What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at May 6, 1:54 AM EDT, 1 hour 38 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, May 6, 1:54 AM EDT, 1 hour 38 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
154 AM EDT Fri May 6 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure shifts farther out to sea overnight. Low pressure
then approaches from the west on Friday. It eventually passes
well south of the area Saturday and lingers off the Mid Atlantic
coast on Sunday before gradually drifting south through the
middle of next week. Meanwhile, high pressure will remain
anchored across northern New England.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
The forecast remains on track, with only minor updates to the
hourly forecast database with respect to temperatures, dew
points, and sky conditions to better capture current conditions.
High pressure centered to our east will shift farther out to sea
overnight. Meanwhile, a broad area of low pressure stretching
from the Lower MS Valley to the Ohio Valley approaches from the
west. Clouds lower and thicken through the night with rain
likely holding off - only a low chance that rain reaches west of
the Hudson towards daybreak. The cloud cover will help low
temperatures end up slightly above normal.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
An extended period of rain is expected from Friday through Saturday
night as a cut-off low aloft meanders toward the mid-Atlantic Coast.
The associated surface low remains broad as it heads east, emerging
off the Mid-Atlantic coast Saturday afternoon into evening, then
meandering not too far off the coast through Sunday as it attempts
to become more consolidated. Along with this, high pressure to the
north will slowly strengthen and sink south. This will increase the
pressure gradient across the region and create an area of
deformation near the forecast area, enhancing lift over the area
Friday night into Saturday.
Rain becomes likely west to east through the day on Friday with rain
chances increasing further during Friday night with stronger
frontogenesis and a developing low level jet. This appears to be the
period with the steadiest and heaviest rainfall. For Saturday, lift
weakens somewhat and PWATs diminish due to high pressure building in
from the north. Rain is still expected, but probably lighter and not
as steady. High pressure continues to build in slowly from the north
Saturday night, suppressing moisture and lowering rain chances
through the night. Hydrologic impacts are expected to be limited.
See the hydrology sections below.
The short term period will also feature breezy conditions due to the
increase in pressure gradient over the period. Winds on Friday and
most of Friday night will still be mostly below 15 mph, but ENE
winds begin to ramp up late at night through the day Saturday,
remaining at 15-25 mph and gusts of around 30-35 mph Saturday night
with the highest winds across coastal areas. Models have been
trending stronger with winds during Saturday and Saturday night, and
there is a chance that a wind advisory could eventually be needed
for coastal areas during that time.
The rain and clouds will hold high temps Friday and Saturday below
normal. Highs on Saturday only in the low 50s.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Low pressure will linger along the Mid Atlantic coast during the day
on Sunday before gradually sinking south and retrograding through
the middle of next week. To our north, high pressure over
southeastern Canada will gradually sink south as an upper ridge
builds to the north and west of the region.
With the low lingering closer to the area during the day on Sunday,
have increased precipitation chances, especially across Long Island.
This will also allow breezy conditions to continue, with northeast
winds gusting 25-30 mph, slightly higher along the coast.
Forecast uncertainty increases during the Monday-Thursday time
period as the low begins to sink south and ultimately retrogrades.
Stayed close to NBM PoPs during this time period as the forecast is
expected to continue to evolve. This results in slight chance to low
end chance PoPs through much of the period as various pieces of
energy associated with the upper low rotate through the region. The
best chances for precipitation during this time will be across Long
Island and southeastern Connecticut, while interior portions of the
Lower Hudson Valley have the best chances of remaining mostly dry.
Regardless of the exact timing and location of any precipitation,
prolonged ENE flow will result in lingering cloud cover, especially
along the coast.
Temperatures will remain well below normal on Sunday, with highs
only in the mid 50s. Temperatures will then gradually moderate,
potentially rising to near normal by Wednesday.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pressure currently over the region weakens as a frontal system
begins to approach from the west overnight into Friday.
VFR conditions expected until this afternoon, around 18Z, for
the city terminals, when conditions lower to MVFR as rain
develops. IFR conditions will then become increasingly likely
late in the afternoon and into the evening. lowering conditions
to the east of the NYC terminals will be a couple of hours
later.
