TODAY-TONIGHT...The powerful central CONUS low pressure center is
located in northeast Nebraska with a leading-edge occluded front
entering southwest MN while crossing IA. Its upper level low is
nearly stacked atop it, shifted just to the west of the surface
feature. Plenty of lift associated with this system along with
increased low level moisture advection with a cooling of temperatures
aloft has led to the precipitation efficiently changing over from
rain to snow for central into southeast MN and western WI. Subtle
differences in temperatures have allowed for the p-type change, as
locations mainly 34-or-below have gone to all snow while over 34
remains as rain. Thus, points east of a line from Rice Lake to Eau
Claire WI remain as -RA with the ever-so-slightly warmer temperatures
at the surface and just aloft to melt the precip to rain while the
rest of the WFO MPX coverage area has changed over to snow overnight.
KMPX radar has shown some impressive reflectivity values, upwards of
40-50 dBz overnight, leading to some significant drops in visibility
from time to time, as the snow is high-moisture and has even had
some rather large flakes occasionally per MNDOT webcams and plow
cams, along with seeing the changes at our office. The snowfall is
expected to continue through late morning but as the surface system
lumbers along eastward, moving into western IA by mid- afternoon, the
leading front will push north and effectively create a dry slot.
This will allow the precipitation to wind down to DZ/FZDZ at best
this afternoon and evening. Temperatures will also increase just
enough to change any remaining p-type back to liquid. However, as the
surface low moves across northern IA, the upper low will rotate a
strong shortwave around the southern periphery, allowing
precipitation to resume overnight. Moisture will wrap around from the
E and NE into this system, interacting with warmer air aloft to
produce a mixture of p-types overnight while surface temperatures
fall back into the lower 30s from the daytime mid 30s.
THURSDAY-FRIDAY...The surface low will shift to the southeast and
eastern portions of the WFO MPX coverage area Thursday, essentially
moving northeast across southern MN into western WI. This will allow
for colder air from the north to be brought down while precipitation
resumes across the area. So, after a mixture of p-types (mainly
rain/snow) at the start early morning Thursday, the p-type will be
solely snow from late Thursday morning onward. Temperatures are
expected to remain steady in the lower 30s during the day Thursday,
then slowly drop into the 20s Thursday evening then remaining in the
mid-upper 20s Thursday night through Friday afternoon. This will
ensure the p-type remains as snow during this second phase of this
powerful system. While snowfall in any 6-hour period is not expected
to be heavy, the snowfall is expected to be pretty consistent from
Thursday morning all the way through Friday afternoon. When
considering this next phase will be a 48-60hr long duration of snow,
snowfall totals through that duration may well be in the 6-9" range
for much of the WFO MPX coverage area, especially given that both
QPF amounts and snow/liquid ratios have increased. However, given
that there is still plenty of uncertainty in those high amounts along
with plenty of lead time until winter weather headlines are needed,
we will maintain the winter weather headlines currently in place
(which are expected to expire later today) then collaborate on the
next round of headlines for that upcoming additional snowfall.
Regardless of the headlines, the main point remains that travel
impacts are highly likely Thursday through Friday with the nearly
continuous snowfall expected during that timeframe.
.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

- Snowfall will be on a diminishing trend Friday night through
Saturday with little to no additional accumulation
- Arctic air will continue to filter into the area through the
weekend into next week
The slow moving system we have been dealing with for the past few
days will finally move off to the east on Saturday with any snow
showers coming to an end. As the H5 low moves east the flow aloft
will become northwesterly which will continue to funnel colder air
across the CWA. Highs on Saturday will be in the 20s in our east and
teens in our west with lows Sunday morning near 10 in our east and
near zero in our west. With the continuous CAA high temperatures will
continue to fall with highs by next Tuesday mainly in the single
digits above zero and lows in the single digits below zero. Looking
beyond the period, expect the much below normal temperatures to stick
around for a while, so I will go out a a pretty strong limb and say
we will have snow on the ground for Christmas.
As for precipitation chances, it looks like after any snow showers
end this weekend we should be dry at least until Tuesday. Global
models are struggling to resolve a system for the middle of next
week, but it looks like there will be a chance for some light snow
around the middle of next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning)

IFR ceilings expected throughout this TAF duration, potentially
LIFR-or-lower. Precipitation gradually ending from S to N at
initialization, with the vast amount of the precip shield north of
I-94. Remaining precip this morning is in the form of -SN but may
change back to -RA or -DZ before ending altogether around midday
today. Precipitation will resume overnight tonight through daybreak
Thursday, starting out as a -RA/-SN mix before changing to all -SN by
sunrise. Looking ahead, from Thursday morning to Saturday, nearly
continuous light (with occasional moderate) snow is expected,
producing several inches of accumulating snow while temperatures drop
back to the 20s. Breezy E winds will continue today, reaching speeds
15G25kt through the day today. Speeds are expected to diminish
tonight to tomorrow to around 10kt while backing to NE.
KMSP...Precipitation is winding down for MSP airport as the back edge
of the snow shield has pushed north of MSP. Thus, aside from
potentially a few rain/snow showers drifting nearby, have started
out the TAF dry. Precip returns prior to the Thursday morning push,
starting as -RA then steadily changing over to -SN. The changeover to
-SN may occur faster than advertised, before the 09z-12z window.
Although ceilings start out as MVFR at 010, am expecting ceilings to
drop to IFR levels later today and remain there throughout.
Breezy/gusty winds from 100-110 will back to 040-060 tonight into
tomorrow with speeds dropping to the 5-10kt range.
