.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)...

Key Messages:

1. Improvement in afternoon RH values, plus less wind, will yield
slightly lower fire weather concerns today.

Discussion:

Water vapor imagery shows an upper low moving through southern
California early this morning, with an associated jet streak
stretching northeast from the Baja peninsula into northern New
Mexico, and upper ridging further east over the plains. Surface
cyclogenesis was ongoing over the Colorado high plains in advance
of that upper low/jet streak, with a stationary front stretching
southeast across the southern plains and into southern AL/GA this
morning. Strengthening southerly flow across the deep south in
response to that developing surface low out west, will pull the
stationary boundary northward as a warm front today. It appears it
will pull north through middle TN but, like it often does, will
have difficulty pulling north through the TN valley. Believe we'll
see a significant warm up in the southern plateau and Chattanooga
areas, near 10 degrees warmer than yesterday, as the warm front
pushes to around or slightly north of those locales. But for areas
from the I-40 corridor northward, cloud cover and being on the
cool side of the boundary should keep highs within 3-4 degrees of
yesterday's readings.

On the fire weather side of things, some slight improvement will
be seen today. Expect to see dewpoints remain steady or slowly climb
today, which will be enough to stave off RH dropping below 25
percent today. Combine this with lighter winds and there is some
improvement to be seen in fire weather concerns. For these
reasons, have opted to forego any fire danger statements and
certainly any RFW headlines.

Tonight, aforementioned upper ridge will be shifting east of the
CWA as the upper low moves east through New Mexico. Low level flow
begins to strengthen across the CWA as a result, with H85 winds
climbing to 30-40kt well ahead of the approaching system. Will
likely begin to see some advisory level winds beginning to pop up
in the higher terrain of the Smokies and points southward by
shortly after midnight tonight. This is just a foreshadowing of
the impressive mountain wave event that will take place in the
long term period.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday night)...

Key Messages:

1. Increasing pressure gradient results in strong southerly winds
and warming temperatures on Wednesday.

2. Strong downslope winds are expected across the East Tennessee
mountains and adjacent foothills Wednesday through Thursday morning.

3. Increased fire danger is possible Wednesday afternoon due to
strong winds, especially near the East Tennessee Mountains.

4. Rain chances increasing Wednesday night and early Thursday
associated with a cold front. There is a low threat for severe
storms.

Discussion:

Wednesday the warming trend continues with strong low level
southerly flow bringing gusty winds to the region. The southerly or
southeasterly wind direction will be favorable for strong downslope
winds in the higher elevations and foothills of the East Tennessee
Mountains, Wednesday through Thursday morning. A High Wind Watch has
been issued for that timeframe and area. It appears that 60 to 80
mph gusts are possible in the mountains and foothills with strong
850 mb winds around 60 kt Wednesday afternoon and 70 kt Wednesday
evening. Elsewhere, southerly winds will be strong with gusts up to
40 mph possible at times Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday
evening. Strong winds will bring a threat for increased fire danger
especially near the East Tennessee Mountains. The air will not be as
dry as it has been but strong winds can rapidly spread fires that
are already burning. Rain chances will increase Wednesday night as
the system approaches. The upper level trough will stay well to the
west when the cold front approaches Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. The latest GFS run shows a minor wave near Middle TN that
gets washed out as it moves northeast. If that is the case it could
enhance potential for a few strong to severe storms. Instability
will be very low. Dew points will remain below 60 even in the
southernmost counties. A few strong to severe storms will be
possible if they are able to get or stay organized in Middle
Tennessee. Deep layer shear is very high around 60 to 70 kts.
Damaging wind gusts will be the main threat if storms are able to
get organized. With 0-1 km shear 30 to 40 kts, a few weak brief
tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Overall, the severe threat is low but
we will be monitoring storms developing to the west Wednesday
evening. The rain will be moving into the region around and after
midnight.

Some showers will linger on Thursday until the trough moves through
Thursday night. Friday and possibly Saturday will be dry with high
pressure over the Ohio Valley. Temps will be seasonable with highs
in the 60s. There will be another chance for rain Saturday night as
a weak system moves through.

.AVIATION...
06Z TAF DISCUSSION.

VFR conditions will prevail through the 06z TAF period, with high
clouds gradually lowering to somewhere between 5-7k ft AGL. High
pressure flips east of the Appalachians and a warm front moves
into the TN valley from the southwest later today which will
allow light and variable winds early this morning, to become SSW
at KCHA and KTYS by this afternoon. KTRI likely keeps a variable
wind through the period.