Winds become light and variable across most terminals, to light
southerly. A light SE to E flow then develops toward morning and
continues through this morning. East to northeast winds increase
late morning into this afternoon, especially along the coast.
Northeast winds then increase to around 15kt with gusts 20 to
25kt late this evening along the coast.
...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...
Timing of MVFR conditions, lowering to IFR, today may off by
+/- 1 to 2 hrs. Timing of increasing winds and gusts this
evening is uncertain.
.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...
.Late Friday night-Saturday...IFR with rain. ENE winds gusting
25 to 30kt late Friday night. ENE winds increasing to 25 to 30kt
with gusts 30 to 35kt. Highest winds and gusts will be along the
coast. LLWS wind shear, 45 to 50kt at 2Kft, developing late
Friday night and continuing through Saturday across the NYC
metro terminals and Long Island.
.Sunday...MVFR becoming VFR during the morning north to south.
NE wind 15 to 20kt, gusts around 25kt.
.Monday...VFR. A chance of showers east of the NYC terminals, with
MVFR. NE gusts 20 to 25kt.
.Tuesday...VFR.
Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts,
can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90
&&
.MARINE...
Winds and waves will remain below SCA criteria through Friday
afternoon.
Winds increase Friday night into Saturday as a low level jet
develops over the ocean waters, and the pressure gradient increases
between an approaching low to our west and high pressure to our
north. Winds on the ocean will gust to 25-30 kt Friday night, with
gales becoming increasingly likely Saturday through Sunday at least
on the ocean. After collaboration with the surrounding offices, have
issued a Gale Watch on the ocean waters for Saturday through Sunday,
and with a long enough period of SCA conds preceding it, a SCA has
been issued for Friday night. Winds have been trending stronger, so
will even need to consider the potential of storm force gusts based
on boundary-layer winds seen in forecast soundings. For all other
waters, SCA conds could be possible as early as late Friday night,
which is late 3rd period. Gales could be possible here as well this
weekend, but lower confidence here at this time. Will hold off on
any headlines here and allow subsequent shifts analyze model trends
before issuing headlines, whether it be SCA or Gale Warning.
Winds will only gradually diminish Sunday night, and are expected to
remain at or above SCA levels through Tuesday night on the ocean. In
addition, seas will remain 8-12 ft into Monday night before
gradually diminishing on Tuesday. Winds on the non ocean waters will
remain elevated through much of the period as well.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...
Rain totals from Friday through Saturday night are expected to range
mostly an inch to inches with the higher amounts toward Long Island,
NYC and northeastern NJ. This will however be a long duration event,
and antecedent conditions are relatively dry. Flash flooding is not
expected, but minor urban and poor drainage flooding will be possible
with the best chances for this to occur over Northeast NJ and
adjacent areas. The best chance for rainfall to be moderate to
briefly heavy appears to be Friday night.
Any additional rainfall from Sunday through the middle of next week
will be minimal, with no hydrologic impacts expected.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A prolonged period of onshore winds is expected this weekend with
low pressure to our south and high pressure building in from the
north. An increasing ENE flow, enhancing Ekman transport, will
promote tidal piling and increase the chances of minor coastal
flooding. Current guidance average keeps levels below flooding
thresholds, however it is common, especially with ENE winds, for
guidance to be underdone in some areas 48+ hours out - assuming the
wind forecast doesn't change significantly over the next couple of
days. The high tide cycle during late Saturday night would have the
greatest potential impacts. Minor coastal flooding will be possible
during this tide cycle along all south shore bays of Long
Island/Queens/Brooklyn and potentially parts of NY Harbor as well.
Elsewhere, minor flooding could also occur over parts of Western LI
Sound and Peconic Bay.
Winds weaken somewhat on Sunday and Sunday night and shift more
toward the NE. With Sunday afternoon's high tide cycle being lower
of two cycles, any piling added to astronomical tides probably fall
short of flooding thresholds. The late Sunday night high tide cycle
could be impacted as well, but confidence is lower this far out in
time.
