weather Watch also remains in effect for our NJ and PA
counties on Friday, and warning upgrades will likely be needed.
In DE and MD, sustained wind criteria are less likely to be met
on Friday, but there is a good chance at least a Special Weather
Statement will be required due to the increasingly dry and
still breezy conditions. Fire weather concerns should subside
over the weekend, especially by Sunday, as winds decrease. The
risk may remain somewhat elevated on Saturday due to warming
temperatures and continued dry conditions, but winds will be
lighter.
