Issued at 818 PM CST Sun Jan 23 2022 No significant changes to ongoing forecast as the primary band of light snow continues to drop southeastward across much of the forecast area. Snowfall rates have been light, generally a half inch per hour or less, with total accumulations still on track for 0.5 to 1.5 inches. The higher end of this range will be across areas near and southeast of the Twin Cities metro. .DISCUSSION...(This evening through Sunday) Issued at 231 PM CST Sun Jan 23 2022 Key Messages: + The last of three small winter systems will bring an inch or two of snow to southern MN into western WI this evening. + Frigid air returns on Monday night, as is typical following a clipper, with no reprieve until late Wednesday night. Wednesday morning is looking to be the coldest. TODAY THROUGH TOMORROW - As clouds continue to creep in from the west, the snow will soon follow. Snow has already begun to fall in western Minnesota, and will likely reach the Twin Cities Metro by 4 or 5PM. Flurries may continue on and off throughout the night, but would not amount to much. Today's snow will be similar to that of the past two nights, with storm total amounts largely in the trace to 1 inch range. Except for far SW Minnesota, any meaningful snowfall should be done by the early overnight hours. Far SW Minnesota, near the Red River Valley, should expect to see a second round of steadier snowfall commence after midnight and be gone by morning commute. The chance for patchy freezing drizzle behind the snow still exists, with the highest probability area being the counties a tier north of the Red River Valley. Despite relatively small accumulations, the main takeaway from this third clipper is that it will impact the morning commute. A large temperature gradient will spread across our area through this evening, with places in far SW MN reaching the lower 20s and areas in west central WI only reaching 5 degrees. Tomorrow's daytime temperatures will be fairly uniform across the CWA, between 0 and 10 degrees. Current southerly winds will become northerly winds by tomorrow morning, which is the precursor to the upcoming drop in temperatures. MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY - Tomorrow night, we enter another bitterly cold spell. Prior to the cold, northerly winds will pick up around noon on tomorrow, then shift to northwesterly by the evening. Places west and south of the Metro could see gusts upwards of 20 to 25 mph during the afternoon and evening hours, leading to patchy blowing snow concerns. After the winds slightly settle at sundown (could still see 15 mph gusts), temperatures will take a nose dive in a NW to SE fashion as Arctic air moves in. By 7AM Tuesday, area wide temperatures range from -10 to -20 degrees, with wind chills approaching -25 in west central WI and -40 in west central MN. The Metro area will likely see -25 to -30 degree wind chills Tuesday morning. Advisory level wind chills are likely Tuesday morning, and we are not expected to warm beyond -15 to -20 during the day. Wednesday morning isn't looking much different, with colder wind chills than Tuesday morning expected. Area wide air temperatures could be 10 to 20 degrees below zero. After factoring in even light wind, this sends wind chills to a frigid -25 to -35 across the entire CWA. Confidence on incoming cold air is high, but confidence on just how cold is still medium to low. As Wednesday approaches, we will know more. Thursday and Friday bring sighs of relief as we should warm to the mid 20s for highs. Areas in western MN could see a 50 degree air temperature change between early Wednesday morning and late Wednesday evening! West central WI could see some flakes on Thursday, but accumulations should remain minimal at best. For the most part, temperatures should moderate to slightly below seasonal temperatures after Friday, with highs in the 20s and lows in the single digits. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night) Issued at 1125 PM CST Sun Jan 23 2022 Back edge of light snow is currently near a RWF-MSP-RNH line where another 30-60 minutes of light snow can be expected before tapering off shortly.
