KEY MESSAGES:
- A potent winter storm will bring the potential for impactful
freezing rain for southwest MN tonight into Tuesday morning, several
inches of accumulating snow, mixed with some freezing rain, from
west central into central MN Tuesday into Tuesday night, and a mix
of freezing rain and snow to parts of western WI Tuesday night into
Wednesday.
- We look to be in the dry slot on Wednesday which will limit
precipitation chances Wednesday through Wednesday night.
- On Thursday, the precipitation chances ramp back up with a few
inches of snow possible through Saturday.
- A prolonged arctic outbreak is still on track to set in next week.
Deep upper low centered over Nevada on water vapor imagery this
morning is the storm that will impact our region Tuesday through
Saturday. Details on the storm haven't changed much. We do have
precip coming in a tad slower late tonight into Tuesday, we still
see lower PoPs Wednesday/Wednesday night with the dry slot, while
this storms departure over the weekend continues to slow down, with
it now looking like we continue to see light snow through at least
Saturday within the cyclonic flow to the west of the low, though the
majority of the snow we see in this period looks to come Thursday
afternoon through Friday.
Late tonight through Wednesday morning will be phase one of this
system. Precipitation here will be driven by strong isentropic lift
as h85 winds increase to over 50 kts with Integrated WV Transport
(IVT) increasing to upwards of 5 standard deviations above normal.
This will result in band of precipitation with intense precipitation
rates moving from west to east across our area starting late tonight
that will eventually exit our WI area Wednesday afternoon.
The difficulty with this first phase continues to revolve around
figuring out p-types. For much of our area, we'll be sitting on a
razor thin edge for seeing most of the QPF falling in the rain,
freezing rain, or snow bin. For freezing rain, we continue to see a
strong signal for upwards of a half inch of QPF falling as freezing
rain southwest of the MN River through Tuesday morning, but that
does not mean we'll see all of that turn into ice accumulations. Our
concern currently is that raw model output, especially from the
CAMs, is making the fzra threat look a lot worse than it will be in
reality as temperatures between 31 and 33 degrees and higher
precipitation rates means we see most of this run off, with limited
ice accumulations and resultant impacts. North of the MN River in
western MN, then across central MN, we saw models tip more of the
QPF into the snow bin, with p-types there looking to be more of a
rain or snow question, though with this forecast update, we did see
snow totals tick over the 6 inch mark from Long Prairie over to
Mora, though there's still potential they lose more snow than we are
currently forecasting to freezing rain or rain. Heading over to
western WI, precipitation doesn't look to get over there until
Tuesday evening, when some cooling of the lower levels will start to
occur again, meaning more of the QPF starts to get dropped into the
snow and freezing rain bins. We did add Polk, Barron, Rusk, and
Chippewa counties into a Winter Storm Watch, though for the cities
of Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire, our current forecast keeps the
majority of the precip as rain (it's northeast Chippewa county that
has the higher snow/ice accumulations). If you find yourself in a
county not in the watch, that means we currently have the majority
of the precip falling as rain (especially the case for Mankato up to
the Twin Cities and over to Eau Claire), but there may still be
enough snow/freezing rain that winter headlines are not completely
out of the question.
For Wednesday, we move into phase two of the storm, the dry slot for
Wednesday/Wednesday night. We probably won't see precipitation
completely shut down during this period, with some occasional bands
of fgen/convergence likely to result in enough lift to get some
transient precipitation bands to flare up, though with temperatures
warming into the mid/upper 30s (and maybe even low 40s in southeast
MN) this precip would be drizzle/rain and will provide us with a
prolonged break in winter weather conditions before the final phase
kicks in.
The final phase of this system will be in the form of wrap around
precip that will fill back in Thursday and will last through at
least Saturday. At the onset of precip on Thursday, we could see a
bit of rain/snow mix still across eastern MN into western WI, though
this phase of the storm will bring widespread snowfall to the area.
The heaviest precipitation is expected Thursday night through
Friday, but when all is said and done, a long duration 3-6" of snow
is expected for pretty much all of the MPX area.
Next week, arctic air arrives and confidence remains high that we'll
see temperatures way below normal during the run in to Christmas.
One thing to watch though is the ECMWF/Canadian show a shortwave
coming out of the southwest CONUS and riding up the baroclinic zone
early next week, which could give us a nice cosmetic snow before we
enter the deep freeze.

Low stratus to remain in place throughout this TAF period. Western MN
will be a blend of IFR/MVFR ceilings while most of central-southern
MN into western WI remain as MVFR today through tonight. Wintry mix
of precipitation will move into W/SW MN overnight through sunrise
Tuesday then gradually spread eastward through the day. The wintry
mix will likely persist for much of the day in western MN while -RA
is expected to be the prevailing precip type in eastern MN. Ceilings
will remain close to the MVFR/IFR threshold throughout but the
general delineation will be IFR in western MN and MVFR in eastern MN
and western WI. Visibilities will likely drop to IFR in western MN as
well. Southeast winds will be breezy throughout, particularly after
sunrise tomorrow, with speeds nearing 20G30kts.
KMSP...Low stratus to remain in place throughout, with ceilings
dropping through the teens overnight into tomorrow. IFR cannot be
ruled out but the better confidence resides in having MVFR ceilings.
Precipitation is expected to hold off until after 18z, then chances
ramp up appreciably thereafter. The prevailing p-type Tuesday
afternoon will be rain, although for brief periods some -SN and/or
-IP may be mixed in, especially at the start, before -RA takes over
Tuesday afternoon. From sunset onward, a mix of -RA/-SN can be
expected. Breezy/gusty winds with direction around 120 are expected,
with speeds near 15G25kts this afternoon through tonight increasing
to near 20G30kt Tuesday.

Late tonight, a wintry mixture of freezing rain, rain and snow will begin moving into far western and southwest Minnesota. Some ice accumulations will be possible by sunrise Tuesday morning for areas generally along and west of a line from Morris to Redwood Falls to Fairmont. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday. A powerful storm system will impact the region Tuesday through Saturday, with precipitation coming in two phases. Phase one will move across Minnesota on Tuesday into Tuesday night and across western Wisconsin Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. A mix of freezing rain and heavy snow will be possible Tuesday across western and central Minnesota, with heavy snow mixed with freezing rain possible Tuesday night in western Wisconsin. Phase two of this storm will come Thursday through Saturday in the form of a prolonged period of light to moderate snow that will likely lead to a few inches of snow for most of central and southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
